This book was released on 2007-10-11 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first interdisciplinary book on the mobilization of nutrients and pollutants in the water phase due to hydrodynamic processes. Coverage includes the formation of aggregates in turbulent water; flocks and biofilms from organic reactions; and the formation of new surfaces for re-adsorption of dissolved pollutants. The book gathers papers resulting from an International Symposium on Sediment Dynamics and Pollutant Mobility in River Basins in Hamburg, Germany, March, 2006.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the devastating dust storms that swept across Northern China in 2000, there has been increased interest in studying experiences with dust storm mitigation, prevention, forecasting and control. This book contains a range of essays and case studies written by a group of Chinese and international experts with experience in the field of dryland rehabilitation and ecological restoration of desertified lands at the global and local level. Issues discussed include: the experiences in Canada and the US during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930's; the desertification of areas on the continents of Australia and Africa; case studies from Asia which look at the consequences of the large-scale implementation of policies and land-use practices; and methods for the forecasting, mitigation and prevention of dust storms.

Book Quaternary Deserts and Climatic Change

Download or read book Quaternary Deserts and Climatic Change written by A.S. Alsharhan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings record the results of climate change in many areas which are hyper-arid deserts today but which, almost cyclically, at intervals of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years, have had a much more humid climate.

Book Periglacial Processes and Landforms in Britain and Ireland

Download or read book Periglacial Processes and Landforms in Britain and Ireland written by John Boardman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1987 book examines the intimate link between periglacial geomorphology and the fluctuating climates of the Quaternary Period in the British Isles. In the last two million years, ice sheets have covered northern Britain several times. In the south, at the limit of the glaciation, intense frost action and the formation of permafrost have influenced past and present landscapes. The first part of the book looks at areas of the world that have climates similar to periglacial Britain: Scandinavia, the Canadian Arctic, and alpine regions. Contributors then present data on periglacial landforms in the British Isles. Topics discussed include the periglaciation of upland Britain, ground ice depressions, and pingo remnants. The regions surveyed stretch from northern Scotland to the Isles of Scilly. The contributions are based on a conference held in late 1985 under the sponsorship of the International Geographical Union and the Quaternary Research Association of the United Kingdom.

Book Physics of Desertification

Download or read book Physics of Desertification written by F. El-Baz and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986-04-30 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deserts are parts of the Earth that receive little or no rain; 25 cm or less per year. The physical processes that act upon these parched lands are vastly different from those that shape the more humid parts of the terrestrial landmasses. In the desert, wind is a major agent of erosion and transportation. As the results of recent space missions have indicated, this is also true in the case of the planet Mars. Thus, our understanding of desert processes sheds light on fundamental planetary processes that may apply on any planetary body that is enveloped by a windy atmosphere. An understanding of the physical layout of arid lands, and the nature of processes that initiate changes therein is also fundamental to thoughtful utilization of these lands for the benefit of mankind. It is with this in mind that we prepared this book for publication. We believe that the collection of articles in this book will be useful to scientists who are interested in desert landforms and processes, and to planners of economic develop ment of arid lands. The book also serves as a guide for students as to the state of our knowledge in this field as well as to the topics that require additional research.
