Download or read book Rattling Spears written by Ian McLean and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large, bold, and colorful, indigenous Australian art—sometimes known as Aboriginal art—has made an indelible impression on the contemporary art scene. But it is controversial, dividing the artists, purveyors, and collectors from those who smell a scam. Whether the artists are victims or victors, there is no denying the impact of their work in the media, on art collectors and the art world at large, and on our global imagination. How did Australian art become the most successful indigenous form in the world? How did its artists escape the ethnographic and souvenir markets to become players in an art market to which they had historically been denied access? Beautifully illustrated, this full stunning account not only offers a comprehensive introduction to this rich artistic tradition, but also makes us question everything we have been taught about contemporary art.
Download or read book Materiality written by Petra Lange-Berndt and published by Whitechapel: Documents of Cont. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Materiality has reappeared as a highly contested topic in recent art. Modernist criticism tended to privilege form over matter--considering material as the essentialized basis of medium specificity--and technically based approaches in art history reinforced connoisseurship through the science of artistic materials. But in order to engage critically with the meaning, for example, of hair in David Hammons's installations, milk in the work of Dieter Roth, or latex in the sculptures of Eva Hesse, we need a very different set of methodological tools. This anthology focuses on the moments when materials become willful actors and agents within artistic processes, entangling their audience in a web of connections. It investigates the role of materiality in art that attempts to expand notions of time, space, process, or participation. And it looks at the ways in which materials obstruct, disrupt, or interfere with social norms, emerging as impure formations and messy, unstable substances. It reexamines the notion of "dematerialization"; addresses materialist critiques of artistic production; surveys relationships between matter and bodies, from the hierarchies of gender to the abject and phobic; explores the vitality of substances; and addresses the concepts of intermateriality and transmateriality emerging in the hybrid zones of digital experimentation." -- Publisher's description.

Download or read book The World of Mortimer Menpes written by Julie Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adelaide-born Mortimer Menpes was an important Australian expatriate artist who worked in Britain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is most renowned as a close associate of Whistler from 1880 until 1888, a time when he was influenced by Whistler's Japanese-inspired aestheticism and acknowledged Whistler as his 'master'. However, Menpes's most prolific and successful period as an artist, post-dates his Whistlerian years. From the late 1880s and throughout the 1890s Menpes's paintings and etchings, inspired by his first-hand experience of visiting Japan (and other 'exotic' locations) were enthusiastically received by a London audience eagerly embracing Japonisme. Menpes also achieved acclaim as a portraitist, with leading actors, artists, politicians and society figures flocking to his famous Japanese-inspired house to have their portraits painted or etched. This publication is the first to consider Menpes' whole oeuvre and contribution to British art. It presents new scholarship from leading Menpes' scholars from around the world and illustrates key works from public and private collections in Britain, the United States and Australia together for the first time.
