Book Blue Gray in Black White

Download or read book Blue Gray in Black White written by Brayton Harris and published by Potomac Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue & Gray in Black & White is account of the techniques, tactics, and personalities of the news-gathering industry during the American Civil War. This cataclysmic event accelerated the transformation of the content of newspapers from pallid literature and opinion to robust, partisan reporting of vital events, real and imagined. The written record, however, is only part of the story. Much of the impact of Civil War journalism derives from its illustrations, and twenty-two examples of these are reproduced here. Harris also follows the war's most famous artists, including Winslow Homer, as they and their reporter brethren braved the dangers of the battlefield to capture some of our most memorable images of war.

Book Blue Gray Mist and a Black Dawn

Download or read book Blue Gray Mist and a Black Dawn written by Rod Rogers and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-10-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue-Gray Mist and a Black Dawn is a novel about people caught in a place and a time. Like a huge omnipotent beast, the American Civil War grasped the country by its shoulders and shook it violently, then threw it beaten and bloody into the dust and rocks. In order to understand the people who rose from the cultural debris and physical carnage, then went on to continue the experiment in democracy, it is necessary to understand the time and place. The fictional characters in this book are tightly wound with real characters, the technology, and the social and political culture of 1864 American. Those readers who are familiar with this period will quickly recognize the real characters and events. They are integral and necessary parts of the story whether as participates or persons who directly influence the actions of the characters in the novel. Though there are many accounts of battles and the action of soldiers in battle, this is not a novel about battles. It is a story about time and place and the people who experienced it. It is violent; it is tender; it is everything that human beings are magnified by this period of national insanity.

Book Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White 35012

Download or read book Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White 35012 written by Adam Hamilton and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone agrees that America is polarized, with ever-hardening positions held by people less and less willing to listen to one another. No one agrees on what to do about it. One solution that hasn’t yet been tried, says Adam Hamilton, is for thinking persons of faith to model for the rest of the country a richer, more thoughtful conversation on the political, moral, and religious issues that divide us. Hamilton rejects the easy assumptions and sloppy analysis of black and white thinking, seeking instead the truth that resides on all sides of the issues, and offering a faithful and compassionate way forward. He writes, "I don't expect you to agree with everything I've written. I expect that in the future even I won't agree with everything I've written here. The point is not to get you to agree with me, but to encourage you to think about what you believe. In the end I will be inviting those of you who find this book resonates with what you feel is true, to join the movement to pursue a middle way between the left and the right - to make your voices heard - and to model for our nation and for the church, how we can listen, learn, see truth as multi-sided, and love those with whom we disagree." Book Still Life Painting Atelier

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Friel
  • Publisher : Watson-Guptill
  • Release : 2010-09-28
  • ISBN : 0823034089
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Still Life Painting Atelier written by Michael Friel and published by Watson-Guptill. This book was released on 2010-09-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equivalent of a foundation course in traditional oil painting for beginning to intermediate level artists, this in-depth book uses the still life as a practical way to master oil techniques. The still life is a practical, forgiving genre as it does not require the likeness of a portrait or the accurate proportions of the figure and, unlike the landscape, it doesn’t change with the weather. Instead, it gives aspiring artists ample time to study and the opportunity to look closer. It can be used as a purely formal subject for drawing and painting techniques, or a platform for emotional expression using personal symbolism and imagery. However, though the still life is used throughout as a teaching tool, this is first and foremost a book about oil painting. It begins with simple compositions that build to more complex arrangements. Starting with essential information on how to best set up your studio—including lighting, equipment, materials (paints, solvents, brushes, mediums), and preparing your canvas and paper for oil painting—Still Life Painting Atelier then offers concrete lessons in a logical progressive sequence, with step-by-step illustrations, finished paintings, diagrams and tips. Chapters cover: • How to address composition through thumbnail sketches and line drawings • Using underpainting to study the characteristics of light and shade • The basics of color theory and color mixing • How to use a variety of brushes to create sharp and soft edges • Techniques that are helpful when painting metal and glass • How to apply glazing and scumbling to bring luminosity and texture
