Book Biological Variation in Health and Illness

Download or read book Biological Variation in Health and Illness written by Theresa Overfield and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-04-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specifically for the health professional, this book contains an extensive compilation of research findings on biologic variation by race, age, and gender relating to health and illness. Completely rewritten, revised, and updated, the Second Edition includes an increased discussion of biologic variation and expanded coverage of each chapter topic. This book provides a theoretical framework for understanding the mechanisms that influence biologic variation. It presents a well-documented discussion of research data and indicates areas where knowledge is lacking. A theoretical explanation is followed by examination of surface and anatomical variations, developmental variation, biochemical and enzymatic variations, disease susceptibility differences, and influence of the external variation. Consideration of sexual variation reveals more differences between the sexes than among races. Misconceptions about racial uniformity and diversity are exposed throughout the book. Tables of specific biologic variations allow easy reference and access to the literature.

Download or read book In Her Lifetime written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relative lack of information on determinants of disease, disability, and death at major stages of a woman's lifespan and the excess morbidity and premature mortality that this engenders has important adverse social and economic ramifications, not only for Sub-Saharan Africa, but also for other regions of the world as well. Women bear much of the weight of world production in both traditional and modern industries. In Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, women contribute approximately 60 to 80 percent of agricultural labor. Worldwide, it is estimated that women are the sole supporters in 18 to 30 percent of all families, and that their financial contribution in the remainder of families is substantial and often crucial. This book provides a solid documentary base that can be used to develop an agenda to guide research and health policy formulation on female healthâ€"both for Sub-Saharan Africa and for other regions of the developing world. This book could also help facilitate ongoing, collaboration between African researchers on women's health and their U.S. colleagues. Chapters cover such topics as demographics, nutritional status, obstetric morbidity and mortality, mental health problems, and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Book Endocrine Function and Aging

Download or read book Endocrine Function and Aging written by H. James Armbrecht and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the hallmarks of aging is the decreased capacity to adapt to changes in the environment. In a constant, controlled environment, it is often difficult to distin guish the functioning of the young organism from that of the old. However, when stresses are applied-temperature stresses, dietary stresses, infection, emotional stresses-the differences are more apparent. Frequently, the response ofthe old is delayed and may never reach the same mag'nitude as the young. These responses, in most cases, are mediated by the neuroendocrine system, which communicates via hormones, neurotransmitters, and related substances. Thus, it is important to understand the age-related changes that take place in the secretion and act ion of these substances and how these changes relate to the well-being of the whole organism. Indeed, the "neuroendocrine theory of aging" proposes that almost all of the characteristics of aging can be accounted for by dysfunction of the neuroendocrine system. A book on endocrine function and aging is particularly relevant at this time. With the advent of the techniques of molecular biology, there has bee~ an explo sion of knowledge concerning hormone secretion and action. Hormones, pro hormones, hormone receptors, and "second messenger" mediators rapidly are being cloned and sequenced. Such knowledge gives us important insights into the molecular workings of these substances as well as into the genetic hasis of endo crine dysfunction. These new tools are now being applied to the problem of age related changes in endocrine function.
