Book excerpt: Will it ever be possible to stop war, or is war an intractable problem? Combining the disciplines of history, psychiatry and neurology, the author probes this question in the tradition of C.P. Snow. Archeologists of the future reveal how purity is tied to violence, the existence of shame societies and guilt societies, bloody sacrificial rituals and why many women support war. Horrified by the death toll, the suicide bombers and the use of diabolic weapons of our times, they discuss how our society eventually abandoned war.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Toni Morrison’s Beloved is a spellbinding and dazzlingly innovative portrait of a woman haunted by the past. Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has borne the unthinkable and not gone mad, yet she is still held captive by memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. Meanwhile Sethe’s house has long been troubled by the angry, destructive ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved. Sethe works at beating back the past, but it makes itself heard and felt incessantly in her memory and in the lives of those around her. When a mysterious teenage girl arrives, calling herself Beloved, Sethe’s terrible secret explodes into the present. Combining the visionary power of legend with the unassailable truth of history, Morrison’s unforgettable novel is one of the great and enduring works of American literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2024 Bloomsbury Lent Book invites you on a six-week journey in the company of the 'beloved disciple' as found in the narrative of the Gospel of St John. As the only disciple to have stayed close to Jesus at every stage from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion at Calvary, this eagle-eyed eyewitness intentionally records certain subtle details and signs which, when perceived with the eyes of faith, indicate a deeper and far lasting significance. Michael Marshall explores what these signs are and how, with prayerful reflection, they draw us ever more deeply into the personal, eternal and cosmic significance and awareness of all that Christ accomplished by his death and resurrection – the Paschal Mystery. Ideal for both individual use and for small group study, Lent with the Beloved Disciple takes us into the heart of that Paschal Mystery, by which all things in heaven and earth are ultimately fulfilled in the risen and ascended Christ, who is 'all in all'.

Stephen Grant filed a missing person's report on his beloved wife, Tara. The stay-at-home father of two was beside himself with despair. Why would Tara abandon him and their family? Was she involved with another man? Stephen's frantic, emotional search for Tara made national headlines, and the case was featured on Dateline among other television shows and news outlets. But key elements in Stephen's story still weren't adding up: Why did he wait five days to go to police? What was the nature of his relationship with his children's beautiful, nineteen-year-old babysitter? Why did Stephen have cuts on his hands, and random bruises? Then, the police made a gruesome discovery. Parts of Tara Grant's body started turning up around the woods near the Grant's home. The truth was finally coming to light...and, after a two-day manhunt, Stephen admitted to having killed Tara—first strangling her, then cutting her body into fourteen pieces before burying them. This is the shocking true story about a bitter, cheating husband whose crimes were revealed by the BLOOD IN THE SNOW.

This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has been reading and analyzing who Jesus was and is and forever from holy scriptures, other mystics, channelings, and other worldwide web of information. Ms. Juanita de Guzman Gutierrez studied and graduated with bachelor and masters degrees in education. And she pondered her spiritual awakening. After more than thirty-three years of school, teaching in the Philippiness and in New York Citys public and private schools, she entered the monastery to discern a call to the religious life. She stayed in the cloistered and contemplative monastery for three years and three months. Ms. Gutierrez was admitted as a prepostulant, postulant, and then as a novice of the congregation who prayed five times a day. Ms. Gutierrez was assigned sacred jobs, such as officiant or leader of songs, bell ringer, scripture reader, assistant to the dispenser, cleaner, embroiderer, and preparer of fruits and vegetables. She had to come out and leave the monastery for two reasons: First, her beloved mother was taken sick. Second, it was not Gods holy will that Sister Juanita becomes a nun. This book is a personal, spiritual, and scholastic journey of Ms. Gutierrez through life. She had traveled around the world and experienced different cultures and studied miracles that happened in the planet. What struck her mind is how universal the greatest man who ever lived on earth, Jesus the Christ, is. He is internationally known and loved and celebrated as well as vilified and mocked. This book will bear on these analyses. Take this journey with Ms. Gutierrez. It gave her tears rolling down her cheeks when these words were etched in her mind, The greatest Jewish priest that ever lived, Jesus, was killed for his peaceful doctrine.

Book The Gospel of the Beloved Disciple

Download or read book The Gospel of the Beloved Disciple written by Herman C. Waetjen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a general consensus that the Fourth Gospel underwent two editions. But in contrast to all previous efforts to reconstruct these two editions on the basis of source and redaction criticism, Waetjen maintains that these two editions essentially overlap without far-reaching changes. Chapter 1-20 originated within the Jewish community of Alexandria and were addressed to Jews in order to persuade them to "believe into" Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. The second edition originated when chapter 21 as added and certain revisions were made in chapters 1-20 by an editor in the Christian community of Ephesus in order to present the Gospel to Gentile Christians and perhaps attendantly to legitimate it for canonization. Waetjen examines John's gospel by engaging in a close reading of various units of the Gospel from the perspective of a two-level drama that presents two narrative worlds within the literary structure of the Gospel. Out of his readings of the texts, one of the major and provocative conclusions Waetjen draws is that Lazarus is the Beloved Disciple of Jesus in chapters 1-20. John, the son of Zebedee, is intimated to play the role of the Beloved Disciple not only in chapter 21, but throughout the Gospel. In other words, the editor of chapter 21 has concluded that John (based on the title that the gospel already bears), is the Beloved Disciple and project that backwards from chapter 21 throughout the previous 20 chapters. Waetjen's thorough scholarship and his attention to detail in his original readings challenge traditional readings of John's Gospel, providing fresh insights into the Gospel.
