Book Toward Ritual Transformation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Toward Ritual Transformation renowned liturgist Robert W. Hovda, and other distinguished liturgists who have followed his lead, challenge the Church to continue a pilgrimage toward beauty and justice, the inseparable components of Christian liturgy and life. Father Hovda's bishop once accused him of having a messiah complex." Hovda replied: *I thought we were supposed to. - Hovda's *messiah complex - was the idea of a church *never finalized or finished, never an accomplished fact but always on pilgrimage, seeking, growing, and helping the world grow toward what Scripture calls the reign of God. This faith community comes to realize gradually, with the help of the Word of God and the signs of the times, that its ministry in the world is the liberation and unification of the human race, because the God of the Bible is a God who is living, whose creative work is ongoing, and whose call beckons us always to move beyond where we are at any given moment. - Essays and their contributors are *A Tree Planted by a Stream, - by Gabe Huck; *The Sacred: Silence and Song, - by Robert W. Hovda; *Liturgical Prayer: Twenty-five Years of Change, - by Virgil C.Funk; *Ritual Transformations: Principles, Patterns, and People, - by J. Michael Joncas; *Being Beautiful, Being Just, - by Nathan D. Mitchell; *The Transforming Power of Music: Tales of Transformation, - by James Savage; and *All at Once the Music Changed, - by John Foley, S.J.

Book Music Makers of the Blue Ridge Plateau

Download or read book Music Makers of the Blue Ridge Plateau written by Blue Ridge Music Makers Guild and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late 1920s, Ralph Peer and the Victor Recording Company visited the city of Bristol to look for new talent. They stumbled upon Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, two future legends of country music; however, other amazing musicians were unable to make the trip to Bristol for the auditions because of work and family obligations. For the locals, music was more than a way to earn fame and fortune; the music was part of the fabric of life in this rural environment. Some individuals did become famous, including the Stoneman Family, who recorded "The Ship That Didn't Return/ The Titanic," and Henry Whitter, who recorded "The Wreck of Old 97," but that was never the focus. The songs they played and created accompanied an entire generation through the Great Depression and World War II and into the vigorous growth of the 1950s and 1960s. All of these musicians influenced the birth, growth, and continued development of the Galax Fiddlers Convention, which is known around the world by old-time mountain music fans.

Book excerpt: Jesse, Son of God is a spoof on the story of Job with a twist. This time the Devil tells God, Sure Jesus loved you. He knew he was your Son. But Ill bet you, if you have another Son and you dont tell him of his divinity, then he couldnt find you with a map. So, being a sporting sort, the Lord agrees to the wager. Now its up to Satan to lead Jesse (Gods second son) away from the straight and narrow path, which isnt all that difficult since Jesse is easily distracted by girls, drugs, fishing and life in a Hawaiian paradise. However, just when the Prince of Darkness thinks hes won the bet, Jesse finds some way to express his love for God: a poem, a kind deed, an encounter with sharks. Youll enjoy experiencing life with Jesse, from his early days as a Kindergarten Casanova, to his contemplative Grandpa years when he realizes the more he knows, the more he knows he doesnt know. In between that time, Jesse will nearly burn down his town, escape from Moonie camp, call in a bomb scare to this church, fall in love a lot and prove hes more sinner than saint.
