Book federleicht Life is a Story story one

Download or read book federleicht Life is a Story story one written by Tanja Hemmann and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Together with a motley bunch of former neighbours, they set off to create a new life for themselves in the radioactive no-man's land. Geiger counter and irradiated forest fruits be damned, there in that abandoned patch of Earth they have everything they need. Terminally ill Petrov passes the time reading love poems in his hammock; Marja takes up with 100-year-old Sidorow; Baba Dunja whiles away her days writing letters to her daughter... rural bliss reigns, until one day a stranger turns up in the village, and the small settlement faces annihilation once again. With her trade-mark wry humour Bronsky tells the story of a community that shouldn't exist, and of a very unusual woman who late in life finds her own version of paradise.

Situated between heteronormative and racialized stereotypes of migrant women on the one hand, and the implicitly white figure of the lesbian on the other, queer migrant women are often rendered ›impossible subjects.‹ Claiming Home maps how they negotiate conflicting loyalties in this field and how they, in their own way, claim a sense of belonging and home.

Book Berlin Coquette

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jill Suzanne Smith
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2014-05-15
  • ISBN : 0801469694
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Berlin Coquette written by Jill Suzanne Smith and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late nineteenth century the city of Berlin developed such a reputation for lawlessness and sexual licentiousness that it came to be known as the "Whore of Babylon." Out of this reputation for debauchery grew an unusually rich discourse around prostitution. In Berlin Coquette, Jill Suzanne Smith shows how this discourse transcended the usual clichés about prostitutes and actually explored complex visions of alternative moralities or sexual countercultures including the "New Morality" articulated by feminist radicals, lesbian love, and the "New Woman." Combining extensive archival research with close readings of a broad spectrum of texts and images from the late Wilhelmine and Weimar periods, Smith recovers a surprising array of productive discussions about extramarital sexuality, women’s financial autonomy, and respectability. She highlights in particular the figure of the cocotte (Kokotte), a specific type of prostitute who capitalized on the illusion of respectable or upstanding womanhood and therefore confounded easy categorization. By exploring the semantic connections between the figure of the cocotte and the act of flirtation (of being coquette), Smith’s work presents flirtation as a type of social interaction through which both prostitutes and non-prostitutes in Imperial and Weimar Berlin could express extramarital sexual desire and agency.

Book A Contrastive Grammar of Brazilian Pomeranian

Download or read book A Contrastive Grammar of Brazilian Pomeranian written by Gertjan Postma and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pomeranian is the West Germanic language spoken by European emigrants who went from Farther Pomerania (present-day Poland) to Brazil in the period 1857–1887. This language is no longer spoken in cohesive societies in Europe, but the language has survived and is in remarkably good shape on this language island in the tropical state of Espirito Santo. This monograph offers the first synchronic grammar of this language. After a historical introduction, the book offers a systematic description of its phonology, morphology and syntax. The language is contrasted with its European sisters, more particularly High German, Dutch, and Frisian. It highlights various phenomena that will presumably contribute to the ongoing theoretical debate on the Germanic verbal system. It provides new data on cluster V2, do-support, and the two infinitives. As to the infinitival syntax, the language shows remarkable parallels to the system of Frisian. As to the rich Pomeranian system of subtractive morphology, the phonological account that is offered, will be important for the ongoing discussion of the abstractness of phonological representations. Finally, Pomeranian is a welcome addition to the set of languages on which our etymological understanding of West Germanic is based.
