Book On the Significance of Science and Art

Download or read book On the Significance of Science and Art written by Leo Tolstoy and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some, it is a four-letter word. But for Leo Tolstoy, "work" is one of the main reasons that we are here. The author and philosopher urges us to comply with the "eternal law of humanity" - to "labour with our whole being, feeling no shame at any sort of work". It's one in the eye for the idle rich and those who look down on low-paid jobs. And it is at the heart of a wide-ranging essay on the purpose of art and science. Parts of the book and Tolstoy's conclusions have been superseded by scientific advances, but much of it is almost prophetic. As we embrace working from home, portfolio careers and uncertainty, his thoughts retain their currency. Tolstoy weaves his thoughts on 19th century art and science onto a backdrop of thousands of years of philosophy. Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a Russian author, a master of realistic fiction and one of the world’s greatest novelists. Tolstoy’s major works include 'War and Peace' (1865–69) and 'Anna Karenina' (1875–77), two of the greatest novels of all time and pinnacles of realist fiction. Beyond novels, he wrote many short stories and later in life also essays and plays. In the years following the publication of 'War and Peace' Tolstoy - who was born to a Russian aristocratic family - had a spiritual awakening that made him a committed Christian anarchist and pacifist. His philosophy inspired Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

Book Occult philosophy is the panacea for all ills of mind and body

Download or read book Occult philosophy is the panacea for all ills of mind and body written by Cicero and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisdom is acquaintance with all divine and human affairs, and knowledge of the cause of everything. Virtue is the good of the mind: it follows, therefore, that a happy life depends on virtue. Pain is virtue’s sharpest adversary. Pain and pleasure are trifling and effeminate sentiments peculiar to the lower self. Fortitude is fearless obedience to reason. To her followers, prudence teaches a good life and secures a happy one. The aim of life is neither applause nor profit, but to merely experience it on behalf of the silent observer within. By exercising authority over his lower self, the wise man opposes pain as he would an enemy. Armed with contention, encouragement, and discourse with himself, he remains indifferent to honour and dishonour. “I am not at all surprised at that, for it is the effect of philosophy, which is the medicine of our souls.” Frustration is the end point of all outwardly-looking desires, and every frustration nurtures Vairagya. Preliminary vairagya is a mental U-turn, an infolding of consciousness. Final vairagya is the actualisation that all is One. Veiling the eyes to external vision is the first initiation, the first step on the Renunciant Path. Happiness ever alternating with sadness softens us up, motivates us to conquer our internal enemies, and gives us the confidence to persevere, and a foretaste of true love. “These evils seemed to have arisen from the fact that all happiness or unhappiness was placed in the quality of the object to which we cling with love.” Occult Philosophy is the remedy for every disease of mind, body, and soul.

Book The God idea expressed theistically and philosophically

Download or read book The God idea expressed theistically and philosophically written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absurd idea of an extra-cosmic personal God does not exist anywhere in our Cosmos or beyond — it is a philosophical impossibility. The God of Theosophy is Cosmos itself; our earth is His footstool. Our Deity, as the “God” of Spinoza and of the true Advaitī, neither thinks, nor creates, for it is All-thought and All-creation. Moreover, there is no over-soul or under-soul, but only One Infinite pre-Cosmic Substance and Thought, which remains in the Universe of Ideas. The first differentiation of its reflection in the manifested world is purely spiritual, and the Beings generated in it are not endowed with a consciousness that has any relation to our highest conceptions. Deity is a Unity, in which all other units in their infinite variety merge, and from which they are indistinguishable — except by the prism of Theistic Maya. Can the individual drops of the curling waves of the universal Ocean have independent existence? While the Theist proclaims his God a gigantic universal Being, the Theosophist declares that the One Absolute (or, rather, Absoluteness) is not-Being but an ever-developing cyclic evolution, the Perpetual Motion of Nature visible and invisible — moving and breathing, even during its long Pralayic Sleep. Apprehension of the term Logos, Verbum, or Vāch, the mystic divine voice of every nation and philosophy, by the spiritual intuition of those few who are not wilfully obtuse, will presage the dawn of One Universal Religion. Logos was never human reason with us. Logos is Divine Thought Concealed, i.e., a purely metaphysical concept far above and beyond the repulsive cerebrations of lower minds. Radiation, emanations, and their endless pantheistic differentiations are master-keys to the enquirer’s innermost perceptions, if he adopts the Platonic deductive method of study and reasoning from Universals to Particulars, i.e., from Cosmogenesis to Anthropogenesis.

Book The Emptiness of Lao Tzu is the Absoluteness of the Buddhist No thing yet Every thing

Download or read book The Emptiness of Lao Tzu is the Absoluteness of the Buddhist No thing yet Every thing written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Lao-Tzu and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese mind is too philosophical to fashion a supreme being in its likeness. The higher aspirations of Christ and Buddha, the world’s great reformers, have nothing to do with the cold, practical philosophy of Confucius, who does not have the depth of feeling and the spiritual striving of his contemporary, Lao Tzu. From Lao Tzu down to Hiuen-Tsang, their literature is replete with allusions to the fair island of Shambhala (now an oasis of incomparable beauty) and the Wisdom of the trans-Himalayan Adepts. The Emptiness of Lao Tzu is the Absoluteness of the Buddhist, a state of perfect Uncreated Unconsciousness — a Presence which ever was, is, and will be forever. Lao Tzu mentions only five of the seven principles of man, and omits to include the highest (Atma) and the lowest (which is no principle but the cadaver). Analogy is the guiding law, the reliable Ariadne’s thread that can lead us through the otherwise inextricable paths of Nature. The “seven jewels” of the Japanese Yamaboosis, the mystics of the Lao Tzu sect, and the ascetic monks of Kyoto allude to the correspondence of the seven principles of man with our planetary chain of seven rounds. The Moral Doctrines of Lao Tzu: 1. Tao in Its Transcendental Aspect, and in Its Physical Manifestation. 2. Tao as a Moral Principle, or “Virtue.” 3. The Doctrine of Inaction. 4. Lowliness and Humility. 5. Government. 6. War. 7. Paradoxes. 8. Miscellaneous. 9. Lao Tzu on Himself.

Book Why was Tolstoy s Kreutzer Sonata censored in Russia and England as being obscene

This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prudish England will never allow a diagnosis of the state of its diseased morals and hidden ulcers in its social life to be made. Jesus did not teach Monasticism but the law of Continence. For morality to exist between men and women, they must follow the law of Chastity. “Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth.” Moral continence and chastity are mistaken for monasticism. There is no sanctity in worldly marriage of any kind. Madame Blavatsky examines the meaning of marriage from the highest philosophical, metaphysical, and ethical perspectives. Madame Blavatsky appraises the religious, practical, and political aspects of sensual marriage. Q & A on Theosophy, Asceticism, and Marriage.

Book The struggle for existence

Book excerpt: It is only by extending empathy and sympathy that the individual can expand into the divine and merge with universal love, the spirit of which is self-sacrifice. By extending our love to all men, aye, to animals as well, we joy and sorrow with them, and expand our souls towards The One that ever both sorrows and joys with all, in an eternal bliss in which the pleasure of joy and the pain of sorrow are not.

Book The first step towards the Temple of Truth

Download or read book The first step towards the Temple of Truth written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2017-09-23 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selfishness is the root cause of every vice and sorrow. Self-love is the prime mover of every mortal sin. Vice and wickedness are an abnormal, unnatural manifestation, at this period of human evolution. But truth is often stranger than fiction. Some fictions point out to some of the most hidden ulcers in social life. For morality to exist between men and women, they must follow the Law of Chastity. Jesus did not teach Monasticism but the law of Continence. Of all vices, Vanity is the last and the most troublesome. Yet, in no class of society at large are deceit and craft considered as Divine Virtues, except in the clerical classes of theologians. In the unreal world we live in, every virtue (even a papal one) is tainted with vice. The first step towards the Temple of Truth is a clean life. Forgiveness of injuries, contentment, and pity are not exclusively Christian virtues. Still, the noble love of virtue for virtue’s own sake, of which some ancient Pagan nations were such prominent exemplars, has never blossomed in the Christian heart. Salvation by personal merit and self-forgetfulness is the greatest of all virtues and cornerstone of the teachings of Lord Buddha. For virtue cannot be spoofed or hoodwinked. One has to love her for her own sake without looking for reward or profit. The eminent ideal of virtue is the only basis of spiritual insight and attainment. One ought to despise that virtue which prudence and fear alone direct. The seven cardinal virtues are superhuman divine faculties. True virtues are faculties of the sevenfold Logoic Hierarchy. All else is burlesque and ballyhoo. They are the female counterparts of the Celestial Hierarchy. Virtues are one degree of the Hierarchy of Compassion, whose mission is to maintain righteousness on earth. They are the Four Maharajas, Kings of the Dhyani-Chohans, who preside over and rule the four Cosmical Forces. They are they who, being in this world, yet live far beyond our illusive life on earth.

Book Paradox is the language of Occultism

Download or read book Paradox is the language of Occultism written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2017-09-30 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paradoxes of occultism must be lived, not uttered only. Only in the profound unconsciousness of self-forgetfulness can the truth and reality of being reveal itself to his eager heart. Reflections upon the seemingly contradictory world we live in. There is no room in the world for one who is not prepared to become a full-blown hypocrite. Many newspaper editors show a decided leaning towards the mysteries of the archaic past. No pagan, even of the lower classes, believed that the soul would return into its old body. But cultured Christians do. Who can have the patience to read 1,500 pages of dreary metaphysical twaddle for the sake of discovering in it a few facts, however valuable? Wealth leads to impunity, poverty to condemnation even by the law, for the impecunious have no means of paying lawyers. What is good for the Masonic goose is not fit sauce for the Theosophical gander.

Book On Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : Leo Tolstoy
  • Publisher : Northwestern University Press
  • Release : 2018-11-15
  • ISBN : 0810138050
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book On Life written by Leo Tolstoy and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1886, shortly before his fifty-eighth birthday, Leo Tolstoy was seriously injured while working in the fields of his estate. Bedridden for over two months, Tolstoy began writing a meditation on death and dying that soon developed into a philosophical treatise on life, death, love, and the overcoming of pessimism. Although begun as an account of how one man encounters and laments his death and makes this death his own, the final work, On Life, describes the optimal life in which we can all be happy despite our mortality. After its completion, On Life was suppressed by the tsars, attacked by the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church, and then censored by the Stalinist regime. This critical edition is the first accurate translation of this unsung classic of Russian thought into English, based on a study of manuscript pages of Tolstoy's drafts, and the first scholarly edition of this work in any language. It includes a detailed introduction and annotations, as well as historical material, such as early drafts, documents related to the presentation of an early version at the Moscow Psychological Society, and responses to the work by philosophers, religious leaders, journalists, and ordinary readers of Tolstoy's day.

Book The ennobling power of thoracic expansion

Download or read book The ennobling power of thoracic expansion written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mountain air, being placed nearer to the Fountain of Life, fortifies health and prolongs life. Retreat in solitude and unbroken stillness, where air free of all pestilential exhalations and deep study are prerequisites for higher knowledge. Acrimony, antagonism, antipathy, enmity, and resentment are vexatious to the spirit. Singing promotes health and the development of the chest. And the expansion of the chest allows the noblest parts of our nature to unfold. By forcing chest expansion and lung exhalation, high altitudes foster spiritual temperament. Full breathing is a therapeutic agent, restorative and curative. By compelling chest expansion, the exercise of the thighs is far more efficient than any exercise of the arms. Keep smiling, for smile is the expression of the superior regions of the brain.

Book Truth descends like dew from heaven into the pure heart

Download or read book Truth descends like dew from heaven into the pure heart written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Éliphas Lévi and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rational part of man, being divine, knows. The irrational part, so-called reason, speculates. Swedenborg was natural-born seer, not an initiated adept. But his interpretation of the first chapter of Genesis is the same as that of the Hermetic philosophers. Eugenius Philalethes had never attained “the highest pyrotechny,” but he defined the “philosopher’s stone” spiritually, as Triune Unity. Man is also a “stone,” physically, the effect of Divine Cause which is the Universal Solvent. The great sages of antiquity, those of the mediæval ages, and the mystical writers of our more recent times, were all Hermetists. Truth is known but to the few; the rest, unwilling to withdraw the veil from their own hearts, imagine it blinding the eyes of their neighbour. Instead of saying that God “made” man after His own image, we ought in truth to say that man anthropomorphises God, i.e., he imagines “God” after his own image. The subject of the Hermetic art is man, and the object of the art is the perfection of man. Sympathy is the offspring of light, and antipathy is a shadow from the abyss of darkness, says the Paracelsian physician. Elementals are the spirits of the four elements of the terrestrial world. Forms come and pass but the ideas that created them and the material which gave them objective existence remain. Privation is not considered in Aristotelean philosophy as a principle in the composition of bodies, but as an external property in their production; for production is a change by which the matter passes from the shape it has not, to that which it assumes.
