Book Blasting Supplies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Blasting Supplies Classic Reprint written by E. I. Du Pont de Nemours Company and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blasting Supplies Although the explosive itself very naturally demands first consideration when blasting is to be done, the fact must not be overlooked that it cannot be properly exploded without certain materials and appliances especially designed for the purpose, and which are commonly known as "Blasting Supplies." In addition to those articles necessary to develop the energy of a charge of explosives, there are other devices which, although they may not be absolutely requisite, contribute to safety, certainty and economy in the use of explosives, and these are also included in the category of Blasting Supplies. The importance of keeping Blasting Supplies up to the highest standard in every respect cannot be overestimated, for the very best grade costs but a trifle in comparison with the charge of explosives with which they are used. It is poor economy to attempt to detonate explosives with an inferior article, for this always results in a considerable waste of the value of the explosives. More than a hundred years' experience in the manufacture, sale and use of all kinds of explosives has taught us that the popularity of our products depends entirely on the results which consumers have with them. With this in view, we must, from a standpoint of "good business," if from no other, recommend only a high quality of Blasting Supplies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Explosive Compounds: Machine Rock Drills and Blasting There is at the present time 110 full work in English on the subjects here treated, though many valuable Monographs and Papers, especially on Explosive Compounds, and on the phenomena attendant on Explosion and Detonation, have appeared within the last decade in Pamphlet form, and in the papers read before the Engineering Societies in England and in America. It is the hope of the author that this work may be found in some measure to supply the want of a general Treatise upon questions heretofore studied and discussed only in detached and separate form. If but a beginning in this direction has been made, such beginning may at least serve as an Index for the future study and elaboration of others. Book Rock Blasting

Download or read book Rock Blasting written by Geo G. André and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rock Blasting: A Practical Treatise on the Means Employed in Blasting Rocks for Industrial Purposes During the past decade, numerous and great changes have taken place in the system followed and the methods adopted for blasting rocks in industrial operations. The introduction of the machine drill led naturally to these important changes. The system which was suitable to the operations carried on by hand was inefficient under the requirements of machine labour, and the methods which had been adopted as the most appropriate in the former case were found to be more or less unsuitable in the latter. Moreover, the conditions involved in machine boring are such as render necessary stronger explosive agents than the common gunpowder hitherto in use, and a more expeditious and effective means of firing them than that afforded by the ordinary fuse. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. Book The Shot Firer s Guide

Download or read book The Shot Firer s Guide written by Wm Maurice and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shot-Firer's Guide: A Practical Manual on Blasting and the Prevention of Blasting Accidents In the Shot-Firer's Guide an attempt is made to place at the service of explosives users in mines and quarries simple, practical explanations concerning the most approved types and methods of handling blasting apparatus and the precautions that are necessary in order to secure safety. Every stage of a blasting operation is described in detail; instances are given of the varieties of accident which most frequently occur; and the very important question of shot-firing in fiery and dusty mines is considered in the light of the most recent inquiries. It is hoped that by thus seeking to familiarise mine officials, shot-lighters and others with the risks involved in underground shot-firing, and with the skilful use of modern methods of ignition, something will be done to lessen the annual toll of lives which Nature exacts as the price of failure to comprehend her laws. In Great Britain alone 106 mine explosions have been caused by shot-firing during the past 10 years. In the same period more than 3,000 persons have been injured and over 500 killed by accidents arising out of the use of explosives. On the average, one person is injured every day and one dies as the result of his injuries each week throughout the year. Few of these casualties partake of the nature of unforeseeable occurrences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tnt as a Blasting Explosive The investigations reported herein were undertaken and this paper has been prepared Solely to aid In the Salvage of the surplus tnt accumulated for war uses and released by the declaration of the armistice. No funds were available nor have any been appropriated with which to defray the expense of converting this tnt into any other form or to prepare any explosive mixture from it. The sole problem was to find appropriate uses for the tnt in existing needs and to show that it could be efficiently Used without Change in carry ing out essential civil projects. It is not intended to promote the use of tnt as an industrial explo sive. On the contrary, the authors believe that tnt is unlikely to be generally used, principally because of its cost. The clouds of smoke given off 'by tnt on explosion Show that we are not obtaining from it its highest efficiency. It can be improved by mixing the tnt in proper proportions with sodium nitrate or ammonium nitrate or some other cheap oxidizing agent which will consume the excess combustible matter in the tnt. By such admixture not only Will the energy resident in the tnt be utilized to a larger extent, but the cost of the resulting explosive should be much less than that of tnt. It may be desirable to add other material with which to waterproof this product. But these are problems which should be treated else where. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book The Principles Operation and Products of the Blast Furnace Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles Operation and Products of the Blast Furnace Classic Reprint written by J. E. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles Operation and Products of the Blast Furnace The rational subdivisions for a work on the blast furnace are: Construction, Principles, Operation and Product. Construction was treated in my recent book "Blast Furnace Construction in America." This volume treats of the last three subdivisions of the subject. The treatment of a subject from several different points of view involves a certain amount of repetition exactly as the mechanical engineer in making a drawing of a machine must show it on three planes of projection and must show some of the same parts in each view. The same conditions hold in presenting a complicated subject like the blast furnace. Any adequate treatment must show it from several points of view and a certain amount of repetition is not only inevitable but is desirable to drive home important considerations. The section on "Principles" might be called the theory of the blast furnace, but the word "theory" carries, to many minds, the unpleasant implication that it is something the opposite of practice, while it has been my greatest effort to develop a set of principles which should so thoroughly agree with practice that one would merge into the other, and that only an arbitrary dividing line could be drawn between them. The section on "Operation" may be criticized as inadequate to the vastness and importance of the subject, but the limitations of space must not be ignored. I have put into the chapters on operating difficulties a number of personal experiences which arc to some extent representative. Many other furnacemen have had experiences which I should like better to describe, but it is virtually impossible to obtain adequate descriptions of such experiences without living through them. It may be that some of my contentions in the section on "Products" will not be universally admitted for years to come, especially in regard to the effect of oxygen in cast iron, but the amount of proof available is so great that it has forced the acceptance of my conclusions by some of the highest authorities, and I confidently expect that others will follow. A chapter on "Commercial Considerations" is added at the close of the book, which I hope will be found to contain valuable information of a kind not usually given in technical books. I wish to acknowledge the help I have received in the form of facts and ideas from nearly all the furnacemen I have met. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Submarine Blasting in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts: Removal of Tower and Corwin Rocks Of these, numerous varieties were tried, in the search for one that combined all the requisites of impermeability to water, lightness, incompressibility, and cheapness. Lightness or buoyancy of material was required in order that the fragments of the cartridges, after an ineffective blast, might float out of the hole, and not remain in to choke it, and prevent the introduction of a new charge. Incompressibility was requisite to prevent the powder from becoming caked from the pressure of the heavy column of water, in which state the ignition from the fuses or exploders was slow and incomplete. Cheapness was a desideratum, but not a controlling one. The ah solute requisite was that the cartridges should be water-tight. Book Rock Excavation

Download or read book Rock Excavation written by Halbert P. Gillette and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rock Excavation: Methods and Cost The value of the mineral products of America annually exceeds $1,000,000,000. For explosives alone the sum of $20,000,000 is expended each year, and it is well within limits to say that fully twice as great a sum is paid out to drillers and blasters. When we consider the labor, the power and the powder required to mine and to quarry products in the aggregate so enormously valuable, we can not fail to be impressed with the scantiness of literature on the economics of rock excavation. A dozen years ago, when called upon to estimate the cost of some open cut rock excavation, I was astonished to find no text book that in the least served to guide me. I subsequently learned also that most of the matter to be found in the few books on blasting was either theoretic or too meagre to be of material value. What was true then has unfortunately remained true. In the preparation of this volume, it was my original intention to give only condensed cost data on rock excavation - including in that term, quarrying, open cut work, trenching, tunneling, and underground excavation; but, as the writing progressed, it become more and more apparent that methods of doing work and "tricks of the trade" should occupy an important part of the book to make it at all satisfactory. I saw that my object should be not merely to furnish data whereby an inexperienced man might predict the cost of rock work with at least tolerable accuracy, but that it should be my aim also to indicate to the experienced manager how and where savings in the cost of production may be effected. Taking my own notes and records of cost as a basis, I have added so extensively to them by correspondence that the reader will find not a little on costs that has never appeared in print before.
