Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to describe the theory of Hankel operators, one of the most important classes of operators on spaces of analytic func tions. Hankel operators can be defined as operators having infinite Hankel matrices (i. e. , matrices with entries depending only on the sum of the co ordinates) with respect to some orthonormal basis. Finite matrices with this property were introduced by Hankel, who found interesting algebraic properties of their determinants. One of the first results on infinite Han kel matrices was obtained by Kronecker, who characterized Hankel matri ces of finite rank as those whose entries are Taylor coefficients of rational functions. Since then Hankel operators (or matrices) have found numerous applications in classical problems of analysis, such as moment problems, orthogonal polynomials, etc. Hankel operators admit various useful realizations, such as operators on spaces of analytic functions, integral operators on function spaces on (0,00), operators on sequence spaces. In 1957 Nehari described the bounded Hankel operators on the sequence space £2. This description turned out to be very important and started the contemporary period of the study of Hankel operators. We begin the book with introductory Chapter 1, which defines Hankel operators and presents their basic properties. We consider different realiza tions of Hankel operators and important connections of Hankel operators with the spaces BMa and V MO, Sz. -Nagy-Foais functional model, re producing kernels of the Hardy class H2, moment problems, and Carleson imbedding operators.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the CRM Workshop on Invariant Subspaces of the Shift Operator, held August 26-30, 2013, at the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques, Université de Montréal, Montréal, Quebec, Canada. The main theme of this volume is the invariant subspaces of the shift operator (or its adjoint) on certain function spaces, in particular, the Hardy space, Dirichlet space, and de Branges-Rovnyak spaces. These spaces, and the action of the shift operator on them, have turned out to be a precious tool in various questions in analysis such as function theory (Bieberbach conjecture, rigid functions, Schwarz-Pick inequalities), operator theory (invariant subspace problem, composition operator), and systems and control theory. Of particular interest is the Dirichlet space, which is one of the classical Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions on the unit disk. From many points of view, the Dirichlet space is an interesting and challenging example of a function space. Though much is known about it, several important open problems remain, most notably the characterization of its zero sets and of its shift-invariant subspaces. As specified in the invitation of the President Professor Robert P. Gilbert of the ISAAC, we organized the session on Reproducing Kerneis and Their Applications. In our session, we presented 24 engaging talks on topics of current interest to the research community. As suggested and organized by Professor Gilbert, we hereby publish its Proceedings. Rather than restricting the papers to Congress participants, we asked the Ieading mathematicians in the field of the theory of reproducing kern eIs to submit papers. However, due to time restrietions and a compulsion to limit the Proceedings a reasonable size, we were unable to obtain a comprehensive treatment of the theory of reproducing kernels. Nevertheless, we hope this Proceedings of the First International Conference on reproducing kerneis will become a significant reference volume. Indeed, we believe that the theory of reproducing kernels will stand out as a fundamental and beautiful contribution in mathematical sciences with a broad array of applications to other areas of mathematics and science. We would like to thank Professor Robert Gilbert for his substantial contri bu tions to the Congress and to our Proceedings.
