Book Old Scotstoun Whiteinch

Download or read book Old Scotstoun Whiteinch written by Sandra Malcolm and published by . This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two densely populated areas of Glasgow have seen some major changes over the past 100 years: the building of the Clyde Tunnel led to the demolition of numerous tenements in Whiteinch, whilst virtually all of the heavy industry ranged along the Clyde in this part of the city has now vanished. Included among this selection of pictures are such unlikely subjects as Balshagray Farm and a group of thatched cottages at the corner of Anniesland Road and Lincoln Avenue, both now long-gone. There are also views of Barclay Curle's and Yarrow's shipyards. Pictures of vehicles made by Albion Motors (once located in Scotstoun), as well as numerous views of the trams that served these districts, plus a picture of an early bus and two railway photographs provide coverage of local transport. Elsewhere the changing face of Victoria Park is contrasted with the streets of solid tenements and sandstone villas that still make up much of modern Scotstoun and Whiteinch.

Book Riding With Giants

Download or read book Riding With Giants written by Peter Holmes a Court and published by Penguin Group Australia. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International businessman Peter Holmes à Court left the executive world and found himself living deep in rural France with only his seven-year-old twin girls for company. Peter was struggling as a single father in a foreign country - unsettled by the sudden move away from a traditional job, and completely baffled by the society around him. His only plan: to ride L'Etape du Tour, the challenging amateur leg of the Tour de France. In an effort to find some new friends in the community - and a bike for the race - he discovered the region's small bicycle factory. He was soon spending his days there: photographing his custom bike being built, meeting the locals, and learning about the rich traditions of artisan craftsmanship. Trying to enjoy the simple things and become a better father, Peter slowed down, and started to reflect seriously on history, industry and the structure of our modern economy. He and his daughters finally began to put down roots and understand the beauty and calm of a small-scale existence – and a very different approach to excellence and the well-lived life. This is one man's compelling, informative and funny story about the wisdom of children, the nature of work today, and the science of bicycles.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 132 pages

Book excerpt: Edwin Morgan was appointed Poet Laureate of Glasgow in 1999, and many of these poems reflect the life of the city both now and in the past. But equally the poetry moves to other places and other worlds. A sequence of poems about a demon allows the mind to expatiate on a wide range of subjects, social, psychological, philosophical. Some of the poems have been set to music, both jazz and classical. In many ways it is a book of voices and observation, a book of accessible storytelling.
