Book excerpt: The Morning Show's star meteorologist, Jenna Withers, reports on the blistering conditions of a nationwide drought every day. But nothing this alluring young woman has ever experienced can prepare her for the terrifying intersection of extreme weather and extreme politics. After Jenna receives a controversial appointment to a special White House task force on geoengineering, she learns about a lot more than the President's desire to use technology to address global warming. Through old contacts, Jenna hears that Muslim extremists in the Maldives have begun to publicly blame the West for the rising seas that imperil the tiny Pacific island nation. They are planning a suicide bombing that could lead to a sudden and disastrous cooling of the planet. Rick Birk, an aging, alcoholic colleague of Jenna's, is dispatched to report on the turmoil in the Maldives. To his—and everyone else's—shock, he becomes a central – and bizarre – figure in the unfolding panic. News of the Islamist threat sets off an even more horrifying plan in North Korea. The Supreme Leader, desperate for aid, threatens to hold the world hostage with his own, disaster-creating brand of geoengineering, one that takes aim at the skies. Those escalating international tensions are set against the grisly murder of an intriguing Pagan woman in rural New York, Jenna Withers's budding romance with an organic dairy farmer, and a fiercely contested presidential campaign. This swiftly paced tale takes Jenna from the Oval Office to the sandy shores of the Indian Ocean, from the sophisticated set of The Morning Show to her new boyfriend's dusty dairy farm. Filled with fascinating and unusual characters, and told from multiple and deeply moving points of view, Blackmail Earth culminates in a furious battle raging in the heart of Manhattan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When discussing unsolved murders of women in late Victorian London, most people think of the depredations of Jack the Ripper, the Whitechapel Murderer. But he was just one of a string of phantom murderers whose unsolved slayings outraged late Victorian Britain. The mysterious Great Coram Street, Burton Crescent and Euston Square murders were talked about with bated breath, and the northern part of Bloomsbury got the unflattering nickname of the ‘murder neighbourhood’ thanks to its profusion of unsolved mysteries. Marvel at the convoluted Kingswood Mystery, littered with fake names and mistaken identities; be puzzled by the blackmail and secret marriage in the Cannon Street Murder; and shudder at the vicious yet silent killing in St Giles that took place in a crowded house in the dead of night. Rivals of the Ripper is the first to resurrect these unsolved Victorian murder mysteries, and to highlight the ghoulish handiwork of the Rivals of the Ripper: the spectral killers of gas-lit London.

Book Ethics and Business

Download or read book Ethics and Business written by Bart Wernaart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-26 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics in business is not a new topic and has been intensely discussed since the emergence of the so-called limited companies. However, privatization, technological and digital innovation, changes in moral perception, economic and financial crises and globalization stir a more recent debate on how companies should behave in our societies. This book starts from the position that ethics in business should imply an open debate on norms and values, using a sound methodology to get there. Ethics should cross borders: not only the borders of a country, but also the borders of someone’s moral imagination. Ethics should not only be about harmony but also about conflict (and how to deal with that). Ethics should be realistic and well substantiated by academic research. Ethics should be used to understand the complexity of the world, and the challenges companies struggle with on various levels. Therefore, this book is composed of three parts in which ethics is discussed at different levels. In part one we discuss ethics at the level of the individual. In part two we discuss ethics and business. In the third part, ethics is discussed in the context of a globalized world. In each chapter, we discuss the ethical complications of each topic from various – and preferably opposing – perspectives. Each perspective is methodologically and academically substantiated. Each chapter ends with an extensive literature list in which the original sources are listed for further reading. Furthermore, at the end of each chapter, a summary is written in which the most important definitions and viewpoints are highlighted. The frequent use of colorful and bold examples make this an accessible read for bachelor and master students at business schools and professionals in international business.

Book Black Gold and Blackmail

Download or read book Black Gold and Blackmail written by Rosemary A. Kelanic and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Gold and Blackmail seeks to explain why great powers adopt such different strategies to protect their oil access from politically motivated disruptions. In extreme cases, such as Imperial Japan in 1941, great powers fought wars to grab oil territory in anticipation of a potential embargo by the Allies; in other instances, such as Germany in the early Nazi period, states chose relatively subdued measures like oil alliances or domestic policies to conserve oil. What accounts for this variation? Fundamentally, it is puzzling that great powers fear oil coercion at all because the global market makes oil sanctions very difficult to enforce. Rosemary A. Kelanic argues that two variables determine what strategy a great power will adopt: the petroleum deficit, which measures how much oil the state produces domestically compared to what it needs for its strategic objectives; and disruptibility, which estimates the susceptibility of a state's oil imports to military interdiction—that is, blockade. Because global markets undercut the effectiveness of oil sanctions, blockade is in practice the only true threat to great power oil access. That, combined with the devastating consequences of oil deprivation to a state's military power, explains why states fear oil coercion deeply despite the adaptive functions of the market. Together, these two variables predict a state's coercive vulnerability, which determines how willing the state will be to accept the costs and risks attendant on various potential strategies. Only those great powers with large deficits and highly disruptible imports will adopt the most extreme strategy: direct control of oil through territorial conquest.
