Book Blackfeet Tales from Apikuni s World

Download or read book Blackfeet Tales from Apikuni s World written by James Willard Schultz and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-08-16 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, James Willard Schultz wrote a series of tales centering on the adventures of a Blackfoot Indian boy and his Anglo friend in the days just prior to the end of the buffalo era on the western plains. All the tales appeared between 1910 and 1927 in the pages of the popular family weekly The Youth’s Companion. The stories featured the sort of spirited adventure popular at the time, but Schultz was more conscientious than other writers of the day in his depiction of American Indian life. Schultz first encountered the Blackfeet in Montana Territory in 1877, when he was seventeen, and he lived among them for the next seventy years until his death. These tales are based on his experiences with the Blackfeet, who gave him the name Apikuni. Apikuni plays a role in many of the stories, usually under the name Spotted Robe. Although he was neither a historian nor an ethnologist, Schultz filled his stories with history, and with detailed descriptions of the Blackfoot daily life and culture. David C. Andrews has gathered these tales, the last of Schultz’s to be published in book form, and arranged in the order in which they were written.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blackfeet were the strongest military power on the northwestern plains in the historic buffalo days. For half a century up to 1805, they were almost constantly at war with the Shoshonis and came very close to exterminating that tribe. They aggressively asserted themselves against the Flatheads and the Kutenais, shoving them westward across the Rockies. They got on fairly well with English and Canadian traders during the heyday of the fur trade on the Saskatchewan River, but on the upper Missouri they took an early dislike to Americans, whom they called "Big Knives." American fur traders, such as Manuel Lisa, Pierre Menard, and Andrew Henry, were literally chased out of Montana by the Blackfeet.

Book excerpt: Bad luck is the least of their worries… Annabel has never wanted a cat. She certainly didn’t want a secretive, sarcastic black cat who takes over her pillow and makes remarks that no one else ever seems to hear. Despite that, Blackfoot manages to slink into her life like a small, furry shadow. Now Annabel and her friend Peter are being over-run by cats. More and more arrive each day, turning up at the old castle ruins where Annabel and Peter spend most of their time. And some of those cats aren’t as…friendly…as Blackfoot. When someone tries to kill Annabel and a spell goes very badly wrong, they find themselves trapped in the castle ruins, which are now growing back at an alarming rate. Even more alarming is the fact that the person who tried to kill Annabel is rapidly gaining control over the magical ruins. Worst of all, Blackfoot knows more than he’s telling, and what he’s not telling could be enough to get them all killed.
