A few decades ago, three young grads from England's greatest universities - Oxford, Cambridge, and Hull (actually, Manchester) - came up with a historical comedy series. Few thought it would live long in the memory. Today, Blackadder is a timeless comic masterpiece, and its stars have gone on to glittering careers. The True History of the Black Adder is the first ever history of one of Britain's greatest and most unique sitcoms, from its medieval beginnings to its legendary tragic finale. Informed by exclusive - and hilarious - interviews with essential figures like Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Ben Elton, Stephen Fry, Brian Blessed and many more, this the definitive account of how a British institution came to be, as well as a fascinating look into how this classic comedy was almost very different - and a compendium of brilliantly funny anecdotes from a team of Britain's most celebrated comedians. British history is a patchwork of questionable stories, constantly rewritten, re-evaluated and ridiculed; final editorial control has always belonged to the winners. And nobody likes winners... At last, Blackadder enthusiasts can now uncover THE cunning plan, in all its hideous hilarity.

A fictional recounting of the little-known true story of the first woman to ever set foot on Antarctica, and her extraordinary fight to get there. It's the early 1930s. Antarctic open-sea whaling is booming and a territorial race for the mysterious continent between Norwegian and British-Australian interests is in full swing. Aboard a ship setting sail from Cape town carrying the Norwegian whaling magnate Lars Christensen are three women: Lillemor Rachlew, who tricked her way on to the ship and will stop at nothing to be the first woman to land on Antarctica; Mathilde Wegger, a grieving widow who's been forced to join the trip by her calculating parents-in-law; and Lars's wife, Ingrid Christensen, who has longed to travel to Antarctica since she was a girl and has made a daunting bargain with Lars to convince him to take her. Loyalties shift and melt and conflicts increase as they pass through the Southern Ocean and reach the whaling grounds. None of the women is prepared for the reality of meeting the whaling fleet and experiencing firsthand the brutality of the icy world. As they head for the continent itself, the race is on for the first woman to land on Antarctica. None of them expect the outcome and none of them know how they will be changed by their arrival. Based on the little-known true story of the first woman to ever set foot on Antarctica, Jesse Blackadder has captured the drama, danger and magnetic pull of exploring uncharted places in our world and our minds.

Book Translating Humour

Download or read book Translating Humour written by Jeroen Vandaele and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is all too often assumed that humour is the very effect of a text. But humour is not a perlocutionary effect in its own right, nor is laughter. The humour of a text may be as general a characteristic as a serious text's seriousness. Like serious texts, humorous texts have many different purposes and effects. They can be subdivided into specific subgenres, with their own perlocutionary effects, their own types of laughter (or even other reactions). Translation scholars need to be able to distinguish between various kinds of humour (or humorous effect) when comparing source and target texts, especially since the notion of "effect" pops up so frequently in the evaluation of humorous texts and their translations. In this special issue of The Translator, an attempt is made to delineate types of humorous effect, through careful linguistic and cultural analyses of specific examples and/or the introduction of new analytical tools. For a translator, who is both a receiver of the source text and sender of the target text, such analyses and tools may prove useful in grasping and pinning down the perlocutionary effect of a source text and devising strategies for producing comparable effects in the target text. For a translation scholar, who is a receiver of both source and target texts, the contributions in this issue will hopefully provide an analytical framework for the comparison of source and target perlocutionary effects.

Book Scottish Clans and Their Associated Families

Download or read book Scottish Clans and Their Associated Families written by Robert J. Heston and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get accurate information about Scottish clans, family associations, and societies in this updated edition of Scottish Clans and Their Associated Families. Robert J. Heston expands on his groundbreaking work to focus on the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs’ (SCSC) list of 353 clans. In addition, the author has retained the details of thirty-three Scottish families who are active in the United States and not cited in the SCSC list. When using this book, it is important to note that most Scottish clan and family organizations have clauses in their family lists stating that “variations in spelling of these names are accepted.” Therefore, this book provides the researcher the ability to look beyond an exact spelling of a name. Other books on this subject focus on a small number of clans, ancient names, and the preferred spellings of these small number of families. Some associate an individual name to a tartan, which can be problematic. With more than 12,000 names with the sources where these names were found, this work is the best source focused on identifying family surnames associated with Scottish clans, houses, and families.
