Book excerpt: We don’t belong together. I should have never seen him again after our first night together. But I crave him. I’m addicted to him. He is my dark pleasure. Mr. Black is Aiden. Aiden is Mr. Black. Two sides of the same person. Aiden is kind and sweet. Mr. Black is demanding and rule-oriented. When he invites me back to his yacht, I can’t say no. Another auction. Another bid. I’m supposed to be his. But then everything goes wrong…. Praise for Charlotte Byrd “This series thrilled me from the first page and had me completely engrossed. The pacing and plot was excellent. It had the perfect amount of twists and turns, luring me into the fantasy of this amazing book. The story was well-crafted, starting off with characters I fell in love with. I instantaneously bonded with the heroine and of course Mr. Black. YUM. It's sexy, it's sassy, it's steamy. It's everything. I loved every second of it and was so thrilled to have had such a treat.” - Khardine Gray, bestselling romance author "Her words make me ache and yearn for more." - Dancer in the Dark "The story is dark and enticing, taking me deeper into a world from which I never want to emerge." - Lover of Alpha "Addictive and damaged, their love burns slowly but deeply." - Heroes and Alphas “Their chemistry sizzles right from the beginning. He's the gorgeous and dangerous stranger we all need in our life." - Making Words Up "Her words made me fall in love. It slayed me!" - Sizzling Books "Left my head spinning! I never wanted it to end!" - Heartbreakers and Heroes

Download or read book Them Goon Rules written by Marquis Bey and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marquis Bey’s debut collection, Them Goon Rules, is an un-rulebook, a long-form essayistic sermon that meditates on how Blackness and nonnormative gender impact and remix everything we claim to know. A series of essays that reads like a critical memoir, this work queries the function and implications of politicized Blackness, Black feminism, and queerness. Bey binds together his personal experiences with social justice work at the New York–based Audre Lorde Project, growing up in Philly, and rigorous explorations of the iconoclasm of theorists of Black studies and Black feminism. Bey’s voice recalibrates itself playfully on a dime, creating a collection that tarries in both academic and nonacademic realms. Fashioning fugitive Blackness and feminism around a line from Lil’ Wayne’s “A Millie,” Them Goon Rules is a work of “auto-theory” that insists on radical modes of thought and being as a refrain and a hook that is unapologetic, rigorously thoughtful, and uncompromising.

This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hesketh Prichard, a popular Edwardian-era English travel writer, sailed to Haiti in 1899 to survey the conditions on the island, the first-ever Black-ruled republic. At the time, it was believed no white man had ventured in that mysterious and closed-off part of the world since 1803, after General Jean-Jacques Dessalines ordered the massacre of all the whites in what was then known as San Domingue. Prichard had opportunity to venture deep into Haiti's interior, unknown at the time, and was first to witness the practice of vaudoux (voodoo). He also narrowly escaped with his life, after an attempt was made to poison him. Prichard's observations, narrated in an exquisitely understated tone, cover every aspect of Haitian society in 1899, ranging from the grotesque to the tragi-comical—indeed, the reader will experience just about every emotion in the human spectrum as he devours this immensely entertaining book. More importantly, Prichard's account explains why Haiti, once one of the most prosperous colonies in the New World, is so profoundly dysfunctional today. It also implicitly explains why the current 'development' paradigm is so profoundly flawed. This annotated 2012 edition comes complete with all the original photographs, an expanded index, and a 50-page introductory essay.

Book excerpt: The triumphant story of how an all-Black Broadway cast and crew changed musical theatre—and the world—forever. "This musical introduced Black excellence to the Great White Way. Broadway was forever changed and we, who stand on the shoulders of our brilliant ancestors, are charged with the very often elusive task of carrying that torch into our present."—Billy Porter, Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award-winning actor If Hamilton, Rent, or West Side Story captured your heart, you'll love this in-depth look into the rise of the 1921 Broadway hit, Shuffle Along, the first all-Black musical to succeed on Broadway. No one was sure if America was ready for a show featuring nuanced, thoughtful portrayals of Black characters—and the potential fallout was terrifying. But from the first jazzy, syncopated beats of composers Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, New York audiences fell head over heels. Footnotes is the story of how Sissle and Blake, along with comedians Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles, overcame poverty, racism, and violence to harness the energy of the Harlem Renaissance and produce a runaway Broadway hit that launched the careers of many of the twentieth century's most beloved Black performers. Born in the shadow of slavery and establishing their careers at a time of increasing demands for racial justice and representation for people of color, they broke down innumerable barriers between Black and white communities at a crucial point in our history. Author and pop culture expert Caseen Gaines leads readers through the glitz and glamour of New York City during the Roaring Twenties to reveal the revolutionary impact one show had on generations of Americans, and how its legacy continues to resonate today. Praise for Footnotes: "A major contribution to culture."—Brian Jay Jones, New York Times bestselling author of Jim Henson: The Biography "With meticulous research and smooth storytelling, Caseen Gaines significantly deepens our understanding of one of the key cultural events that launched the Harlem Renaissance."—A Lelia Bundles, New York Times bestselling author of On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C.J. Walker "Absorbing..."—The Wall Street Journal

Book excerpt: Ian Fleming. John le Carré. Len Deighton. Mick Herron. The brilliant plotting of Herron’s twice CWA Dagger Award-winning Slough House series of spy novels is matched only by his storytelling gift and an ear for viciously funny political satire. “Mick Herron is the John le Carré of our generation.”—Val McDermid At MI5 headquarters Regent’s Park, First Desk Claude Whelan is learning the ropes the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered prime minister, he’s facing attack from all directions: from the showboating MP who orchestrated the Brexit vote, and now has his sights set on Number Ten; from the showboat’s wife, a tabloid columnist, who’s crucifying Whelan in print; from the PM’s favorite Muslim, who’s about to be elected mayor of the West Midlands, despite the dark secret he’s hiding; and especially from his own deputy, Lady Di Taverner, who’s alert for Claude’s every stumble. Meanwhile, the country’s being rocked by an apparently random string of terror attacks. Over at Slough House, the MI5 satellite office for outcast and demoted spies, the agents are struggling with personal problems: repressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis, and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. Plus someone is trying to kill Roddy Ho. But collectively, they’re about to rediscover their greatest strength—that of making a bad situation much, much worse. It’s a good thing Jackson Lamb knows the rules. Because those things aren’t going to break themselves.
