Book excerpt: When Pawns Rebel is a journey that a pawn takes through the demanding environment of the board while a game is in process. The pawn changes his mind and his sense of right and wrong with every convincing argument that he hears. After making up his mind on what his life should be about and events and his status do not satisfy his newly found goals, does he cave in and let life take its usual course or will he attempt to alter his destiny and the destiny of all the other pawns on the board? Will the other pawns agree with him on what's best for them or will they oppose him? And what will the major pieces do once they find out about him and his conspiracy to strip them away of their superiority over the pawns? How will all that happened effect the game and will it have an effect on other boards? Making connections between the pawn and one self on an occasion or another should not be difficult.

  • ISBN : 1135957762
  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book Castration written by Gary Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Castration is a history of the meaning, function, and act of castration from its place in the words of Jesus in the Gospel According to Matthew and the early Church - where Augustine and the Fathers shaped the basic philosophic concepts of sexuality and chastity - to its secular reinvention in the Renaissance and its twentieth-century position at the core of psychoanalysis." "Taylor connects castration to the ancient (and continuing) human drive to re-engineer our own biology. In the medieval love story of Abelard and Heloise a violent castration makes Abelard a better theologian. In the year 2000 a sterile but otherwise functioning man is a boon to the woman who desires sex without the burdens of pregnancy." "Ranging from allegory to zooarchaeology, Castration turns an unusual and discomforting topic into a thoroughly enjoyable narrative on man's obsessive relationship to his genitals, his sexuality, and his manhood."--Jacket

Book Gaming the Stage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gina Bloom
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press
  • Release : 2018-07-10
  • ISBN : 0472123912
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Gaming the Stage written by Gina Bloom and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich connections between gaming and theater stretch back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when England's first commercial theaters appeared right next door to gaming houses and blood-sport arenas. In the first book-length exploration of gaming in the early modern period, Gina Bloom shows that theaters succeeded in London's new entertainment marketplace largely because watching a play and playing a game were similar experiences. Audiences did not just see a play; they were encouraged to play the play, and knowledge of gaming helped them become better theatergoers. Examining dramas written for these theaters alongside evidence of analog games popular then and today, Bloom argues for games as theatrical media and theater as an interactive gaming technology. Gaming the Stage also introduces a new archive for game studies: scenes of onstage gaming, which appear at climactic moments in dramatic literature. Bloom reveals plays to be systems of information for theater spectators: games of withholding, divulging, speculating, and wagering on knowledge. Her book breaks new ground through examinations of plays such as The Tempest, Arden of Faversham, A Woman Killed with Kindness, and A Game at Chess; the histories of familiar games such as cards, backgammon, and chess; less familiar ones, like Game of the Goose; and even a mixed-reality theater videogame.

Book Thomas Middleton The Collected Works

Download or read book Thomas Middleton The Collected Works written by and published by OUP. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 2016 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Middleton (1580-1627) - 'our other Shakespeare' - is the only other Renaissance playwright who created lasting masterpieces of both comedy and tragedy; he also wrote the greatest box-office hit of early modern London (the unique history play A Game at Chess). His range extends beyond these traditional genres to tragicomedies, masques, pageants, pamphlets, epigrams, and Biblical and political commentaries, written alone or in collaboration with Shakespeare, Webster, Dekker, Ford, Heywood, Rowley, and others. Compared by critics to Aristophanes and Ibsen, Racine and Joe Orton, he has influenced writers as diverse as Aphra Behn and T. S. Eliot. Though repeatedly censored in his own time, he has since come to be particularly admired for his representations of the intertwined pursuits of sex, money, power, and God. The Oxford Middleton, prepared by more than sixty scholars from a dozen countries, follows the precedent of The Oxford Shakespeare in being published in two volumes, an innovative but accessible Collected Works and a comprehensive scholarly Companion. Though closely connected, each volume can be used independently of the other. The Collected Works brings together for the first time in a single volume all the works currently attributed to Middleton. It is the first edition of Middleton's works since 1886. The texts are printed in modern spelling and punctuation, with critical introductions and foot-of-the-page commentaries; they are arranged in chronological order, with a special section of Juvenilia. The volume is introduced by essays on Middleton's life and reputation, on early modern London, and on the varied theatres of the English Renaissance. Extensively illustrated, it incorporates much new information on Middleton's life, canon, texts, and contexts. A self-consciously 'federal edition', The Collected Works applies contemporary theories about the nature of literature and the history of the book to editorial practice.

Book Industry And Labor Dynamics The Agent based Computational Economics Approach Proceedings Of The Wild ace 2003 Workshop

Download or read book Industry And Labor Dynamics The Agent based Computational Economics Approach Proceedings Of The Wild ace 2003 Workshop written by Matteo Richiardi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-11-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the contributions to the first Wild@Ace conference. The acronym stands for “Workshop on Industrial and Labor Dynamics — The Agent-Based Computational Aproach”, and it has been the first event ever focusing on the very promising use of the agent-based simulation approach for investigation of labor economics and industrial organization issues.Agent-based models are computer models in which a multitude of agents — each embodied in a specific software code — interact. These agents can represent individuals households, firms, institutions, etc. Moreover, “special” agents can be added to observe and monitor individual and collective behavior. One of the main purpose of writing an ACE model is to gain intuitions on the two-way feedback between the microstructure and the macrostructure of a phenomenon of interest. How is it that simple aggregate regularities may arise from individual disorder? Or that a nice structure at an individual level may lead to a complete absence of regularity in the aggregate? How is it that the complex interaction of very simple individuals may lead to surprisingly complicated aggregate dynamics? Or that sophisticated agents may be unable to organize themselves in any interesting way?The book includes contributions by some of the most distinguished researchers in the field, such as the economists Alan Kirman, Giovanni Dosi, Leigh Tesfatsion and Mauro Gallegati, and the sociologist Nigel Gilbert.
