Book excerpt: Driven by hate, Azelus and his evil servant-creatures will stop at nothing to wipe out the strong but peaceful Natori people from their magical land of Vale. Just as all hope seems lost for the Natoris, a mysterious stranger appears on the scene claiming he has been sent from afar to vanquish Azelus and crush his dark reign of terror. But has the stranger arrived in time? Or is it too late for him to save the Natoris from the clutches of their merciless foe? Light Rising is the first of three novels from author Elizabeth Pettersen about Vale, a world of beauty and mystery, and the winged Natori tribe living there. Elizabeth writes in a voice and style that's relevant to the current youth generation to deliver an entertaining tale aimed squarely at young fantasy-adventure enthusiasts. This Christian allegory illustrates the dramatic struggle between good and evil, and will draw young-adult readers to the truth about God's love and His redemption of humanity through Jesus Christ.

Book Atlantis Rising

Download or read book Atlantis Rising written by Patricia Cori and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second book in the Sirian Revelations Trilogy explores the wisdom ancient Atlantis can offer contemporary seekers. The lost continent of Atlantis has existed in the collective consciousness of humankind for eons—contemplated as early as 355 BC by Plato and echoing in the modern mind. In this controversial book, author Patricia Cori provides compelling, often startling insights into this lost culture and the lessons it holds for us as both a high civilization and a metaphor for our current world situation, earth changes, growing extraterrestrial phenomena, and government conspiracy theories. Only by embracing and recognizing what Atlantis can teach us, says Cori, can we expect to heal and uplift our own increasingly threatened civilization.

Book excerpt: This charmingly spooky novel is set in Pelican River, southwest of Perth, in the 1920s. With all the charm and coziness of a BBC TV period drama, the story plays out in the aftermath of the First World War. It is centered around the eccentric and newly widowed Ruth, her butler Rutherford, and her aunt Julia, together with Ruth's inventor neighbor Gordon and his raft of hounds, and the elusive and sinister demon, Mr Nor. Humor abounds and the characters explore the new ideas in science and physics of the era, as well as the development of science fiction itself, with cameos by the likes of Mr. H. G. Wells. This supernatural crime mystery also bears the traces of the effect of war on a nation and its people.

Book excerpt: A powerful novel about the expectations of family--and the risks and liberation of defying them--by the Washington Post bestselling author of One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow. 1975. In the town of Rexburg, Idaho, aspiring artist Aran Rigby, his younger sister, Tamsin, and their two brothers are locked in orbit around their emotionally abusive father. Gad is the kind of man who soothes the failures of his own life by controlling the lives of others. But Aran and Tamsin are united in rebellion against their father. They understand each other. They have dreams beyond their small town. Arriving in Rexburg is Linda Duff, an outsider from Seattle hoping to plant new roots far from the bitter ones of her childhood. She's quickly taken with Aran, in no small part because of his talent. But when they fall in love, Linda is drawn into a family more damaged than the one she left behind. She also becomes privy to a secret Aran and Tamsin share that could dismantle everything everyone holds dear. Upsetting the precarious balance in the Rigby home, Linda becomes an unwitting catalyst for the upheaval of Gad's oppression. Now it's time for them all to break free of the past, overcome the unforgivable, and find a new way forward--whatever the price.

Book Irish Theatre in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Irish Theatre in the Twenty First Century written by Nicholas Grene and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish Theatre in the Twenty-First Century is the first in-depth study of the subject. It analyses the ways in which theatre in Ireland has developed since the 1990s when emerging playwrights Martin McDonagh, Conor McPherson, and Enda Walsh turned against the tradition of lyrical eloquence with a harsh and broken dramatic language. Companies such as Blue Raincoat, the Corn Exchange, and Pan Pan pioneered an avant-garde dramaturgy that no longer privileged the playwright. This led to new styles of production of classic Irish works, including the plays of Synge, mounted in their entirety by Druid. The changed environment led to a re-imagining of past Irish history in the work of Rough Magic and ANU, plays by Owen McCafferty, Stacey Gregg, and David Ireland, dramatizing the legacy of the Troubles, and adaptations of Greek tragedy by Marina Carr and others reflecting the conditions of modern Ireland. From 2015, the movement #WakingTheFeminists led to a sharpened awareness of gender. While male playwrights showed a toxic masculinity on the stage, a generation of female dramatists including Carr, Gregg, and Nancy Harris gave voice to the experiences of women long suppressed in conservative Ireland. For three separate periods, 2006, 2016, 2020-2, the author served as one of the judges for the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards, attending all new productions across the island of Ireland. This allowed him to provide the detailed overview of the 'state of play' of Irish theatre in each of those times which punctuate the book as one of its most innovative features. Drawing also on interviews with Ireland's leading theatre makers, Grene provides readers with a close-up understanding of Irish theatre in a period when Ireland became for the first time a fully modernized, secular, and multi-ethnic society.
