Together they spy an owl overhead, look deep into the frozen face of the lake, and contemplate the fish sleeping below the surface. Then it's time to say goodbye: for Bear to go home and hibernate with the family and for Wolf to run with the pack. Daniel Salmieri's debut as author/illustrator is a beautifully rendered story of friendship and the subtle rhythm of life when we are open to the world and to each other.

Book A Black Forest Walden

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Farrell Krell
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2022-05-01
  • ISBN : 1438488505
  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book A Black Forest Walden written by David Farrell Krell and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-05-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Black Forest Walden is a work of philosophical reflection, nature description, and sly humor. In brief chapters, or aphorisms, the American philosopher David Farrell Krell recounts his experiences in a cabin located in the mountains of southern Germany's Black Forest, where he has lived for several decades. Insofar as Krell compares his experiences with those of Henry David Thoreau, who serves as both inspiration and irritation, the book could be described as a critical commentary on Thoreau's Walden. Yet it equally reads as a rigorous yet playful and profoundly literary manifestation of where and how the mind wanders. Hence, the "Marlonbrando" of the subtitle is not the late actor but a feral cat who frequents the cabin and comes to be an important interlocutor, as if playing the role of analyst to the author. The subjects Krell treats are wide-ranging: the changing seasons, environmental issues, romantic love, parent-child relations, European versus American "values," higher education, artistic creativity, solitude, and the contrast between lifestyles in a quiet Black Forest village and in a noisy contemporary United States. Forty-one black-and-white photographs taken by the author accompany and enliven the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who's Afraid of the BIG Bad Wolves? Two weeks have passed since we’ve last seen our heroes as they received the news of hundreds of feral demon sightings. But, the summoning circles have opened a lot more than just Coven drama in the world of Raen. With the annual blizzard having just ended, the people still aren’t clear of danger. The Coven is in chaos, and Vanessa and Bobo are widely known throughout for their previous achievements. With the city in turmoil, the High Priest Council has ordered a mandatory curfew for the beings of Tolvade as Hunter scouts and Spellweavers roam the streets binding any feral underworld creatures they can find. Meanwhile, Vanessa, Bobo, Leon, and Lyx all try to resume their old life. Something that may be impossible with their newly assigned missions. One is just a simple routine checkup at the local sanctuary to gather information on a massive black magic spell, the other twists them down a dark road that somehow ends up giving them a lead on a potential de-summoning spell. There’s only one catch: It’ll take them into the heart of the infamous Black Forest. Full of giant wolves, dangerous magic, and chock-full of secrets, the Black Forest is not a place for the faint of heart… actually, it’s not for anyone with a heart. If you are alive (in any sense of the word) the Black Forest was the last place you’d venture to if you wanted to keep it that way. If this suicide mission wasn’t difficult enough, each of our beloved characters is faced with inner battles that could shatter their bonds with one another. Will the dynamic duo and their feisty friends manage to survive the darkness within and come back to Coven HQ with a spell that hasn’t been used in almost 200 years, or will they be lost within the forest forever?

Book Black Swamp Wolf

  • Author : Lloyd Harnishfeger
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing

Download or read book Black Swamp Wolf written by Lloyd Harnishfeger and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-08 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There really was a Great Black Swamp, although nearly all vestiges of it have long since disappeared. Thousands of years ago, the last great glacier, grinding its way southward, finally stopped and began to recede. Earth and gravel pushed before it resulting in uneven ridges called kames. Generally lying in an east/west direction, they interrupted the natural drainage of the area. The swamp was the result. Comprised of an elongated triangle, the swamp was roughly bounded on the south by a line from Sandusky, Ohio, to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and the north by the Ohio-Michigan border. It was an area of forests, reeds, pools, and sandy ridges, which provided excellent habitat for a variety of creatures. There were deer, bear, elk, bobcat, lynx, wolves, as well as even a few forest buffalo. Smaller animals, such as rabbits, beaver, snakes, coyotes, and foxes, populated the area in great numbers. Birds of every type abounded, as did biting flies and mosquitoes. Perhaps the most spectacular dwellers of the Great Black Swamp were the gigantic and dangerous cousins of the elephant, the mastodon. That they were really living in that swampy environment cannot be contested as more than four hundred of their massive skeletons have been unearthed throughout Ohio. In a few cases, Paleo Indian artifacts have been discovered in association with the remains, proving that toward the end of the last ice age, early man successfully hunted them. During the westward movement following the revolution, the area was almost impassable. So bad were travel conditions at that time that a border war over a proposed boundary line between Michigan and Ohio never came about, partly because it was impossible for the Ohio militia to move its ordnance northward through the swamp! In the early eighteen hundreds, after some of the most grueling labor imaginable, much of the Great Black Swamp was effectively drained, resulting in some of the most productive agricultural acreage in the Midwest.
