Download or read book Black Burlesque Series written by Tiffany Patterson and published by TMP Publishing LLC. This book was released on with total page 964 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three billionaires. Three smoking hot burlesque dancers. Three steamy chances to fall in love. Black Pearl He’s a powerful billionaire who wants only one thing—my heart After leaving my abusive ex-boyfriend, I’ve lived a double life working as an executive assistant during the day and a burlesque performer at night. All that changes when the sexy CEO of my company walks into the club during my show. Nikola offers me a tempting proposal—he wants to mix business with pleasure. I can’t deny the heat between us that’s hotter than any of my dance moves, but I’m scared to give up my freedom for another man. Especially a man like Nikola, who is determined to always be in control. I need to decide if I’m ready to risk my heart again. But when my past catches up with me, will I be strong enough to fight for the happiness I’ve always longed for? Black Dahlia Love wasn’t for me until I needed his protection… I swore that I would never fall in love. Not after I watched my publicly devout father privately cheat on my mother for decades. My aim in life was to enjoy it, working as an assistant principal by day and performing as a burlesque dancer at night. Not even when the sexy and charming Raul Santiago walks into my life am I tempted to unlock my heart. But I am willing to spend the night with him. Unfortunately, that plan goes awry when Raul proves to be a liar. However, when trouble arises, and someone makes me the center of their obsession, Raul ends up being the one person I can rely on for protection. And with days spent in Raul’s home, him teaching me about his Brazilian heritage and nights with him watching over me at each of my performances, the wall around my heart starts to crumble. Yet will Raul’s protection be enough? Because the person after me is determined to go right through him to get to me. Black Butterfly I didn’t have time for love until I met her… I wasn’t looking for love. My life was complete as it was. I had my pick of women, a career I loved, working alongside my brother running our successful financial company, and my freedom. But with my mother breathing down my neck ever since my brother took the plunge, I’ve been doing my best to avoid commitment. Especially when I know all of the pain that can come with it. And then I met Stacey… She intrigues me like no woman ever has. Can meeting one person change all of my previous thoughts on marriage, love, and commitment?

Book Burlesque and the New Bump n grind

Download or read book Burlesque and the New Bump n grind written by Michelle Baldwin and published by Speck Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though burlesque has survived in the back of our cultural consciousness after being pushed aside by modern stripping in the '50s, the revival that began in the early '90s has finally brought burlesque back to the forefront of popular culture. Evolving from an underground movement to a nearly mainstream fetish, neo-burlesque embraces a wide variety of modern interpretations all based on the classic bump and grind and "taking it off" with a wink and a smile. From classic tributes to punk rock revisionists, women of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds are rediscovering burlesque and reinventing it. A sense of heightened imagination, empowerment and energy are being delivered to the stage, perhaps even more so than during the historic heyday, the Golden Age of Burlesque. Slipping behind the scene, Burlesque and the New Bump-n-Grind undresses the issues of feminism, modern popularity, and what exactly draws the unique and varied audience members to the shows. The women--and men!--of burlesque also receive their fleshed-out dues by a categorized peek into the various troupe styles including classical, re-creationists, revivalists, modern, circus, performance art, political, queer, bawdy singers and comics. Peppered throughout the book are full-color and black-and-white photographs that fully instill the picturesque dance into the reader's mind. Founder of one of the first neo-burlesque troupes, author Michelle Baldwin (a.k.a, Vivienne Va-Voom) has helped to bring the lost art of burlesque back to the forefront of pop culture. Baldwin has served as the creative director, choreographer, music director, costumer, financial head, and performer for her troupe, "Burlesque As It Was." Her deep immersion into this art form has provided her with a rare view into the growth and evolution of the revival.

Book Neo Burlesque

Download or read book Neo Burlesque written by Lynn Sally and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-27 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neo-burlesque movement seeks to restore a sense of glamour, theatricality, and humor to striptease. Neo-burlesque performers strut their stuff in front of audiences that appreciate their playful brand of pro-sex, often gender-bending, feminism. Performance studies scholar and acclaimed burlesque artist Lynn Sally offers an inside look at the history, culture, and philosophy of New York’s neo-burlesque scene. Revealing how twenty-first century neo-burlesque is in constant dialogue with the classic burlesque of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, she considers how today’s performers use camp to comment on preconceived notions of femininity. She also explores how the striptease performer directs the audience’s gaze, putting on layers of meaning while taking off layers of clothing. Through detailed profiles of iconic neo-burlesque performers such as Dita Von Teese, Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Muz, and World Famous *BOB*, this book makes the case for understanding neo-burlesque as a new sexual revolution. Yet it also examines the broader community of “Pro-Am” performers who use neo-burlesque as a liberating vehicle for self-expression. Raising important questions about what feminism looks like, Neo-Burlesque celebrates a revolutionary performing art and participatory culture whose acts have political reverberations, both onstage and off.

Book It s All That Glitters

Book excerpt: "What is burlesque? Who better to ask than burlesque performers themselves? With this question in mind, the author traveled over 14,000 miles across the United States visiting today's burlesque performers, photographing them in their homes, and asking them: "What does burlesque mean to you?" Their answers and 104 accompanying portraits may surprise you. For these performers, burlesque is so many things, including fun and empowerment onstage, an escape from life's doldrums, a fantasy, a career. This book also presents a study in contrasts between the public persona of each performer and that performer's private life."--book jacket.

Download or read book Babylon Girls written by Jayna Brown and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-19 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Babylon Girls is a groundbreaking cultural history of the African American women who performed in variety shows—chorus lines, burlesque revues, cabaret acts, and the like—between 1890 and 1945. Through a consideration of the gestures, costuming, vocal techniques, and stagecraft developed by African American singers and dancers, Jayna Brown explains how these women shaped the movement and style of an emerging urban popular culture. In an era of U.S. and British imperialism, these women challenged and played with constructions of race, gender, and the body as they moved across stages and geographic space. They pioneered dance movements including the cakewalk, the shimmy, and the Charleston—black dances by which the “New Woman” defined herself. These early-twentieth-century performers brought these dances with them as they toured across the United States and around the world, becoming cosmopolitan subjects more widely traveled than many of their audiences. Investigating both well-known performers such as Ada Overton Walker and Josephine Baker and lesser-known artists such as Belle Davis and Valaida Snow, Brown weaves the histories of specific singers and dancers together with incisive theoretical insights. She describes the strange phenomenon of blackface performances by women, both black and white, and she considers how black expressive artists navigated racial segregation. Fronting the “picaninny choruses” of African American child performers who toured Britain and the Continent in the early 1900s, and singing and dancing in The Creole Show (1890), Darktown Follies (1913), and Shuffle Along (1921), black women variety-show performers of the early twentieth century paved the way for later generations of African American performers. Brown shows not only how these artists influenced transnational ideas of the modern woman but also how their artistry was an essential element in the development of jazz.

Download or read book Horrible Prettiness written by Robert Allen and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Allen's compelling book examines burlesque not only as popular entertainment but also as a complex and transforming cultural phenomenon. When Lydia Thompson and her controversial female troupe of "British Blondes" brought modern burlesque to the United States in 1868, the result was electric. Their impertinent humor, streetwise manner, and provocative parodies of masculinity brought them enormous popular success--and the condemnation of critics, cultural commentators, and even women's rights campaigners. Burlesque was a cultural threat, Allen argues, because it inverted the "normal" world of middle-class social relations and transgressed norms of "proper" feminine behavior and appearance. Initially playing to respectable middle-class audiences, burlesque was quickly relegated to the shadow-world of working-class male leisure. In this process the burlesque performer "lost" her voice, as burlesque increasingly revolved around the display of her body. Locating burlesque within the context of both the social transformation of American theater and its patterns of gender representation, Allen concludes that burlesque represents a fascinating example of the potential transgressiveness of popular entertainment forms, as well as the strategies by which they have been contained and their threats defused.

Book Pretty Things

Download or read book Pretty Things written by Liz Goldwyn and published by It Books. This book was released on 2010-12-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liz Goldwyn's lifelong fascination with the inimitable glamour of classic burlesque inspired her to spend the past eight years corresponding with, visiting, interviewing, receiving striptease lessons from, and forming close relationships with the last generation of the great American burlesque queeens. Goldwyn invites us to step back into an era when the hourglass figure was in vogue and striptease was a true art form. Meet Betty "Ball of Fire" Rowland, who was known for her flaming red hair and bump–and–grind routines. (It turns out she once sued the author's grandfather, Samuel Goldwyn Jr., for using her stage name and costume in his Hollywood picture, Ball of Fire.) Meet Sherry Britton, who, with her long black hair and curvy, trim physique, was among the most stunning of the burlesque stars before Mayor LaGuardia outlawed burlesque in New York. Meet Zorita, whose sexually explicit "Consummation of the Wedding of the Snake" dance (performed with a live snake) and other daring performances earned her legendary status. Goldwyn draws back the curtain to reveal the personal journeys of yesteryear's icons of female sexuality and power, restoring their legacy to an age that has all but forgotten them–despite today's resurgence of burlesque.
