Book Black Beauty The Autobiography of a Horse World Classics Unabridged

Download or read book Black Beauty The Autobiography of a Horse World Classics Unabridged written by Anna Sewell and published by . This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Black Beauty is narrated in the first person as an autobiographical memoir told by the titular horse named Black Beauty--beginning with his carefree days as a colt on an English farm with his mother, to his difficult life pulling cabs in London, to his happy retirement in the country. Along the way, he meets with many hardships and recounts many tales of cruelty and kindness. Each short chapter recounts an incident in Black Beauty's life containing a lesson or moral typically related to the kindness, sympathy, and understanding treatment of horses, with Sewell's detailed observations and extensive descriptions of horse behavior lending the novel a good deal of verisimilitude. The book describes conditions among London horse-drawn taxicab drivers, including the financial hardship caused to them by high licence fees and low, legally fixed fares. A page footnote in some editions says that soon after the book was published, the difference between 6-day taxicab licences (not allowed to trade on Sundays) and 7-day taxicab licences (allowed to trade on Sundays) was abolished and the taxicab licence fee was much reduced.

Anna Sewell (30 March 1820 - 25 April 1878) was an English novelist, best known as the author of the classic 1877 novel Black Beauty. Biography: Anna Sewell was born on 30 March 1820 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, into a devoutly Quaker family. Her father was Isaac Phillip Sewell (1793-1879), and her mother, Mary Wright Sewell (1798-1884) was a successful author of children's books. She had one sibling, a younger brother named Philip and was largely educated at home. When she was twelve, the family moved to Stoke Newington where she attended school for the first time. Two years later, however, she slipped while walking home from school and severely injured her ankles. Her father took a job in Brighton in 1836, in the hope that the climate there would help to cure her. Despite this, and most likely because of mistreatment of her injury, for the rest of her life she could not stand without a crutch or walk for any length of time. For greater mobility, she frequently used horse-drawn carriages, which contributed to her love of horses and concern for the humane treatment of animals. At about this time, both Sewell and her mother left the Society of Friends to join the Church of England, though both remained active in evangelical circles. Her mother expressed her religious faith most noticeably by authoring a series of evangelical children's books, which she helped to edit, though all the Sewells, and Mary Sewell's family, the Wrights, engaged in many other good works. While seeking to improve her health in Europe, Sewell encountered various writers, artists, and philosophers, to which her previous background had not exposed her.....

Upon its publication in England in 1877, "Black Beauty" was an immediate bestseller and has since become one of the most widely-read and best-loved books in the English language, with over 50 million copies sold and numerous adaptations to film and other media. The book was not originally intended as a children's story, nor was it received as such when published. But it has become a staple among young readers and is still widely enjoyed today by readers of all ages in many nations. Written as an autobiography from the point of view of the horse, a unique literary device at the time, "Black Beauty" is an impassioned call for an end to cruelty to animals, and teaches the timeless values of kindness, respect and sympathy for all creatures, humans and animals alike. "Black Beauty" describes a horse's life through a series of owners and jobs and his relationships among the vast number of working horses which powered Victorian England in a variety of roles scarcely imaginable today. Through kindness, cruelty, neglect, injury and illness he maintains his dignity and integrity, remembering his mother's advice that while a horse can never control the actions of humans, he can always do his best and maintain his good name. Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was born into a Quaker family in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, and first became involved with literary work by helping to edit the writings of her mother, a successful author of children's books. Disabled by a childhood injury to both ankles, Anna used a crutch and was unable to walk or stand for any length of time. Her dependence on horse-drawn carriages contributed to her admiration for and interest in horses, and trips to European spas in the hope of improving her physical condition exposed her to a variety of writers and artists. "Black Beauty," Sewell's only published novel, was witten between 1871 and 1877, when her declining health had left her a near invalid. While she lived long enough to see the immediate success of her work, she died only five months after its publication, perhaps from hepatitis or tuberculosis.

Book excerpt: This unique tale is narrated by a lovely, gentle horse named Black Beauty and has remained a children's classic since it was first published in 1877. It earned eternal name and fame for its author Anna Sewell, an invalid who died within a few months of publication. According to current estimates, it has sold more than fifty million copies world wide, been translated into many languages and delighted generations of children. The original title page reads: Black Beauty: Translated from the original Equine by Anna Sewell and this gives the reader an instant glimpse into what the book will be about. As an autobiography written by a horse and told from his point of view, it was indeed an original and unique concept for the time. Strangely enough, Anna Sewell never intended the book to be exclusively read by children. She meant it to be a manual for those who worked with horses so that they would develop more compassion and kindness when dealing with these mute beasts. While it apparently talks about animals, the book is a great source of education for human beings too and teaches them how to treat each other with respect, dignity and kindness. The famous opening lines, "The first place I can well remember was a large pleasant meadow...." set the tone for the rest of the book. It traces the journey of the beautiful and noble horse, born in privileged circumstances whose life takes a turn for the tragic when her wealthy owner falls on hard times. Sold into a fashionable household, Beauty is ill-treated and uncared for till his health is finally broken. He is sold to a London cabbie and has to earn his keep pulling heavy carriages in all kinds of weather. The treatment of animals, their welfare and the conditions in which they're kept, the often inhuman and cruel attitude of people and animal rights are some of the topics touched upon. It is a book that can be read on several levels. For child readers, it is a delightful tale told by an animal. Adults would recognize the essential humanitarian appeal made by the author. In fact, such was the impact of the book that it led to several landmark legislations regarding animal welfare in Britain and America. Filled with memorable characters, vivid descriptions and poignant scenes, Black Beauty is indeed a fabulous book to settle in with for a pleasant read.
