Book excerpt: Whats the most sensitive subject in America today? That would be racism. But for the most part it has always been an issue between those of the black and white race, where whites reigned under false superiority. Though the subject is worldwide, the karma that those of the white race now suffer behind actions taken during their time of false reign has never been brought to the forefront of America and its children. Nor has the fact that it is Gods will that a black plague is now overshadowing America with the advancement of Blacks and all others of the brown skinned complexion. This book speaks of the karma that has now come back around to those of the white race and their children and covers certain aspects of actions taken to ensure that blacks would remain inferior under the powerful hand of the white government. The book covers the karma of things such as reading, learning, drugs, medicine, Emmet Till and even the physical aspect of blacks and whites that have never been brought to the forefront of America, about white America. It speaks of the advancement of the black race from a political and social standpoint, the influence that the black race has over white children of America, and how the white race is slowly becoming extinct due to the volume of women of all races having babies by black men.

This work by a scholar of the Kadam school is the most authoritative Tibetan commentary on Vasubandhu’s Treasury of Abhidharma (Abhidharmakosa). In terms of stature and authority, Vasubandhu’s Treasury rivals Buddhaghosa’s contemporaneous Path of Purification and deals with such central themes as the dynamics of emotions and karma, of mental and meditative states; it treats both the cosmos and the life within. Chim Jampalyang’s exposition of it is the greatest flowering of Abhidharma studies in Tibet. Usually referred to as the Chimzö, it is to this day a key textbook in the great monastic universities. A veritable encyclopedia, it spans all areas of classical Indian Buddhist knowledge and is an indispensable reference for scholars of Buddhism. The Library of Tibetan Classics is a special series being developed by the Institute of Tibetan Classics to make key classical Tibetan texts part of the global literary and intellectual heritage. Eventually comprising thirty-two large volumes, the collection will contain over two hundred distinct texts by more than a hundred of the best-known Tibetan authors. These texts have been selected in consultation with the preeminent lineage holders of all the schools and other senior Tibetan scholars to represent the Tibetan literary tradition as a whole.

As The First Value System, The Study Examines The Theravada Buddhism As Founded By The Buddha, Then Focuses On Its Application In Thailand, On Buddhist Ethics And Morality, On The Conflicts Between Some Aspects Of Buddhism And The Rapidly Changing Society And, Finally, On Various Movements Attempting To Reform Buddhism In That Country. As The Second Major Value System, The Study Examines The Role Which Animism And The Spirit Worship Play In The Daily Life Of The Thai People, Their Symbolism, And Their Fusion With Buddhism And Its Values And Institutions At The Grassroot Level Of The Society. As The Third Value System, The Study Discusses Various Theories Which Attempt To Explain The Psycho-Cultural Values And Attitudes Of The Thai People, How These Interact With Buddhism And Animism, And How They Add Another Dimension To The Already Complex Pattern Of Social Behaviour. These Three Value Systems Interact And Define The Parameters Within Which All Aspects Of The National Life Political, Cultural, Economic And Others Are Actualized. The Second Major Theme Of The Book Concentrates On The Position Of Women In Thailand. It Begins With The Explanation Of The Attitudes Which The Buddha Himself Held Towards The Women, Examines The Status Of Women In Early Buddhist Societies And Of Those Women Who Chose To Renounce The World And Join The Buddhist Order To Seek Personal Salvation, As Well As The Role Of The Lay Women In A Buddhist Society At That Time. The Book Then Focuses On The Position Of Women In The Thai Society Through Various Stages Of Its History, And Culminates In The Discussion Of The Legal Position Of Women Today And The Attempts To Improve Their Status. Inspired by the words of the beat writers and a rock-n-roll muse, Jez drops out of a physiotherapy degree and takes off overseas to follow his bliss. With a try anything once attitude, a passion for extreme sports, an interest in art and Eastern mysticism, and an around-the-world ticket with a few friends dotted across the globe, Jez seeks answers on the road. Based on a true story, we go a journey with Jez surfing magical waves in Bali; experimenting with mind-altering substances in London and Amsterdam; falling in love in Canada with a snowboarding pothead; camping with a Christian scientologist hippy in Oregon; and hitching a ride with Satan and the Anti-Christ in Mexico. Having a reflective nature, he keeps a journal, writes poetry, philosophy and emails his muse in Australia. Jez asks the questions; what really is success? What's my purpose? Where does this journey take one? Travel uproots his attachments, brings some answers and a new sense of freedom, whilst following the mystery. A novel begins to bud from Jez's musings, yet it's ending remains clouded by some unknown force. Black Sheep, White Light is a gripping tale of adventure, and the blooming of an artist on his quest for truth. It is a testimonial to following one's bliss and dreams, listening to one's heart, and surrendering to the mystery of life, no matter how challenging it can become. It's a story for those who dare to dream, journey, and follow their truths to where the light shines bright. "It's truly rare and precious to find a book which has this level of non-judgmental honesty, depth, sensitivity and respect whilst exploring the outer worlds of travel, extreme sports, sex, drugs and rock-n-roll." -Lisa Fitzpatrick Soul Purpose Coach & Author

Book Contemplative Studies Jainism

Download or read book Contemplative Studies Jainism written by Purushottama Bilimoria and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is one of the first wide-ranging academic surveys of the major types and categories of Jain praxis. It covers a breadth of scholarly viewpoints that reflect both the variegation in terms of spiritual practices within the Jain traditions as well as the Jain hermeneutical perspectives, which are employed in understanding its rich diversity. The volume illustrates a complex and nuanced understanding of the multifaceted category of Jain religious thought and practice. It offers a rare intrareligious dialogue within Jain traditions and at the same time, significantly broadens and enriches the field of Contemplative Studies to include an ancient, ascetic, non-theistic tradition. Meditation, yoga, ritual, prayer are common to all Indic spiritual traditions. By investigating these diverse, yet overlapping, categories one might obtain a sophisticated understanding of religious traditions that originally emerged in South Asia. Essays in this book demonstrate how these forms of praxis in Jainism, and the philosophies that anchor those practices, are interrelated, and when brought into dialogue, help to foster new tools for understanding a complex and variegated tradition such as Jain Dharma. This book will be useful to scholars and researchers of religious and theological studies, contemplative studies, Jain studies, Hindu studies, consciousness studies, Yoga studies, Indian philosophy and religion, sociology of religion, philosophy of religion, comparative religion, and South Asian studies, as well as general readers interested in the topic.

Book Karma

    Book Details:
  • Author : Johannes Bronkhorst
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2011-08-24
  • ISBN : 0824860152
  • Pages : 153 pages

Download or read book Karma written by Johannes Bronkhorst and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karma has become a household word in the modern world, where it is associated with the belief in rebirth determined by one’s deeds in earlier lives. This belief was and is widespread in the Indian subcontinent as is the word “karma” itself. In lucid and accessible prose, this book presents karma in its historical, cultural, and religious context. Initially, karma manifested itself in a number of religious movements—most notably Jainism and Buddhism—and was subsequently absorbed into Brahmanism in spite of opposition until the end of the first millennium C.E. Philosophers of all three traditions were confronted with the challenge of explaining by what process rebirth and karmic retribution take place. Some took the drastic step of accepting the participation of a supreme god who acted as a cosmic accountant, others of opting for radical idealism. The doctrine of karma was confronted with alternative explanations of human destiny, among them the belief in the transfer of merit. It also had to accommodate itself to devotional movements that exerted a major influence on Indian religions. The book concludes with some general reflections on the significance of rebirth and karmic retribution, drawing attention to similarities between early Christian and Indian ascetical practices and philosophical notions that in India draw their inspiration from the doctrine of karma.

Book Deconstruction and the Ethical in Asian Thought

Download or read book Deconstruction and the Ethical in Asian Thought written by Youru Wang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The striking parallels between Derrida’s deconstruction and certain strategies eschewing oppositional hierarchies in Asian thought, especially in Buddhism and Daoism, have attracted much attention from scholars of both Western and Asian philosophy. This book contributes to this discussion by focusing on the ethical dimension and function of deconstruction in Asian thought. Examining different traditions and schools of Asian thought, including Indian Buddhism, Zen, other schools of East Asian Buddhism, the Kyoto School, and Daoism, the contributors explore the central theme from different contexts and different angles. Insights and notions from the contemporary discussion of Derridean deconstruction and its ethic or Derridean-Levinasian ethic as a paradigm for comparison or interpretation are used as a framework. Furthering our understanding of the relationship between deconstruction and the ethical in Asian traditions, this book also enriches the contemporary ethical discourse from a global perspective by bridging Asia and the West.

Book Contemplative Literature

Download or read book Contemplative Literature written by Louis Komjathy and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology of primary texts on meditation and contemplative prayer from a wide range of religious traditions. This is the first theoretically informed and historically accurate comparative anthology of primary texts on meditation and contemplative prayer. Written by international experts on the respective texts and corresponding traditions, Contemplative Literature provides introductions to and primary sources on contemplative practice from various religious traditions. The contributors explore classical Daoist apophatic meditation, Quaker silent prayer, Jewish Kabbalah, Southern Buddhist meditation, Sufi contemplation, Eastern Orthodox prayer, Pure Land Buddhist visualization, Hindu classical Yoga, Dominican Catholic prayer, Daoist internal alchemy, and modern therapeutic meditation. Each introduction to a contemplative text discusses its historical context, the associated religious tradition and literature, the method of contemplative practice, and the text’s legacy and influence. Volume editor Louis Komjathy opens the work with a thoughtful consideration of interpretive issues in the emerging interdisciplinary field of contemplative studies. Readers will gain not only a nuanced understanding of important works of contemplative literature, but also resources for understanding contemplative practice and contemplative experience from a comparative and cross-cultural perspective. “We have not seen anything this bold and this global since Friedrich Heiler wrote his classic study on the typology of prayer over eighty years ago. Komjathy and his essayists have vastly expanded the scope, depth, and sophistication of this project here. In the process, they have struggled with all of the critical questions around religious pluralism, tradition, and religious authority, and have emboldened the comparative project itself. Contemplation and comparison, it turns out, go very well together.” — Jeffrey J. Kripal, author of Comparing Religions: Coming to Terms “Teachers and scholars, undergraduate and graduate students, and general readers interested in contemplative practice will cherish a book like this. I’m happy that Louis Komjathy has done this great work. It will undoubtedly be hailed as a milestone.” — Ruben L. F. Habito, author of Healing Breath: Zen for Christians and Buddhists in a Wounded World
