Book BL Lac Objects

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laura Maraschi
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 1989-09-06
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 520 pages

Download or read book BL Lac Objects written by Laura Maraschi and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989-09-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gives a comprehensible survey of BL Lac objects: contributors summarize observations on these interesting astrophysical objects and present theoretical models to explain them. Understanding these objects should help to give a better insight into the physics of black holes and relativistic plasmas. Topics addressed cover radio jets expanding at superluminal velocities, possible effects of relativistic jets on interstellar matter, the continuum emission over the whole electromagnetic system and its variability, and the impact of these observations on gravitational lensing and cosmological evolution. The book should be immensely useful for graduate students.

Download or read book Variability of Blazars written by E. VALTAOJA (Ed) and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blazars (also known as BL Lac objects), first discovered in 1978, are unusually energetic objects in the extragalactic universe. About 200 are known or suspected. They are radio sources with highly variable optical and radio emission, as well as high polarisation, and their optical spectra normally have no distinguishable features. It is generally accepted that they belong to that class of galaxies with active galactic nuclei, which are presumed to be driven by infall of matter to a supermassive black hole. In this book researchers give a complete summary of the observations of blazars and the theoretical interpretation. A comprehensive listing of confirmed and candidate objects is included. Mechanisms in which the variability can arise from shocks and relativistic jets are discussed. There are at least four different answers given to the question: what is a blazar? This book is a complete overview of the violent activity observed in these extreme active galactic nuclei.

Book Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation

Download or read book Very High Energy Cosmic Gamma Radiation written by Felix A. Aharonian and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma ray astronomy, the branch of high energy astrophysics that studies the sky in energetic ?-ray photons, is destined to play a crucial role in the exploration of nonthermal phenomena in the Universe in their most extreme and violent forms. The great potential of this discipline offers impressive coverage of many OC hot topicsOCO of modern astrophysics and cosmology, such as the origin of galactic and extragalactic cosmic rays, particle acceleration and radiation processes under extreme astrophysical conditions, and the search for dark matter."

Book Galaxies in the Universe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Linda S. Sparke
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2007-02-05
  • ISBN : 9780521855938
  • Pages : 442 pages

Download or read book Galaxies in the Universe written by Linda S. Sparke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-05 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively illustrated book presents the astrophysics of galaxies since their beginnings in the early Universe. It has been thoroughly revised to take into account the most recent observational data, and recent discoveries such as dark energy. There are new sections on galaxy clusters, gamma ray bursts and supermassive black holes. The authors explore the basic properties of stars and the Milky Way before working out towards nearby galaxies and the distant Universe. They discuss the structures of galaxies and how galaxies have developed, and relate this to the evolution of the Universe. The book also examines ways of observing galaxies across the whole electromagnetic spectrum, and explores dark matter and its gravitational pull on matter and light. This book is self-contained and includes several homework problems with hints. It is ideal for advanced undergraduate students in astronomy and astrophysics.

Book Faint Objects and How to Observe Them

Download or read book Faint Objects and How to Observe Them written by Brian Cudnik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faint Objects and How to Observe Them is for visual observers who are equipped with a 10-inch or larger astronomical telescope and who want to "go deep" with their observing. It provides a guide to some of the most distant, dim, and rarely observed objects in the sky, supported by background information on surveys and objects lists - some familiar, such as Caldwell, and some not so familiar. This book not only provides a wealth of experience compiled from several sources, but it also gives an historical background to surveys whose names may or may not be familiar to most amateur astronomers. Finally, it includes a listing of the many galaxy clusters out there, from "nearby" ones such as Stefan's Quintet to some of the most distant groups observable through the largest telescopes.

Book Parsec Scale Radio Jets

Download or read book Parsec Scale Radio Jets written by J. Anton Zensus and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-08-16 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quasars and active galaxies are the most powerful emitters of radiation in the universe. Modern radio telescope arrays have shown that the ultimate energy source resides in the central few parsecs of the galactic nucleus, and powers the emitting regions by way of two oppositely-directed relativistic jets of energy. This volume presents the latest observations and theories of these remarkable objects. Topics discussed include superluminal motions, the physics of jets and shock fronts in jets, related optical observations, and cosmic evolution. Particular attention is given to the "unified theories," which attempt to show that many of the phenomena in powerful extragalactic objects are different aspects of a single, basic mechanism; the main difference in their appearance is a result of their different orientation with respect to the observer.
