Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely investigation of the most innovative recent urban housing constructions The design of high-density housing is inextricably linked to the growth of towns and cities: as urban centers have increased in both geographical size and density, housing has had to be provided to accommodate the numbers and needs of the population. Whether highly visible or merged with the existing cityscape, a vast proportion of the fabric of any city is made up of residential space. New Urban Housing looks at a selection of some of the most inventive contemporary projects built in countries around the world. Author Hilary French provides a comprehensive introduction to this building type, from its industrial beginnings in London and Paris to New York City's Lower East Side and the 20th-century designs of Le Corbusier, Antonio Sant'Elia, and Mies van der Rohe. Lavishly illustrated, the book examines different formal typologies of urban housing: terrace and row houses, quadrangles and courtyards, city blocks and infill (or renovated and reused sites), and towers and slab blocks. Thirty-six case studies from fourteen countries are presented by architects including Steven Holl, Richard Meier, KoningEizenbergArchitecture, Eduardo Souto de Moura, and Renzo Piano. Each is illustrated in full color and is accompanied by detailed plans and sections that discuss the needs of the site and place the project in its surrounding context. New Urban Housing features these buildings and more: - Contemporaine, Chicago - Donnybrook Quarter, London - Harold Way Apartments, Hollywood - Mondrian Apartments, Sydney - Simmons Hall, MIT, Cambridge, MA - Yerba Buena Lofts, San Francisco

Book The Croatian Spring

Download or read book The Croatian Spring written by Ante Batovic and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nationalism is a key topic within Balkan Studies, and one of the driving forces behind the bloody and difficult history of the region. Using primary sources not previously utilized by western scholars, this book documents the 'Croatian Spring' - a national and liberal movement that began in the mid-sixties after the fall of the vice president and head of the Yugoslav secret police Aleksandar Rankovic. The author chronicles these developments of democratisation and de-centralisation of communist Yugoslavia, placing them in the wider context of the Cold War and Yugoslav relations with the Soviet Union and the UnitedStates. Tito managed to balance national stability and his relations with East and West, until he felt that the national-liberal movements challenged his authority, and thus threaten the very foundations of the Yugoslav state. From late 1971 onwards, the liberal political and cultural classes of Croatia and other republics were abruptly purged, impoverishing Yugoslav leadership for subsequent decades.Batovic also considers the role of the West, who felt a centralised and stable Yugoslavia was in their interests and quickly accommodated themselves to the repression of the reformist movement.

Book Trade and Employment in Developing Countries Volume 1

Download or read book Trade and Employment in Developing Countries Volume 1 written by Anne O. Krueger and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book of a three-volume study examines the way trade policies in developing countries affect the level and composition of employment. There is special emphasis on the effects of import substitution policies that attempt to make a country self-sufficient by producing local substitutes for imports, as compared with policies that further the expansion of imports. Ten countries are studied: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, the Ivory Coast, Pakistan, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, and Uruguay. The contributors to the volume analyze the link between trade strategies and employment within a common framework, and the analyses of trade policy include the level and structure of protection, the relation of trade policy to labor demand, the labor intensiveness of trade, and the extent of distortions in factor markets and their effects on trade.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Hobbes

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Hobbes written by A.P. Martinich and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Hobbes collects twenty-six newly commissioned, original chapters on the philosophy of the English thinker Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679). Best known today for his important influence on political philosophy, Hobbes was in fact a wide and deep thinker on a diverse range of issues. The chapters included in this Oxford Handbook cover the full range of Hobbes's thought--his philosophy of logic and language; his view of physics and scientific method; his ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of law; and his views of religion, history, and literature. Several of the chapters overlap in fruitful ways, so that the reader can see the richness and depth of Hobbes's thought from a variety of perspectives. The contributors are experts on Hobbes from many countries, whose home disciplines include philosophy, political science, history, and literature. A substantial introduction places Hobbes's work, and contemporary scholarship on Hobbes, in a broad context.

Book Spinoza s Epistemology through a Geometrical Lens

Download or read book Spinoza s Epistemology through a Geometrical Lens written by Matthew Homan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book interrogates the ontology of mathematical entities in Spinoza as a basis for addressing a wide range of interpretive issues in Spinoza’s epistemology—from his antiskepticism and philosophy of science to the nature and scope of reason and intuitive knowledge and the intellectual love of God. Going against recent trends in Spinoza scholarship, and drawing on various sources, including Spinoza’s engagements with optical theory and physics, Matthew Homan argues for a realist interpretation of geometrical figures in Spinoza; illustrates their role in a Spinozan hypothetico-deductive scientific method; and develops Spinoza’s mathematical examples to better illuminate the three kinds of knowledge. The result is a portrait of Spinoza’s epistemology as sanguine and distinctive yet at home in the new Cartesian and Galilean scientific-philosophical paradigm.
