Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Songbirds of the West includes more than four dozen songbirds that occur within the western United States. The majority are found in America’s western National Parks, especially in parks where the author worked for more than a quarter of a century. Big Bend National Park is where he encountered Black-capped and Gray Vireos, Vermilion Flycatchers, Curve-billed and Crissal Thrashers, Hepatic and Summer Tanagers, and Black-vented, Hooded and Scott’s Orioles. Black-billed Magpies were encountered at Great Sand Dunes, Clark’s Nutcrackers at Crater Lake, Cave Swallows at Carlsbad Caverns, Cactus Wrens at Saguaro, Phainopeplas at Organ Pipe, Steller’s and Gray Jays at Yellowstone, Black-throated Gray Warblers at Mesa Verde, Townsend’s Solitaires at Timpanogos Cave, and Canyon and Rock Wrens at Zion. Great Kiskadees, Green Jays, and Altamira Orioles were encountered in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The discussion of each bird is based on the author’s personal encounters. These range from casual observations to scientific studies which were undertaken in both the U.S. and Mexico; still others involved visits to the West Indies. The bird’s life history, behavior and status are included.

Book excerpt: Morbid, but strangely fascinating accounts In 2015, a group of seven hikers were killed when a sudden flood struck Keyhole Canyon in Zion National Park. Prior to that, the steep, narrow route to Angels Landing led to at least five fatalities. Numerous people have found that high, exposed places in Zion—such as rim trails—are bad places to be in lightning storms. Death in Zion National Park collects some of the most gripping accounts in park history of the unfortunate events caused by natural forces or human folly.

Download or read book The Birds of Turkey written by Guy Kirwan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Birds of Turkey is the first avifauna to document this country's amazing ornithological diversity. Turkey - ornithologically one of the most fascinating countries in the Western Palearctic - lies not only at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, but also at the meeting point of a variety of biomes. The extensive semi-deserts of the Middle East reach their northernmost limit in southeastern Turkey, while the Pontic Mountains, which dominate much of the north of the country, support a principally European fauna, along with near-endemics such as Caucasian Grouse, Green Warbler, Caspian Snowcock and Krüper's Nuthatch. In Central Turkey, huge saline lakes hold colonies of flamingos, pelicans and Pygmy Cormorants, while the surrounding semi-steppe supports populations of Montagu's Harrier, Great Bustard and abundant lakes. The book looks in detail at every species ever reported in the country - breeding birds, passage migrants, winter visitors and vagrants - with a review of status and distribution, accurate distribution maps, and discussions of breeding biology and the latest taxonomic revisions. Introductory chapters provide overviews of Turkey's major biomes and the history or ornithology in the country, and a discussion of future research objections. The book also contains stunning colour photography by a number of leading Turkish ornithologists. Indispensable for anyone interested in the Turkish avifauna, The Birds of Turkey will remain the standard work on this key ornithological region for many years to come.
