Book The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in West Virginia

Download or read book The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in West Virginia written by Richard S. Bailey and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in West Virginia is the most comprehensive description of bird life in the Mountain State ever published. Building on the first Atlas, published in 1994, this book documents the occurrence of 170 species of breeding birds, including three new species and one whose last breeding record was in 1888. Compiled from the efforts of almost two hundred volunteers, who worked from 2009 to 2014 to amass more than one hundred thousand records and conduct point-count surveys, the Atlas presents detailed information about each species and two hybrids. Species accounts are accompanied by maps that show breeding evidence, as well as estimates of occurrence, change in occurrence, and population density. The volume covers state geography, climate, and changing habitats. It includes both a discussion of conservation concerns important to the state's breeding birds and a history of state ornithology and changes in West Virginia's avifauna drawn from observations and research from the nineteenth through the twenty-first century. Featuring up-to-date information about 170 bird species and hundreds of beautiful color photographs--nearly all of which are identified by county locations--The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in West Virginia is an indispensable resource for researchers, conservationists, and birders.

Book A Short History of Virginia City

Download or read book A Short History of Virginia City written by Ronald M. James and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1859, Virginia City quickly became world famous for its extraordinary prosperity. Over the next two decades, the mines of “the Richest City on Earth” yielded millions in gold and silver. The newly wealthy built mansions and churches, opera houses and schools, with furniture, fashions, and entertainment imported from Europe and the Far East. Here young Samuel Clemens, reporting for the Territorial Enterprise in 1863, first called himself Mark Twain. At its height Virginia City was a magnet for immigrants and the world leader in technological innovations in mining. The city’s story did not end when the Comstock Lode played out. Beginning in the 1930s, bohemian artists, literati, and tourists were intrigued by this remnant of the Old West. The leader of Manhattan’s café society, Lucius Beebe, moved here and relaunched the Territorial Enterprise in 1950. Television’s most popular western from 1959 to 1973, Bonanza, located its fictional Ponderosa Ranch nearby. In the summer of 1965, a handful of Bay Area musicians, including Big Brother and the Holding Company, performed at the Red Dog Saloon and launched psychedelic rock, part of the inspiration for a defining decade of youth culture. Today it is both a National Historic Landmark District and a living community. Visitors come to enjoy its saloons and restaurants, admire its architecture, and learn from its museums and exhibits. A Short History of Virginia City will enhance their experience and will also be enjoyed by anyone interested in the history of Nevada, mining, and the Old West. • Includes an illustrated walking tour describing more than thirty buildings and sites

Book To Petersburg with the Army of the Potomac

Download or read book To Petersburg with the Army of the Potomac written by Levi Bird Duff and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-09-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters of Levi Bird Duff present a perceptive picture of life in the Army of the Potomac from 1861 to 1864. They are unusual for their literacy, descriptions and continuity, the strength of opinions expressed, and their source: a private who rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel, thus a witness of the army at several levels. Leadership, organizational, weather, and morale problems that plagued Union troops are made clear. Written only for the eyes of Duff's love, the messages reflect the tension experienced by many soldiers between the conflicting calls of duty and affection.

Book Reinventing the Automobile

Download or read book Reinventing the Automobile written by William J. Mitchell and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010-01-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to leave behind our unwieldy, gas-guzzling, carbon dioxide–emitting vehicles for cars that are green, smart, connected, and fun. This book provides a long-overdue vision for a new automobile era. The cars we drive today follow the same underlying design principles as the Model Ts of a hundred years ago and the tail-finned sedans of fifty years ago. In the twenty-first century, cars are still made for twentieth-century purposes. They are inefficient for providing personal mobility within cities—where most of the world's people now live. In this pathbreaking book, William Mitchell and two industry experts reimagine the automobile, describing vehicles of the near future that are green, smart, connected, and fun to drive. They roll out four big ideas that will make this both feasible and timely. The fundamental reinvention of the automobile won't be easy, but it is an urgent necessity—to make urban mobility more convenient and sustainable, to make cities more livable, and to help bring the automobile industry out of crisis.
