Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Almanda Project is restoring rare and beautiful native habitat along eight riparian areas (wetland areas along watercourses) of the Scott Creek sub-catchment within the Scott Creek Conservation Park. Scott Creek Conservation Park is an important biodiversity hotspot of considerable conservation value in the Mount Lofty Ranges south of Adelaide, South Australia. There are few surviving examples of riparian areas in the Mount Lofty Ranges due to land clearing and draining farmland since European settlement. The riparian areas that remain are rapidly degrading due to livestock grazing, week invasion, active erosion, and altered water regimes. The Friends of Scott Creek was established in 1990 and, since that time, have been restoring habitat in the Conservation Park. The Friends group initiated the Almanda Project in 2014 to restore native habitat for twenty-six state-threatened species and two state-threatened species in the eight important riparian areas. The Almanda Project is named after the Almanda Swamp and Creek system in the centre of the park, where historic ruins of an old silver mine, established in 1868, can still be seen today. The project is restoring and increasing the extent of quality of habitat by strategically removing large infestations of serious environmental weeds to facilitate natural regeneration and targeted revegetation. The project is integrated with regional and local government conservation programs. The Almanda Report 2016 begins with a progress report from Peter Wotton, the new president of Friends of Scott Creek Conservation Park, in which he pays tribute to Tom Hands, the highly regarded founding president who sadly passed away late last year. The report describes the methods for successful weed management and the work being done in each of the major creek systems, including Almanda Creek, Blackwater Creek, Fern Gully, and Mackereth Creek. The Mackereth Creek system will realize the benefits of a long-term plan thanks to a partnership with the US-based clothing company Patagonia Inc.

Book Almanda Report 2015

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Wamsley
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2015-09-10
  • ISBN : 150350946X
  • Pages : 90 pages

Download or read book Almanda Report 2015 written by John Wamsley and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important aspects of the Almanda Project is that this book, together with annual updates, will provide a record of every aspect of riparian zone habitat restoration. We will be closely monitoring this restoration over a ten year plus time-frame. We hope to provide, for the first time, a guide for all those undertaking this type of work and at the same time build an audit system which will track our progress, successes and failures. As nature is never predictable, close observation of all stages of the work we hope, will provide new insights into the processes of habitat restoration. Constant monitoring and auditing of our work will assist us in achieving the best outcomes for all native species. We believe that for the long term recovery of degraded ecosystems, comprehensive and pro-active monitoring is the only way of measuring success. It is not good enough to view the eradication of weed species and the return of a few native species as an end in itself. Native plants are only a part of the mix. Every year, for the life of the Project, there will be fully updated ecological reports using the BushRAT (Bush Rapid Assessment Technique) method, on areas begun and new reports on those systems prior to their restoration. We also hope to enlist the services of other disciplines of ecosystem studies such as entomologists, (given invertebrates underpin the success or otherwise of most ecosystems), herpetologists, bird and mammal specialists. We hope this book and subsequent updates will be a valuable manual and guide for any individual or group wishing to undertake similar projects.

Book Fitness Costs and Benefits of Female Song

Download or read book Fitness Costs and Benefits of Female Song written by Michelle L. Hall and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bird song, traditionally regarded as primarily a male trait, is in fact widespread among female songbirds and was probably present in the ancestor of modern songbirds (Odom et al 2014 Nature Communications). These recent findings challenge the view that sexual dimorphism in the expression and complexity of song is largely the outcome of sexual selection on males. It is now clear that understanding the evolution of bird song requires explaining variation within and among species in the expression and complexity of female song. To do this, we need a better understanding of the nature of variation in female song in different contexts and systems, as well as the fitness costs and benefits of variation in the expression and complexity of female song. This Research Topic draws together current research on female song with the goal of understanding the fitness costs and benefits of the diversity of female singing behaviour apparent among songbirds. It includes articles ranging from single-species studies investigating how female song varies with context and contrasts with male song, to comparative analyses exploring relationships between female song and ecological, social, and other factors, as well as opinion pieces.

Book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020

Download or read book The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 written by Stephen T. Garnett and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 is the most comprehensive review of the status of Australia's avifauna ever attempted. The latest in a series of action plans for Australian birds that have been produced every decade since 1992, it is also the largest. The accounts in this plan have been authored by more than 300 of the most knowledgeable bird experts in the country, and feature far more detail than any of the earlier plans. This volume also includes accounts of over 60 taxa that are no longer considered threatened, mainly thanks to sustained conservation action over many decades. This extensive book covers key themes that have emerged in the last decade, including the increasing impact of climate change as a threatening process, most obviously in Queensland's tropical rainforests where many birds are being pushed up the mountains. However, the effects are also indirect, as happened in the catastrophic fires of 2019/20. Many of the newly listed birds are subspecies confined to Kangaroo Island, where fire destroyed over half the population. But there are good news stories too, especially on islands where there have been spectacular successes with predator control. Such uplifting results demonstrate that when action plans are followed by action on the ground, threatened species can indeed be recovered and threats alleviated.

Book Restoring America s Wildlife 1937 1987

Download or read book Restoring America s Wildlife 1937 1987 written by Harmon Kallman and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fittingly, the Act's chief sponsors were a Senator from Nevada, Key Pittman, and a Representative from Virginia, A. Willis Robertson. The Pittman-Robertson Act, as it came to be called, sped through Congress and was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt on September 2, 1937. From a modest beginning, the Pittman-Robertson program has grown with the economy and the human population of our country. By now it has channeled nearly $1.7 billion in Federal excise tax receipts, augmented by some $600 million from the States, into activities to restore wildlife. The projects include State acquisition of acreage needed to bring wildlife back, research into wildlife requirements and problems, active management of habitats, and development of scientific ways to enable wildlife and people to share our land in harmony. The program has strengthened State governments and built wildlife management into a respected profession.

Book excerpt: A quest for this quintessentially antipodean family of birds uncovers the tree of life and the landscapes of Australia and New Zealand. From the UK and a Singapore stopover, the traveller journeys to a week around Perth. Then two months in a campervan from Adelaide to Cairns, Queensland. He learns how the tree of life connects the whole globe. The route also skirts floods and cyclones. A fortnight in Tasmania and Victoria, with its fatal fires, concludes this far from straightforward quest for the 73 honeyeaters. Finally, New Zealand offers a coda with its own branch of the family. It's not just about birds: it's a last chance to witness other survivors from the Triassic as they struggle against the latest mass extinction. Railways, cities and culture shock also play cameo roles.
