Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the New York City Region Seventeen years have passed since the appearance of Dr. Chapman's pamphlet on "The Birds of the Vicinity of New York City." This publication briefly summarized the information about our local birds available at that time, and was a veritable mine of inspiration and assistance to the modern generation of field ornithologists and amateur bird students, who were then just beginning work. It is difficult to conceive the change that has taken place in these seventeen years. For one person interested in birds then there are now hundreds, who cover almost every section of the area at every season of the year. When Dr. Chapman wrote, not only were many parts of his territory without a resident student, but many sections had never even been visited by anyone interested in birds, or had remained unvisited for many years. Twenty-five years ago an active field man went out collecting a few dozen times a year, or made two or three trips lasting a week or so apiece. Nowadays an active student will often be afield a hundred times in one year. The result is an enormous mass of data and notes of all kinds, which, when digested and arranged, greatly extend the knowledge of our birds, and modify many old conceptions of their status and distribution. The Linnaean Society of New York, throughout this period, has been the main center and nucleus for this growth of ornithological interest. At its meeting of October 14, 1919, Dr. Chapman moved that a committee be appointed to prepare as complete and detailed a Local Avifauna as present knowledge permitted. This committee, appointed somewhat later, consisted of Mr. J. T. Nichols as chairman, Dr. E. R. P. Janvrin, and the writer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Ornithology is the first quantitative historical analysis of any New York City natural area’s birdlife and spans the century and a half from 1872 to 2016. Only Manhattan’s Central and Brooklyn’s Prospect Parks have preliminary species lists, not revised since 1967, and the last book examining the birdlife of the entire New York City area is now more than fifty years old. This book updates the avifaunas of those two parks, the Bronx, and other New York City boroughs. It treats the 301 bird species known to have occurred within its study area—Van Cortlandt Park and the adjacent Northwest Bronx—plus 70 potential additions. Its 123 breeding species are tracked from 1872 and supplemented by quantitative breeding bird censuses from 1937 to 2015. Gains and losses of breeding species are discussed in light of an expanding New York City inexorably extinguishing unique habitats.

Download or read book Wild Birds of New York Classic Reprint written by Chester A. Reed and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Birds of New York This little book is not expected to give everyone a complete history of the birds of this state. To do so would require an immense volume. But it is designed to bring to the attention of the reader the most common, the most interesting and the most valuable birds and to create an interest which it is hoped will be the means of starting many on a more extended study of our most interesting fauna. In the last few pages is a quite complete list of New York birds and concise data in regard to their occurrence. As might be expected considering the size and location of the state, a very great many species occur or have been taken here. The sandy beaches and mud flats of Long Island furnish an ideal retreat or resting place for all sorts of water fowl and shore birds. The Carolinian Area of the Austral Zone extends to Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley; hence a great many southern species occur, species that otherwise would be very unusual in this latitude, such as Kentucky, Hooded and Worm-eating Warblers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds Around New York City: Where and When to Find Them New York had pointed out that abnormal dates of occurrence were receiving far too much attention in relation to their importance, while many Of the blanks in our knowledge of the normal picture were being somewhat or entirely over looked. The compilation Of unusual records and their sub sequent publication in an Ornithological Year, in many instances came dangerously near presenting an abnormal picture of our local avifauna without definitely warning a reader Of that fact. The purpose Of the present book, it was conceded, Should be to present a detailed normal picture in So far as space would permit and to mention unusual dates and occurrences merely as abnormalities. The earliest arrival and the latest departure dates of a species are no more im portant, if as important, as the local periods of maximum abundance for the species. Yet this latter information had all too Often been neglected in publications on local bird migrations. I have carefully analyzed all available data to obtain these important facts. Download or read book Birds of New York Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Elon Howard Eaton and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of New York, Vol. 2 Climatic. Of the natural factors which influence the bird life of any part of the world, those due to the climate are undoubtedly of foremost importance. Among these is light, the effect of which may be illustrated by reference to owls, goatsuckers and woodcocks, which feed mostly by night or in the twilight, and in the daytime must hide away in hollows or dark portions of the forest. To a less extent the influence of this factor is observed in those forest species such as many thrushes and wood warblers whose eyes are noticeably larger than those of their relatives which live in more open surroundings, and unquestionably the intensity of light affects their nervous equilibrium to such an extent that it even determines their presence or absence in a given locality, apart from all other factors. Temperature has usually been considered the most important climatic factor and is the principal one taken into account by the United States Biological Survey in mapping the distribution of animals in America. As illustrations of this factor, it is frequently evident when surveying a ravine in central New York or when approaching the outskirts of the Adirondacks, that such species as the Junco, Canada warbler and Hermit thrush will frequently be present or absent according as the average temperature varies 2 or 3 degrees during the six hottest weeks of summer. Of very great importance is the humidity, which is largely dependent upon temperature and, with it, regulates the distribution of many species.
