Download or read book Bird Surveys at McKinley Bay and Hutchison Bay Northwest Territories in 1992 written by D. Lynne Dickson and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerial surveys for bird abundance and distribution were conducted in August 1992 at McKinley Bay, Northwest Territories. The Bay is the site of a winter harbour for drillships and a proposed location for a major year-round base for oil and gas exploration in the Beaufort Sea. The 1992 surveys represented the continuation of a long-term monitoring study of birds in McKinley Bay and Hutchinson Bay, a nearby area used as a control. The primary objectives of the 1992 surveys were to expand the set of baseline data on natural annual fluctuations in diving duck numbers, and to determine if numbers of diving ducks had changed since the initial set of surveys from 1981 to 1985. Survey techniques were identical to previous years.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "McKinley Bay has been identified as a preferred site for a harbour to support oil and gas production in the Beaufort Sea. As the bay is a moulting area for several species of diving duck, this study was initiated to monitor the effect of harbour development on divers and other birds using the bay. Baseline information on the natural annual fluctuations in the number of birds were collected for nine years at McKinley Bay and eight years at nearby Hutchison Bay, the area chosen as the control. This is the final report of the predevelopment phase of the monitoring study. Results of the 1993 surveys and a summary of results of all years of surveys are presented"--Abstract, p. i.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Each spring during migration, hundreds of thousands of birds stop temporarily in offshore areas of the Beaufort Sea to feed, rest, and court. In 1992 and 1993, the Northern Oil and Gas Action Program provided funding to study spring waterbird distributions in relation to oil development. The objectives of this study were to: to examine spring waterbird distributions in offshore areas of the Beaufort Sea, Amundsen Gulf, and Lambert Channel; and to assess the potential threats from oil exploration and development to spring migrants in the southern Beaufort Sea. We flew aerial surveys for birds in May and June, 1992 and 1993. This report presents results from 1993"--Executive summary, p. i.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Each spring during migration, thousands of birds stop temporarily in offshore open-water areas of the Beaufort Sea to feed, rest, and court. Some proposed sites for offshore oil exploration and development are in the vicinity of possible key staging areas. The potential for oil spills in these areas is one of the most serious threats to birds in the western Arctic. Information on the distribution of birds during spring migration provides the basis for evaluating threats"--Executive summary.

Book excerpt: "Two eider populations breed in the western Canadian Arctic and winter in the Bering Sea: the Pacific subspecies of the Common Eider Somateria mollissima v-nigra and the western Arctic population of the King Eider S. spectabilis. Both eiders are harvested primarily in the spring by the Aboriginal people of northern communities and to a small extent in faIl by sport hunters. Some eggs of the colonially nesting Common Eider are also taken. Compared with other harvested waterfowl, there are few available data on even the most basic aspects of the biology of these two eider populations, induding their status and nesting distribution"--Introd.
