Book excerpt: Following the declaration of war by the United States, more than 200 American men, unwilling to wait until US squadrons could be raised, volunteered to join the Royal Flying Corps in the summer of 1917. Amongst these men was John MacGavock Grider and Elliott White Springs who both joined 85 Squadron to fly SE.5 fighters.During his service with the RFC and the RAF, Grider kept a record of his experiences from when he joined up until his untimely death in 1918, when he was shot down over the Western Front. Before his death, Grider had made a pact with Elliott White Springs that in the event of one of them dying, the other would complete their writings. Springs went on to write this book, an amalgamation of his own recollections and Griders diary and correspondence.War Birds records in detail the stresses of training and the terror and elation of failure and success during combats with the enemy the First World War. This unique edition of War Birds has been produced from a copy owned by another officer from 85 Squadron, Lieutenant Horace Fulford. In his copy, Fulford made numerous handwritten annotations and stuck in a number of previously unpublished photographs all of which have been faithfully reproduced.

Book Red Coats and Wild Birds

Download or read book Red Coats and Wild Birds written by Kirsten A. Greer and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, Britain maintained a complex network of garrisons to manage its global empire. While these bases helped the British project power and secure trade routes, they served more than just a strategic purpose. During their tours abroad, many British officers engaged in formal and informal scientific research. In this ambitious history of ornithology and empire, Kirsten A. Greer tracks British officers as they moved around the world, just as migratory birds traversed borders from season to season. Greer examines the lives, writings, and collections of a number of ornithologist-officers, arguing that the transnational encounters between military men and birds simultaneously shaped military strategy, ideas about race and masculinity, and conceptions of the British Empire. Collecting specimens and tracking migratory bird patterns enabled these men to map the British Empire and the world and therefore to exert imagined control over it. Through its examination of the influence of bird watching on military science and soldiers' contributions to ornithology, Red Coats and Wild Birds remaps empire, nature, and scientific inquiry in the nineteenth-century world.

Book Diary of a Bird

  • Author : H. Minot
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2010-11-09
  • ISBN : 9781456351250
  • Pages : 40 pages

Download or read book Diary of a Bird written by H. Minot and published by . This book was released on 2010-11-09 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diary of a Bird is an amusing piece of bird wisdom written by a little Black throated Green Warbler and translated into English. The warbler talks about life as he knows it, such as meeting and gossiping with other bird species, and the beauty of the forest where he lives, and more personal things such as the time his mate was angry because he wasn't helping enough with the nest. When a bird friend invites the writer to a huge meeting of all birds to discuss "The Destruction and Extermination of Birds" the reader gets a lesson in wildlife conservation from the various members of the great bird convention who relate their grievances. The statistics have been updated from the original version of the book but the lessons are the same. Although this enjoyable little book was originally written a century ago to awaken popular interest in the protection of our birds, the message it sends to the reader is just as important today. The many beautiful photos from the US Fish and Wildlife Service make this a special book for anyone who loves our feathered friends, young and old alike.
