Book excerpt: Birds are one of the most affectionate pets to have. If you make sure to give them the proper care and attention then they will return to you your tender loving care with their own brand of loving companionship for years to come. All birds have their own personality so caring for them will have to be a unique approach. Generally, no matter what type of bird you choose to own, your pet will need housing, proper diet, grooming and health treatment to ensure that they live a happy and long life. The bird cage is the most common type of housing chosen for pet birds, unless you want to put your pet in a breeding aviary. Your pet's bird cage will need to have large enough space so he can move around freely, even fly a bit from one end to the other end of the cage. A bird kept in a cage that's too small for him may tend to develop behavioral and mood problems. Bird foods will have to be specific to the type of breed you own. What works for parakeets, for instance, may not be good for cockatiels. So be sure to buy bird-specific ready-made bird food formulas at your pet stores to take care of his special dietary needs or check with the vet before stocking up. Most birds have an intelligent mind. So bird toys are a must for mental stimulation and to keep him entertained. If birds are not kept amused and contented, they may succumb to loneliness and depression and fall sick. Some plants, household products, food items and certain home conditions may pose dangers to the safety and health of your bird pet. Be sure you know about these environmental hazards before bringing a pet bird home. There's a lot to know about birds and keeping them as pets in your home. This book is a starter guide to the new pet bird owner. Book Bird Keeping as a Source of Lung Cancer and Other Human Diseases

Download or read book Bird Keeping as a Source of Lung Cancer and Other Human Diseases written by Peter A.J. Holst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birdkeeping is becoming increasingly popular, but could it threaten good health? This book discusses the evi- dence suggesting that keeping pet birds is a strong risk factor for lung cancer. Its relation to a number of other endpoints, including death before age 60 and spontaneous abortion, is also examined. In addition, the book looks at the diseases that can be transmitted from birds to man - a fairly unknown field in general medicine. For instance, birds are a source of airborne particles that can cause allergic reactions in humans. People who keep birds as pets tend to have a higher incidence of shortness of breath, colds, sore throats and other flu-like symptoms than those in households without birds. The evidence presented in this book is the result of a ten-year general practice survey. Some recommendations for future research are given.

Book Birds in a Cage

Download or read book Birds in a Cage written by Derek Niemann and published by Short Books. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At Warburg, Germany, in 1941, four British PoWs find an unexpected means of escape from the horrors of internment when they form a birdwatching society, and embark on an obsessive quest behind barbed wire. Through their shared love of birds, they overcome hunger, hardship, fear and stultifying boredom. Their quest draws in not only their fellow prisoners, but also some of the German guards, at great risk to them all... Derek Niemann draws on original diaries, letters and drawings, to tell of how Conder, Barrett, Waterston and Buxton were forged by their experiences as POWs into the giants of post war wildlife conservation. Their legacy lives on, in institutions such as the RSPB and the British Wildlife Trust.

Book Beaks Bones and Bird Songs

Download or read book Beaks Bones and Bird Songs written by Roger Lederer and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Reveals the strange and wondrous adaptations birds rely on to get by.” —National Audubon Society When we see a bird flying from branch to branch happily chirping, it is easy to imagine they lead a simple life of freedom, flight, and feathers. What we don’t see is the arduous, life-threatening challenges they face at every moment. Beaks, Bones, and Bird Songs guides the reader through the myriad, and often almost miraculous, things that birds do every day to merely stay alive. Like the goldfinch, which manages extreme weather changes by doubling the density of its plumage in winter. Or urban birds, which navigate traffic through a keen understanding of posted speed limits. In engaging and accessible prose, Roger Lederer shares how and why birds use their sensory abilities to see ultraviolet, find food without seeing it, fly thousands of miles without stopping, change their songs in noisy cities, navigate by smell, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are not afraid to say that we are fascinated by birds. Flying birds always provoke human admiration. There is this unexplained mysterious feeling that surrounds us when watching birds on the forest trees, in our backyard, at the ocean, sea, or lake. Birds are an infinite treasure of inspiration for humans, waking us up in the morning with beautiful birdsongs. Their little brain is of a size of an unshelled walnut and is associated with intelligent behavior and the same capabilities of humans and apes’ mental tasks. When you think about all the animals in the world, you quickly realize that birds are, in fact, among some of the most intelligent creatures we have on earth. Although there are more than ten thousand bird species worldwide, only a handful of them have made the list for the extremely talented and incredibly intelligent. So who are these super intelligent feathered friends? It is difficult to pick one. Perhaps kea, ravens, and crows are equally smart; while macaws, cockatoo, and jays are on the top of any list too. Who knew that an African gray is capable of working out the location of hidden food by using the kind of deduction and elimination skills previously seen only in humans and apes? And as you probably have heard, they are exceptional talkers! Today, we all know that it is bad to imprison birds in cages, but it was not always the case throughout the history. According to Stephen King, “Some birds are not meant to be caged, that’s all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild.” Due to beautiful poetry and cultural expressions, the flying bird became a symbol of freedom and independence. There are cases of historic acknowledgment of birdcages, especially in the Victorian era. People were listening to birdsongs in cages as it was their radio entertainment outlet. During wartimes, birds demonstrated their unique abilities in courageous heroic efforts to help humans in transferring information through the battlefields. The birds and birdcages both have a longtime history. Our love for the amazing earth creatures makes us stand out for their protection and safety to enjoy our shared inhabitants on the planet, and as for the birdcages, people find them pretty appealing in various ways of the aesthetic repurposing.

Download or read book Birds Their Cages and Their Keep written by K. A. Buist and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds, Their Cages and Their Keep: Being a Practical Manual of Bird-Keeping and Bird-Reading I claim the same rights for birds, lower in the scale of creation, yet alike gifted with a capacity for feeling, suffering, loving, and in an inferior measure, for thinking. A bird's instinct corresponds in its own proportion and degree to a man's power of thought mind it has not, but remember, -brains, nerves, and feelings, it has. Neglect occasions acute physical suffering affection and frequent notice awaken habits of observation and memory. In bird-keeping as a pursuit, it is safest at first to be guided by the teaching of books afterwards trust more implicitly to personal observation and experience than to any printed guide. At best, an author can only advise, inform, and lay down general rules. Different birds need different handfing.
