This book was released on 2008 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall goal of this study was to identify multiple scales of habitat use and habitat electivity by redband/steelhead trout and define the limiting factors affecting the distribution patterns of this species during summer flows. The main objective in chapter 2 was to identify the most important habitat associations that control the distribution patterns of threatened populations of redband/steelhead trout in the South Fork John Day River Basin. I found that the factors influencing the distribution patterns of trout in the basin were dependent on the thermal context and spatial extent of analysis. The inclusion of water temperature alone at large spatial scales explained most of the distribution of trout at the basin scale and that channel morphology was a very important factor at small spatial scales. The main objective in chapter 3 was to identify geophysical factors influencing the distribution pattern of threatened populations of redband/steelhead trout in the basin at multiple spatial scales. I found that the trout distribution patterns in the area could be described as a clustered distribution, with a strong selection for upstream-cold water reaches and small, well oxygenated, running water pools. My study reveals that the most influential factor at large spatial scales was water temperature and smaller scale channel morphology. Chapter 4 examines whether longitudinal-summer-stream temperature profiles in semi arid-environment streams can be used to index carrying capacities of threatened populations of redband/steelhead trout. My results show that, in the South Fork John Day Basin, stream temperature can be used as indicator of trout carrying capacity. The distribution redband/steelhead trout in summer is largely determined by the- physiologically influenced-preference that individuals have for habitats within specific temperature ranges.

Book Using Network Models to Predict Steelhead Abundance Middle Fork John Day Or

Download or read book Using Network Models to Predict Steelhead Abundance Middle Fork John Day Or written by Monica R. Blanchard and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the management of threatened and endangered species, informed population estimates are essential to gage whether or not recovery goals are being met. In the case of Pacific salmonids, this evaluation often involves sampling a small subset of the population and scaling up to estimate larger distinct populations segments. This is made complicated by the fact that fish populations are not evenly distributed along riverscapes but respond to physical and biological stream properties at varying spatial extents. We used rapid assessment survey methods and the River Styles classification to explore fish-habitat relationships at a continuous network scale. Semi-continuous surveys were conducted across nine streams in the upper Middle Fork John Day River watershed and increased the number of sites surveyed eight-fold over other monitoring methods within the watershed. Using this increased sample size and continuous habitat metrics we improved watershed-wide steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) abundance models. We first validated the distinctions among River Styles through a classification analysis using physical metrics measured at the rapid assessment sites. Overall classification accuracy, using a combination of reach and landscape scale metrics, was 88.3% and suggested that River Style classification was identifying variations in physical morphology within the watershed that was quantifiable at the reach scale. Leveraging the continuous River Styles classification of physical habitat and a continuous model of primary production improved the prediction of steelhead abundance across the network. Using random forest regressions, a model that included only habitat metrics resulted in R2 = 0.34, while using the continuous variables improved the model accuracy greatly to R2 = 0.65. Random forest allowed for further investigation into the predictor variables through the analysis of the partial dependence plots and identified a gross primary production threshold, below which production might be limiting steelhead populations. This method also identified the rarest River Style surveyed within the watershed, Confined-Valley Step Cascade, as the morphology that had the largest marginal effect on steelhead. The inherent physical properties and boundary conditions unique to each River Style has the potential to inform fish-habitat relationships across riverscapes and improve abundance estimates on a continuous spatial scale.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 25, 1999, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) listed the anadromous Oncorhynchus mykiss (O. mykiss), or steelhead, population in the Middle Columbia Evolutionarily Significant Unit (ESU) as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, and deemed that the federal Columbia River Hydropower System (FCRPS) posed jeopardy to this ESU. To mitigate for the impacts of the dams, the FCRPS Biological Opinion issued by NMFS, emphasized improving spawning and juvenile rearing habitat in the tributaries to achieve recovery of the population.

Book excerpt: This beautiful and definitive guide brings together the world's lead leading expert on North American trout and salmon, Robert Behnke, and the foremost illustrator in the field, Joseph Tomelleri. North America is graced with the greatest diversity of trout and salmon on earth. From tiny brook trout in mountain streams of the Northeast, to cutthroat trout in the rivers of the Rockies, to Chinook salmon of the Pacific, the continent is home to more than 70 types of trout and salmon. How this came to be, how they are related, and what makes them unique -- and so breathtaking -- is the story of Trout and Salmon of North America. The more than 100 illustrations of trout and salmon by Joseph Tomelleri showcased here exhibit a genius for detail, coloration, and proportion. Each portrait is made from field notes, streamside observations, photographs, and specimens collected by the artist. The result is a set of the most accurate and stunning illustrations of fish ever created. Robert Behnke has distilled 50 years of his research and writing about trout and salmon in completing this book. No one understands better than Behnke the diversity and conservation issues concerning these fishes or communicates so lucidly the biological wonders and complexities of their particular beauty. Also included are more than 40 richly detailed maps that clearly show the ranges of populations of trout and salmon throughout North America. An irresistible delight for anyone who appreciates natural history, Trout and Salmon of North America is a master guide to the natural elegance of our native fishes.

Book excerpt: This collection of papers which focuses on the role of water, sediment and catchment controls on channel processes, covers a range ofstudies ofconsiderable topical and geographical diversity. Field study areas span the deserts of Arizona and the Negev, upland areas from Dartmoor to the Alps, mid-temperate regions in the Swiss lowlands and in Ohio, tropical mountains and jungle in New Guinea and estuarine environments in Devon. The majority of the contributions rely on measurements specifically undertaken for the purpose of the particular study reported. This is undoubtedly the result of the recent trend of utilizing Held experiments in geomorphology. At the same time, it is hoped that the publication of this volume will contribute to the awareness of a need to develop wider and better theoretical bases in lluvial geomorphology. Such work may well be the focus of the coming twenty years. It has the potential to instill much more substance into process measurements at a particular site and to enhance their regional and systematic applicability.
