Book Update on Polymers for Ocular Drug Delivery

Download or read book Update on Polymers for Ocular Drug Delivery written by Atish S Mundada and published by Smithers Rapra. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eye is the most easily accessible site for topical administration of a medication. Drugs are commonly applied to the eye for localised action on the surface or in the interior of the eye. A major problem in ocular therapeutics is the attainment of an optimal drug concentration at the site of action. Poor bioavailability of drugs from ocular dosage forms is mainly due to the precorneal loss factors which include tear dynamics, non-productive absorption, transient residence time in the cul-de-sac, and the relative impermeability of the corneal epithelial membrane. Due to these physiological and anatomical constraints only a small fraction of the drug, effectively 1% or even less of the instilled dose is ocularly absorbed. The effective dose of medication administered ophthalmically may be altered by increasing the retention time of medication in contact with the surface of the eye. To date, Pharmaceutical Technologists have tried to develop different novel formulations like gel, ocular inserts, collagen shields, implants, liposomes, nanoparticles, penetration enhancers and in-situ gelling systems, in order to increase the bioavailability and duration of the therapeutic action of ocular drugs and polymers plays an important role in all these approaches. This book provides detailed information regarding all such polymers which have been used and shown to be excellent in improving the bioavailability of ocular drugs.

Download or read book Ophthalmic Drug Delivery written by M.F. Saettone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on Ophthalmie Drug Delivery, which was held in Pisa in October 1986. Topical ophthalmic therapy is a matter of interest to specialists from different fields (medical, pharmaceutical, chemical, technological, etc.), who, unfortunately, have a tendency to meet separately, thus limiting a diffusion of knowledge, ideas and experience that would greatly favour the overall pro gress in this area of research. The Symposium, for the first time in Europe, provided the opportunity for specialists from different disciplines and from different countfies to meet, to discuss and to share their experience. This multidisciplinary approach is reflected in the wide variety of topics that appear in the book. The papers are aimed at reviewing many of the complex, interrelated, medical pharmaceutical and technological facets of topical ophthalmic therapy. lt is our hope that they may stimulate further thought in this fascinating field, and may provide possible guidelines for future research. The editors wish to express their appreciation to the sponsors of the Symposium: Fidia Research Laboratories, whose generosity permitted the meeting tobe held, and the ltalian National Research Council (CNR, Progetto Finalizzato Chimica Fine e Secondaria) who gave its scientific tutorship. Thanks are also due to the other Symposium contributors, ACRAF SpA, Rome, and Allergan Italia SpA, Rome. The assistance, support and coopera tion given before, during and after the Symposium by Dr. Patrizia Chetoni, Dr. Maria Tilde Torracca and Dr. Elena Parolini arealso gratefully acknowledged.

Book Ocular Drug Delivery Systems

Download or read book Ocular Drug Delivery Systems written by Deepak Thassu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug discovery for ocular diseases has taken great strides in the last two decades. From cornea to choroid, new drugs have been formulated to address a great variety of ocular diseases. Yet without good drug delivery systems, these drugs are less effective than they might be or could even cause serious side effects. Ocular Drug Delivery Systems: Barriers and Application of Nanoparticulate Systems presents research on the development of currently marketed devices and recent trends in the topical delivery of drugs to the posterior of the eye. With contributions from leading pharmaceutical researchers and industry experts, eye researchers, surgeons, pharmacologists from academia, the National Eye Institute, and leading ophthalmic companies such as Pfizer, Allergan, and Novartis, the book presents the state of the art in the use of nanoparticles in ocular drug delivery systems and also sets the stage for future developments. This volume provides both a current evaluation and a future roadmap for developments in ocular drug delivery. The subjects range from biological needs to material challenges and finally to clinical applications for improving drug delivery for conditions where treatments already exist. It also explores areas where effective drugs may be currently available but yet need a safe, efficient, and efficacious delivery vehicle.

Book Ocular Theraputics and Drug Delivery

Download or read book Ocular Theraputics and Drug Delivery written by Indra K. Reddy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-12-12 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ocular therapeutics and drug delivery is a subject of interest to specialists from various disciplines such as chemical, biochemical, medical, pharmaceutical, and toxicological, it truly presents a unique situation requiring a multi-disciplinary approach in understanding and addressing various problems. Yet we see that scientists associated with these areas are working, by and large, independently of one another, thus limiting dissemination of knowledge, experience and ideas that would greatly enhance the overall progress in this area of research. Regrettably, the information currently available in ocular therapeutics and drug delivery, though extensive, is still fragmented into various disciplines making meaningful synthesis difficult. Several books are available that cover one or two aspects of the multi-disciplinary fields on an individual basis; however, none is available that covers all of them. The chapters contained in this book are specific to various interrelated areas of ocular therapeutics and drug delivery and are written by acknowledged experts from both academia and industry. The book itself is divided into five parts, namely: (I) overview, basic principles, and methodology; (II) pathopharmacology and clinical applications; (III) chemical/ biochemical approaches to ocular drug delivery; (IV) formulation and drug delivery considerations; and (V) industrial and regulatory considerations. Individual chapters in each section, apart from presenting a concise text, entail an extensive listing of references.

Book Nano Biomaterials For Ophthalmic Drug Delivery

Download or read book Nano Biomaterials For Ophthalmic Drug Delivery written by Yashwant Pathak and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-12 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This consolidated reference book addresses the various aspects of nano biomaterials used in ophthalmic drug delivery, including their characterization, interactions with ophthalmic system and applications in treatments of the ophthalmic diseases and disorders. In the last decade, a significant growth in polymer sciences, nanotechnology and biotechnology has resulted in the development of new nano- and bioengineered nano-bio-materials. These are extensively explored as drug delivery carriers as well as for implantable devices and scaffolds. At the interface between nanomaterials and biological systems, the organic and synthetic worlds merge into a new science concerned with the safe use of nanotechnology and nano material design for biological applications. For this field to evolve, there is a need to understand the dynamic forces and molecular components that shape these interactions. While it is impossible to describe with certainty all the bio physicochemical interactions at play at the interface, we are at a point where the pockets of assembled knowledge are providing a conceptual framework to guide this exploration, and review the impact on future product development. The book is intended as a valuable resource for academics and pharmaceutical scientists working in the field of polymers, polymers materials for drug delivery, drug delivery systems and ophthalmic drug delivery systems, in addition to medical and health care professionals in these areas.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 3642692222
  • Pages : 749 pages

Download or read book Pharmacology of the Eye written by M.L. Sears and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roots of the theory and practice of ocular pharmacology may be traced to the ancient Mesopotamian code of Hammurabi and then to several papyri reflecting the clinical interests of the Egyptians. The evolution of its art and science was irregularly paced until the nineteenth century when Kohler, in 1884, proved the anesthetic effect of cocaine on the cornea, and when Fraser, Laquer, Schmiedeberg, Meyer, and others studied the pharmacology of the autonomic nervous system by way of observations of the pupil. Advances in the past few decades have been nothing short of explosive. How can the student, physician, or basic research scientist stay in touch with these electrifying studies? To help with the answer to this question, the authors set as their goal the development of increased understanding so that the student, research scientist, and ophthalmologist can cope with the latest discoveries. The authors want to narrow what appears to be an ever-increasing gap between basic science and ophthalmology. The basic aspects of pharmacology have been presented in light of the natural physiology. In this regard, while distinctions among endogenous mechanisms, drug effects, and the pathogenesis of disease are to be separately recognized, appreciation must be given to the concept that both the desirable and unwanted manifestations or functions caused by either disease or drugs must very often represent a quantitative change in normal metabolic pathways.
