Book excerpt: The study of bioluminescence—visible light emitted by living organisms—is truly in progress, as these 35 papers contributed by 49 of the leading scientists active in this field attest. Not since E. Newton Harvey's Bioluminescence in 1952 has there appeared a more comprehensive and critical study. The approaches to the subject range from the purely chemical and physical to the purely biological. There are magnificent electron micrographs and some color plates. Originally published in 1966. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews

Download or read book Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews written by Kendric C. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the science of photobiology can be divided into four categories: to develop (I) ways to optimize the beneficial effects of light on man and his environment, (2) methods to protect organisms, including man, from the detrimental effects of light, (3) photochemical tools for use in studies of life processes, and (4) photochemical therapies in medicine. To achieve these goals will require the knowledgeable collaboration of biologists, chemists, engineers, mathematicians, physicians, and physicists; because photobiology is a truly multidisciplinary science. While a multidis ciplinary science is more intellectually demanding, it also has a greater potential for unexpected breakthroughs that can occur when data from several areas of science are integrated into new concepts for theoretical or practical use. Photochemical and Photobiological Reviews continues to provide in depth coverage of the many specialty areas of photobiology. It is hoped that these reviews will provide an important service to the younger scientists in the field and to senior scientists in related fields, because they provide a ready access to the recent literature in the field, and more importantly, they frequently offer a critical evaluation of the direction that the field is taking, or suggest a redirection when appropriate. Since it is important that this review series remain responsive to the needs of photochemists and photobiologists, the Editor would value com ments and suggestions from its readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We now find ourselves utilizing luciferase - luciferin proteins, ATP, genes and the whole complex of these interactions to observe and follow the progress or inhibition of tumors in animal models by measuring bioluminescence intensity, spatially and temporally using highly sophisticated camera systems. This book describes applications in preclinical oncology research by bioluminescence imaging (BLI) with a variety of applications. Chapters describe current methodologies for rapid detection of contaminants using the Milliflex system, and the use of bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) technology for monitoring physical interactions between proteins in living cells. Others are using bioluminescent proteins for high sensitive optical reporters imaging in living animals, developing pH-tolerant luciferase for brighter in vivo imaging, and oscillation characteristics in bacterial bioluminescence. The book also contains descriptions of the long-term seasonal characteristics of oceanic bioluminescence and the responsible planktonic species producing bioluminescence. Such studies are few and rare.

Book excerpt: Publications relevant to marine bioluminescence from 1979 through 1987 are annotated and cross-indexed by author, organism studied, geographic location, and key words. Sources of research funding are discussed, and the most prolific institutions and most popular sources for publication are identified. Six areas of particular interest--namely flash characteristics, stimulation techniques, geographic and temporal distribution and occurrence and correlation with environmental parameters, the luminous organism themselves, symbiosis, and circadian rhythms are identified and analyzed for significant progress, important research omissions, and trends. No significant trends are identified, although the suggestion of the possibility of a decrease in research effort in these areas over the decade is noted. The international nature of the research is considered ... Bioluminescence, Marine biology, Optical properties.
