The eunicemorph polychaetes from Antarctic and Subantractic seas are reviewed, and new data adding to the knowledge of the eunicemorphs from New Zealand, Australia, Chile, and Argentina have been included. The systematics of the order Eunicemorpha is discussed, and suggestions are made pertinent to the status and definition of some families. It is proposed to merge the Lysaretidae with the Lumbrineridae, and the Oenonidae with the Arabellidae, and to redefine the Iphitimidae as a family independent of the Dorvilleidae.

The Antarctic Ice Sheet has greatly affected global climate, sea level, ocean circulation, and southern hemisphere biota during Cenozoic times. Much of our understanding of the evolution of the ice sheet has been inferred from isotopic studies on distant deep-ocean sediments, because few Cenozoic rocks are exposed on the Antarctic continent. Yet, large differences occur between past ice volumes inferred from isotopic studies and those inferred from low-latitude sea-level variation. The massive quantities of glacially transported terrigenous sediments that lie beneath the Antarctic continental margin provide an additional, more direct record of the inferred ice sheet fluctuations. Volume 68 addresses the history of ice sheet fluctuations as recorded by geological and geophysical investigations of selected areas of the Antarctic continental margin. As described below, the volume gives data and results from on-going research by a major multinational project directed toward better understanding the impact of Antarctic Ice Sheet fluctuations on global sea levels and climates.

A systematic study was made of the calanoid copepod genus Euaugaptilus found in Isaacs-Kidd midwater trawl and Bongo plankton net samples taken in Antarctic and Subantarctic waters. A total of 303 adult copepods representing 14 species of Euaugaptilus were found, including five new species (E. hadrocephalus, E. perasetosus, E. aliquantus, E. brevirostratus, and E. austrinus) and seven new records (E. maxillaris, E. nodifrons, E. bullifer, E. gibbus, E. angustus, E. laticeps, and E. oblongus). Euaugaptilus antarcticus (Wolfenden) is restored from synonymy. All species are characterized with pertinent descriptions and illustrations. Keys are presented for identification of the species.

Of the volumes currently available in the Antarctic Research Series, this volume is the fourth dealing with the biology of the antarctic seas. These collected papers comprise the results of original investigations, 11 of which are concerned mainly with the identification and distribution of marine plants and animals. In the first of these papers Stewart Springer gives a systematic appraisal of the five species of elasmobranch Rajidae from Antarctica, of which one represents a new and unique species. Heretofore one of the peculiarities of the antarctic ichthyological fauna has been the absence of sharks. In this very significant contribution, the author establishes the most southerly record for any member of the elasmobranchs. The second paper, by Patricia Kott, amplifies our systematic knowledge of the tunicates of the South Atlantic, South Pacific, and Indian oceans. It extends her monograph published as volume 13 of the Research Series under the title of Antarctic Ascidiacea and is based on collections made in the Antarctic through 1967; two new species are included. Additions and corrections to volume 13 are appended to this paper. John C. Markham reports on several lower chordates of the genus Cephalodiscus and discusses the systematics and distribution of the five species known from the Antarctic. The Deep Freeze materials examined in the course of this study were obtained through the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office oceanographers from icebreakers assigned to task force 43 prior to and after the 1955–1959 International Geophysical Year and precede the National Science Foundation sponsored research now being conducted by the USNS Eltanin and the R/V Hero under the U.S. Antarctic Research Program.

Book excerpt: This book is the fourth in a series of 4 volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series about morphology, anatomy, reproduction, development, ecology, phylogeny and systematics of Annelida. It covers the most typical polychaetes, Phyllodocida, together with certain smaller taxa placed incertae sedis. This volume completes the polychaetous Annelida. Phyllodocida are often vagile, possess well-developed parapodia. Due to their broad and flat cirri these parapodia look like leaves in some taxa and leading to the name of the entire group. Many of its members are macrophagous and often predators. Accordingly most species possess elaborate sense structures such as sensory palps, antennae, eyes and nuchal organs. In certain species the eyes comprise thousands of photoreceptor cells and lenses most likely allowing forming true images. Phyllodocida typically possess an axial muscular pharynx called proboscis functioning as a kind of suction pipe allowing them to swallow and ingest their prey or other food. This pharynx may be armed with cuticular jaws and some species even possess venom glands. The probably most popular and important polychaete model organism, Platynereis dumerilii, belongs to this interesting group. Phyllodocida fall into two to three higher clades comprising about 25 families which represent more than one fourth of the polychaete diversity. One of these families, Syllidae, comprises about 700 valid species of mainly small size and may, therefore, represent one of the most complex and somehow difficult polychaete families on Earth.

A high amplitude magnetic anomaly occurs over the Butcher Ridge igneous complex in the Transantarctic Mountains. This sill-like body is approximately 10 km long where exposed. It ranges from basalt to rhyolite in composition and has been suggested as evidence of a large mafic intrusion at depth. A single NW-SE aeromagnetic profile flown across Butcher Ridge gave an 8-km-wide positive anomaly with maxima of about 700 and 1000 nT which are associated with topographic peaks that the aircraft cleared at about 300 and 600 m respectively. The observed amplitude of the Butcher Ridge anomaly is too great to be caused by a typical sill of Ferrar Dolerite, examples of which are widely exposed along the Transantarctic Mountains. Models that fit the observed data indicate magnetizations comparable to the Jurassic Dufek layered mafic intrusion in the Transantarctic Mountains near the Weddell Sea. Model calculations show that the upper, and most magnetic part of the inferred intrusion must be greater than about 2 km thick and that the entire intrusion is probably substantially thicker. We interpret the source of the Butcher Ridge magnetic anomaly to be a layered mafic intrusion, syntectonic with the Jurassic Transantarctic (failed) rift, marked by the Ferrar Dolerite. The magnetic evidence for a buried mafic body beneath the Butcher Ridge igneous complex is the first evidence of possible Jurassic cumulate rocks in the Transantarctic Mountains bordering the Ross Embayment-Byrd Subglacial Basin.
