Download or read book Biology of the Pile Perch Rhacochilus Vacca in Yaquina Bay Oregon written by Paul Gordon Wares and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth, reproduction, food habits, and parasites of pile perch were investigated in Yaquina Bay, Oregon between April 1966 and July 1967. The research disclosed that pile perch live at least 10 years. Males and females of given ages are close to the same size up to age IV, after which females are increasingly larger than males. The diet varies between seasons and localities. Pile perch are carnivorous feeders, obtaining food from the bottom or protruding surfaces in the littoral zone. Principal foods are barnacles, mussels, the bay clams, crabs, mud shrimp and tube dwelling amphipod. None of the pile perch examined was heavily parasitized. Infestations of gill copepods vary seasonally.

Download or read book Atlantic Salmon Salmo Salar written by Florence T. Wright and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North American stocks of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) have been declining. One measure being employed to reverse that trend is increased hatchery production. As with husbandry of other animals, intensive rearing is usually associated with higher than normal health risks. Research on diseases of Atlantic salmon can help prevent, reduce, or otherwise control mortality due to problem parasites, infections, and other diseases. For planning of research as well as for diagnostic work, health management, and husbandry, published information on diseases of the Atlantic salmon must be readily available. Inasmuch as the literature is widely scattered, the purpose of this work is to compile a bibliography from international sources on the diseases (detection, diagnosis, identification, and control) of Atlantic salmon. Most of the references are arranged alphabetically by author, either have been annotated by the staff of the Eastern Fish Disease Laboratory, or are abstracts by the author.

Book excerpt: Toxicity tables for the herbicides acrolein, dalapon, dichlobenil, diquat, and endothal list the test organisms, types of tests, experimental conditions, and test results. Each table is followed by a list of references. The materials provide a useful source of toxicity data on these herbicides to researchers, regulatory agencies, and manufacturers.

Download or read book Coastal Fishes of the Pacific Northwest written by Andy Lamb and published by Harbour Publishing Company. This book was released on 2010 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a marine biologist and illustrated in colour by a prizewinning underwater photographer, Coastal Fishes of the Pacific Northwest identifies each fish by its common name and is illustrated with full-colour photographs and labelled sketches. Special sections present catching tips for anglers and commercial fishermen; location hints for divers, beachcombers and pleasure boaters; and cooking ideas for seafood gourmets. The information included in these sections provides a brief but detailed description of each fish's habitat, physical characteristics and behaviour--everything that a fisherman or an amateur naturalist needs to know!

Download or read book Estuarine Ecology written by John W. Day, Jr. and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuaries are among the most biologically productive ecosystems on the planet--critical to the life cycles of fish, other aquatic animals, and the creatures which feed on them. Estuarine Ecology, Second Edition, covers the physical and chemical aspects of estuaries, the biology and ecology of key organisms, the flow of organic matter through estuaries, and human interactions, such as the environmental impact of fisheries on estuaries and the effects of global climate change on these important ecosystems. Authored by a team of world experts from the estuarine science community, this long-awaited, full-color edition includes new chapters covering phytoplankton, seagrasses, coastal marshes, mangroves, benthic algae, Integrated Coastal Zone Management techniques, and the effects of global climate change. It also features an entriely new section on estuarine ecosystem processes, trophic webs, ecosystem metabolism, and the interactions between estuaries and other ecosystems such as wetlands and marshes

Download or read book Habitat Structure written by S.S. Bell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We conceived the idea for this book after teaching a graduate seminar on 'Habitat Complexity' at The University of South Florida. Discussions during the seminar led us to conclude that similar goals were to be found in studies of the topic that spanned the breadth of ecological research. Yet, the exact meaning of 'habitat structure', and the way in which it was measured, seemed to differ widely among subdisciplines. Our own research, which involves several sorts of ecology, convinced us that the differences among subdisciplines were indeed real ones, and that they did inhibit communica tion. We decided that interchange of ideas among researchers working in marine ecology, plant-animal interactions, physiological ecology, and other more-or-less independent fields would be worthwhile, in that it might lead to useful generalizations about 'habitat structure'. To foster this interchange of ideas. we organized a symposium to attract researchers working with a wide variety of organisms living in many habitats, but united in their interest in the topic of 'habitat structure'. The symposium was held at The University of South Florida's Chinsegut Hill Conference Center, in May. 1988. We asked participants to think about 'habitat structure' in new ways; to synthesize important, but fragmented, information; and. perhaps. to consider ways of translating ideas across systems. The chapters contained in this book reflect the participants' attempts to do so. The book is divided into four parts, by major themes that we have found useful categorizations.
