Book A Handbook of Field Methods for Research on Rice Stem borers and Their Natural Enemies

Download or read book A Handbook of Field Methods for Research on Rice Stem borers and Their Natural Enemies written by T. Nishida and published by Blackwell Scientific Publications Limited. This book was released on 1970 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The population of many Asian countries are dependent on rice for their staple diet and therefore any insight into the ecology of rice stem-borers and their natural enemies would not only be of scientific interest, but also of considerable economic value. This handbook presents some of the methods that might prove useful in carrying out such research, and thus makes it possible to speed up the progress of research on the insects in question in sub-tropical and tropical rice-growing areas.

Book African Cereal Stem Borers

Download or read book African Cereal Stem Borers written by Andrew Polaszek and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assemblage of approximately twenty moth species belonging to the families Crambidae, Pyralidae and Noctuidae constitute the most important cereal pests in many parts of Africa. The caterpillars of these moths bore into the stems of maize, sorghum, millet and rice, often killing the plant, and are commonly known as stem or stalk borers. The cereals attacked are grown on small farms to feed the farmers and their families and are of great importance as the staple food for the population in most parts of Africa. Complex control measures, including the use of chemicals, are often inappropriate. This book provides the information necessary for pursuing integrated pest management of African cereal stem borers, in particular strategies using natural enemy components. The book begins by characterizing the economically important species by region and by their biology and host plants. The book then describes in detail the taxonomy and rearing techniques for the moths, their larvae and their natural enemies. It includes illustrated keys of species and lists of distributions and hosts, and it concludes with a summary of current control measures and those being investigated.

Book Biocontrol Potential and its Exploitation in Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Biocontrol Potential and its Exploitation in Sustainable Agriculture written by Rajeev K. Upadhyay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant based biotechnology has come to represent a means of mitigating the problems of global food security in the twenty-first century. Products and processes in agriculture are increasingly becoming linked to science and cutting edge technology, to enable the engineering of what are in effect, designer plants. One of the most successful , non-chemical approaches to pest management and disease control is biological control, which seeks a solution in terms of using living organisms to regulate the incidence of pests and pathogens, providing a natural control' while still maintaining the biological balance with the ecosystem. This volume, (the first of two), addresses the different types of biocontrol for different pests, namely, crop diseases, weeds and nematodes, and details the biology of both the pest and its enemies, which is vital for efficient use of biological control. The book has numerous contributors who are authorities in their fields, and would be an asset to those who have interest in sustainable agriculture and crop productivity.
