Book Water Quality of the Muddy Creek Basin

Download or read book Water Quality of the Muddy Creek Basin written by Christopher A. Ellison and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantifying the effects of watershed improvement efforts is critical to agencies responsible for protecting water resources of the semiarid western United States. A large complex water quality data set of the Muddy Creek basin was subjected to univariate and multivariate statistical techniques to investigate whether livestock grazing and channel/floodplain best-management practices (BMPs) improved the water quality of the watershed. Following BMP implementation, flow regime analyses indicated lower hydrograph peak flows and reduced percents of flow duration intervals in the lower watershed. Hierarchical cluster analysis grouped sampling sites in the upper basin into homogeneous clusters based on similarity of biological indices and isolated distinct areas of degraded water quality. Discriminant analysis provided important data reduction by rendering seven key parameters for the spatial variation and four parameters for the temporal variation in the watershed, affording over 80% correct assignations in the spatial and temporal analyses. Canonical correlation analysis identified strong relationships among water quality, biological, and physical parameters. These data demonstrated positive trends in water quality, biological, and physical variables in the upper and lower basin despite the onset of extreme drought midway through the study period. Naturally erosive conditions along with anthropogenic impacts elevate the importance of BMP implementation and a long-term monitoring program. Both are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of improvement efforts and to help resource managers develop practical watershed improvement management strategies so that optimum conditions in Muddy Creek basin can be achieved.

Book Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment

Download or read book Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment written by Stephanie Fraser and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biological, radiological, chemical and physical traits of water are known as water quality. It is a measure of the water condition related to the requirements of biotic species and to human need. The health of ecosystems, safety of human contact, and drinking water are the most common standards used to measure water quality. Water quality parameters can be categorized into human consumption, environmental water quality, and industrial and domestic use. The measurement of water quality includes the process of sample collection, chemical analysis, real-time monitoring and testing in response to natural disasters. Various environmental indicators such as physical, chemical and biological indicators are also observed and used for the monitoring of water quality. This book explores all the important aspects of water quality in the present day scenario. It elucidates new techniques and their applications in a multidisciplinary manner. It will prove to be immensely beneficial to students and researchers in this field.

Book The Freshwater Mussels of Ohio

Download or read book The Freshwater Mussels of Ohio written by G. Thomas Watters and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, a naturalist named Rafinesque stood on the banks of the Ohio River and began to describe the freshwater mussels he found there. Since that time, these animals have earned a place among the most imperiled animals in North America. Dozens of species have become extinct, and it is estimated that two-thirds of the remaining freshwater mussels face a similar fate. Yet, despite their importance, the mussels of Ohio remain a poorly documented and largely mysterious fauna. This book compiles existing research on Ohio's mussels, synthesizing works on genetics, biology, and systematics into one volume. Full-page color images depict shell variation, hinge detail, and beak sculpture. Full-page maps show the distribution of each species based upon the collections of numerous museums, with historical distributions dating from the 1800s. In addition to species accounts, the book has an introductory section that includes information on basic biology, human use, and conservation issues.--adapted from jacket.

Book How to Grow More Vegetables Ninth Edition

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it time to embrace the so-called “Anthropocene”—the age of human dominion—and to abandon tried-and-true conservation tools such as parks and wilderness areas? Is the future of Earth to be fully domesticated, an engineered global garden managed by technocrats to serve humanity? The schism between advocates of rewilding and those who accept and even celebrate a “post-wild” world is arguably the hottest intellectual battle in contemporary conservation. In Keeping the Wild, a group of prominent scientists, writers, and conservation activists responds to the Anthropocene-boosters who claim that wild nature is no more (or in any case not much worth caring about), that human-caused extinction is acceptable, and that “novel ecosystems” are an adequate replacement for natural landscapes. With rhetorical fists swinging, the book’s contributors argue that these “new environmentalists” embody the hubris of the managerial mindset and offer a conservation strategy that will fail to protect life in all its buzzing, blossoming diversity. With essays from Eileen Crist, David Ehrenfeld, Dave Foreman, Lisi Krall, Harvey Locke, Curt Meine, Kathleen Dean Moore, Michael Soulé, Terry Tempest Williams and other leading thinkers, Keeping the Wild provides an introduction to this important debate, a critique of the Anthropocene boosters’ attack on traditional conservation, and unapologetic advocacy for wild nature.
