Book Biological and Health Effects from Exposure to Power line Frequency Electromagnetic Fields

Download or read book Biological and Health Effects from Exposure to Power line Frequency Electromagnetic Fields written by Hiraku Takebe and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possible health effects of electro-magnetic (EMF) from high-voltage electric power lines have been discussed sine the 1970s. The concern was triggered by epidemilogical studies in the United States and Europe that suggested a slightly increased incidence of leukaemia's and brain tumours occured among those living and working near high-voltage power lines. Although studies can indicate an associate between factor and effect, the studies themselves cannot confirm a cause-effect relationship. Whether EMF is producing these ill effects must be confirmed by experimental studies.

Book Niehs Report on Health Effects from Exposure to Power Line Frequency Electric and Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Niehs Report on Health Effects from Exposure to Power Line Frequency Electric and Magnetic Fields written by Kenneth Olden and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1999-11 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the analysis and conclusions of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) regarding possible health effects from ELF-EMF (magnetic field) exposures. The NIEHS carried out a hazard evaluation of ELF-EMF exposure that examined both historical and novel scientific evidence on possible health and biological effects at a series of open, scientific meetings. The scientific evidence suggesting that ELF-EMF exposures pose any health risk is weak, and there is a lack of connection between the human data and the experimental data (animal and mechanistic).

Book Biological Effects of Power Frequency Electric and Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Biological Effects of Power Frequency Electric and Magnetic Fields written by Office of Technology Assessment United S and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2002-06 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report was prepared by the Office of Technology Assessment of the United States Congress to review the health effects of high-voltage transmission lines. For about two decades, there has been some concern about the health effects of electric and magnetic fields produced by transmission lines. Recent studies have heightened this concern. Health effects research is still preliminary and inconclusive, but a growing number of studies suggest that under certain circumstances even relatively weak electric and magnetic fields can produce biologic changes. This report discusses the present state of knowledge on the health effects of low-frequency electric and magnetic fields and describes current U. S. funding levels and research programs. Also, the report provides information on regulatory activity, including existing and proposed field exposure standards.

Book Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-02-18 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the electric and magnetic fields (EMF) to which people are routinely exposed cause health effects? This volume assesses the data and draws conclusions about the consequences of human exposure to EMF. The committee examines what is known about three kinds of health effects associated with EMF: cancer, primarily childhood leukemia; reproduction and development; and neurobiological effects. This book provides a detailed discussion of hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization for each. Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields also discusses the tools available to measure exposure, common types of exposures, and what is known about the effects of exposure. The committee looks at correlations between EMF exposure and carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, neurobehavioral effects, reproductive and developmental effects, effects on melatonin and other neurochemicals, and effects on bone healing and stimulated cell growth.

Book Dirty Electricity

Download or read book Dirty Electricity written by Samuel Milham MD MPH and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Thomas Edison began wiring New York City with a direct current electricity distribution system in the 1880s, he gave humankind the magic of electric light, heat, and power; in the process, though, he inadvertently opened a Pandoras Box of unimaginable illness and death. Dirty Electricity tells the story of Dr. Samuel Milham, the scientist who first alerted the world about the frightening link between occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields and human disease. Milham takes readers through his early years and education, following the twisting path that led to his discovery that most of the twentieth century diseases of civilization, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and suicide, are caused by electromagnetic field exposure. In the second edition, he explains how electrical exposure does its damage, and how electricity is causing our current epidemics of asthma, diabetes and obesity. Dr. Milham warns that because of the recent proliferation of radio frequency radiation from cell phones and towers, terrestrial antennas, Wi-Fi and Wi-max systems, broadband internet over power lines, and personal electronic equipment, we may be facing a looming epidemic of morbidity and mortality. In Dirty Electricity, he reveals the steps we must take, personally and as a society, to coexist with this marvelous but dangerous technology.

Book Establishing a Dialogue on Risks from Electromagnetic Fields

Download or read book Establishing a Dialogue on Risks from Electromagnetic Fields written by World Health Organization. Radiation and Environmental Health and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2002-12-31 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public concern over possible health effects from electromagnetic fields (EMF) has led to the preparation of this handbook. Potential risks of EMF exposure from facilities such as power lines or mobile phone base stations present a difficult set of challenges for decision-makers. The challenges include determining if there is a hazard from EMF exposure and what the potential health impact is. Responding to these challenges requires the involvement of individuals or organizations with the right set of competencies combining relevant scientific expertise strong communication skills and good judgement in the management and regulatory areas. This handbook is intended to support decision-makers faced with a combination of public controversy scientific uncertainty and the need to operate existing facilities and/or the requirement to site new facilities appropriately. Its goal is to improve the decision-making process by reducing misunderstandings and improving trust through better dialogue. The guide may assist the general public when interacting with government agencies that regulate environmental health and with companies whose facilities may be sources of concern. References and suggestions for further reading are included.
