Book An Annotated Catalog of the Type Material of Aphytis Hymenoptera Aphelinidae in the Entomology Research Museum University of California at Riverside

Download or read book An Annotated Catalog of the Type Material of Aphytis Hymenoptera Aphelinidae in the Entomology Research Museum University of California at Riverside written by Serguei V. Triapitsyn and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2008-11-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An annotated catalog of type material of the genus Aphytis Howard (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) in the collection of the Entomology Research Museum, University of California, Riverside, California, USA (UCRC) provides information on 75 valid species. Curation of the UCRC Aphytis slide collection involved remounting 7,390 specimens from Hoyer's medium into Canada balsam (a single specimen per each slide). This included 7,292 specimens that were remounted, labeled, and databased and 98 specimens that were remounted and labeled but not databased (the types of the South African species received on loan from the South African National Collection of Insects, Plant Protection Research Institute, Pretoria, South Africa). Among these are 309 primary type specimens (i.e., holotypes, syntypes, lectotypes, and neotypes) belonging to 51 nominal species, 2,473 secondary type specimens (i.e., paratypes, allotypes, and paralectotypes) of various nominal species, and 4,608 nontype specimens of many species of Aphytis from more than 50 different countries. Numerous nomenclatural and other mistakes (such as improper or coded labeling) in the treatment of the type specimens of the Aphytis species are corrected; several primary types are returned to the appropriate depositories, and many remounted secondary types are donated to other major taxonomic collections of Aphelinidae. Lectotypes are designated for A. africanus Quednau, A. coheni DeBach, A. cylindratus Compere, A. equatorialis Rosen and DeBach, A. fisheri DeBach, A. holoxanthus DeBach, A. immaculatus Compere, A. lepidosaphes Compere, A. lingnanensis Compere, A. melinus DeBach and A. taylori Quednau.

Book Evolutionary Strategies of Parasitic Insects and Mites

Download or read book Evolutionary Strategies of Parasitic Insects and Mites written by Peter Price and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures presented in a symposium entitled "Evolutionary strategies of parasitic insects and mites" at the national meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota, 2-5 December, 1974. The intent was to bring together biologists who have worked on arthropods that are either plant or animal parasites in order to foster consideration of general aspects of the parasitic way of life. There seems to be a deficiency of ecological and evolutionary concepts relating to parasitism, in contrast to the burgeoning literature on predation, and it appeared that an amalgamation of studies on plant and animal parasites might help development of some generalities. Since parasities are far more numerous than predators in the world fauna, or in any particular community, emphasis on their study is justified. I freely admit that para sitoids have been usefully regarded as predators by ecologists, and many concepts on predation have been derived from their study. Also, in whichever category one places the parasitoids, that is the one which contains the most species. However, from an evolu tionary point of view they show many characteristics that must be regarded as those of a parasite. Notably, they are small, highly specific to their host, highly coevolved with it, as a result many species can coexist, and their adaptive radiation has produced the majority of the species diversity seen on Earth today.

Book Classical Biological Control of Bemisia tabaci in the United States A Review of Interagency Research and Implementation

Download or read book Classical Biological Control of Bemisia tabaci in the United States A Review of Interagency Research and Implementation written by Juli Gould and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews interagency research and development of classical (importation) biological control of Bemisia tabaci (biotype B) conducted in the USA from 1992- 2002. The successful discovery, evaluation, release, and establishment of at least five exotic B. tabaci natural enemies in rapid response to the devastating infestations in the USA represents a landmark in interagency cooperation and coordination of multiple disciplines. The review covers all key aspects of the classical biocontrol program, beginning with foreign exploration and quarantine culture, through dev- opment of mass rearing methodology, laboratory and field evaluation for efficacy, to field releases, integration with other management approaches, and monitoring for establishment and potential non-target impacts. The importance of morphological and molecular taxonomy to the success of the program is also emphasized. The book’s contributors include 28 USDA, state department of agriculture, and univ- sity scientists who participated in various aspects of the project. Bemisia tabaci continues to be a pest of major concern in many parts of the world, especially since the recent spread of the Q biotype, so the publication of a review of the biological control program for the B biotype is especially timely. We anticipate that our review of the natural enemies that were evaluated and which have established in the USA will benefit researchers and IPM practitioners in other nations affected by B. tabaci.

Book Handbook of Biological Control

Download or read book Handbook of Biological Control written by T. W. Fisher and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-09-20 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years the use of chemical agents such as pesticides and herbicides has been effective in controlling the many varieties of pests that infest both agricultural crops and backyard gardens. However, these pests are gradually becoming resistant to these agents, because the agents themselves are acting as selective factors making the pests better and better able to resist and persist. As a result, the use of biological controlling agents is increasing. This book is a comprehensive and authoritative handbook of biological control.
