Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomining is the use of microorganisms in the recovery of metals from ores. During bioleaching, metals such as copper, nickel or zinc are oxidized through microbial action from the water-insoluble sulfide to the soluble sulfate forms. Although gold is inert to microbial action, microbes can also be used in gold recovery from certain types of ores because as they oxidize the ore, they open up its structure, thereby allowing a gold-solubilizing agent such as cyanide to penetrate the ore. The book describes several industrial bioleaching and biooxidation processes as well as the underlying theory and biology of the microbes involved.

Book Microbial Biosorption of Metals

Download or read book Microbial Biosorption of Metals written by Pavel Kotrba and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-13 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy metals always pose serious ecological risks when released into the environment due to their elemental non-degradable nature, regardless of their chemical form. This calls for the development of efficient and low-cost effluent treatment and metal recuperation technologies for contaminated waste water, not only because regulatory limits need to be met but also because the waste itself can be a resource for certain precious metals. Biosorption is a general property of living and dead biomass to rapidly bind and abiotically concentrate inorganic or organic compounds from even very diluted aqueous solutions. As a specific term, biosorption is a method that utilizes materials of biological origin – biosorbents formulated from non-living biomass - for the removal of target substances from aqueous solutions. Recent research on biosorption provides a solid understanding of the mechanism underlying microbial biosorption of heavy metals and related elements. This book gathers review articles analyzing current views on the mechanism and (bio)chemistry of biosorption, the performance of bacterial, fungal and algal biomass, and the practical aspects of biosorbent preparation and engineering. It also reviews the physico-chemical evaluations of biosorbents and modelling of the process as well as the importance of biosorption during heavy metal removal using living cells. It is a reference work for scientists, environmental safety engineers and R&D specialists who wish to further promote biosorption research and use the accumulated knowledge to develop and build industrial applications of biosorption in heavy metal separation technologies.

Book Biohydrometallurgy and the Environment Toward the Mining of the 21st Century Molecular biology biosorption bioremediation

Download or read book Biohydrometallurgy and the Environment Toward the Mining of the 21st Century Molecular biology biosorption bioremediation written by Ricardo Amils and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major theme of the International Biohydrometallurgy Symposium IBS-99 'Biohydrometallurgy and the Environment toward the mining of the 21st Century', held in El Escorial (Spain) from 20-23 June 1999, is biohydrometallurgy and the environment since it is predicted that in the coming century biotechnology will make its greatest contribution in this area. From the papers in these volumes it is clear that environmental issues are already of great interest to the biohydrometallurgical community. Although all the classical biohydrometallurgical topics - e.g. bioleaching, microbiology, molecular biology, biosorption, bioremediation - are addressed, the continued emphasis is on the environmentally friendly aspects of the biotechnologies used. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the field, biologists, hydrometallurgists, geologists, chemists, physicists and engineers should be interested in this collection of papers which discuss the future trends in biohydrometallurgy.

Book Biohydrometallurgy From the Single Cell to the Environment

Download or read book Biohydrometallurgy From the Single Cell to the Environment written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this collection of peer-reviewed articles is the role that micro-organisms play in the treatment of minerals, metals, coal, oil, waste materials; and also in related environmental issues. Nowadays, as well as developing new technologies for the production of raw materials and useful products, major efforts have to be directed at the remediation of former mining sites and at environmental protection tasks associated with the various kinds of mining. This book presents the latest scientific and technological advances made in this area, and offers an invaluable 'one-stop' opportunity for biotechnologists, industrialists and environmentalists to make themselves familiar with current challenges and future trends in the field. In particular, it will enable scientists and engineers, from the first to the third world, to study biohydrometallurgical applications and learn how to implement them within their own particular society. In addition to the 126 papers selected for the September 2007 symposium, a keynote speech opens each of the six sessions on bioleaching technology, environmental problems, bioremediation, interfacial processes, molecular and microbiology, and biosorption. The keynote talks describe the Wismut uranium mining rehabilitation project, recent advances in electron transfer between biofilms and metals, genomics for biomining, and biological removal of ions. Other topics include removing sulfur from oil shale, microbial leaching of metals from printed circuit boards, metabolism peculiarities in bacteria of genus Sulfobacillus, lead and gold removal by sugar beet pectin gels, and a novel fuel cell catalyst for clean energy production.

Download or read book Biosorption written by Jan Derco and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Municipal and industrial wastewaters contain a wide spectrum of pollutants. Their effective removal presents a challenge for water treatment technology. Biosorption of nutrients and pollutants has been used in sewage treatment since the discovery of the activated sludge process. It is a passive uptake process by which pollutants are adsorbed on the surface of cell walls and/or dissolved in structures of microorganism cells that are present in sludge. Sorbed pollutants remain in the sludge and can be potentially released back into the environment depending on their condition and the reversibility of the pollutant-sludge interaction. An overview of typical biosorption applications for the removal of nutrients, organic pollutants, and metals in wastewater treatment is provided in different areas of their use for the protection of aquatic ecosystems and human health. This book will be of interest to operators of wastewater treatment plants and sludge treatment and disposal facilities as well as to researchers and university students in the field of environmental engineering.

In the former chapters of this book, respected researchers in this field describe how the optimization of microorganisms, enzymes, absorbents, additives and injection procedures can help to realize excellent bioremediation. In the latter chapters, other researchers introduce bioremediation processes that have been performed in the field and novel bioremediation processes. Thus, the readers will be able to obtain new ideas about effective bioremediation as well as important information about recent advances in bioremediation.

Book Biosorption and Bioaccumulation in Practice

Download or read book Biosorption and Bioaccumulation in Practice written by Katarzyna Chojnacka and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work discusses two main environmental applications of biosorption and bioaccumulation processes. The first is environmental biomonitoring performed by living organisms. The property that is used here is that the level of a given contaminant in biological tissues is related to the concentration of this substance in the environment. This is expressed by the assessment of bioaccumulation factors. This book reports examples of the application of human hair and consumable tissues of animals, and various parts of plants (green parts as well as wood) in environmental pollution monitoring. Biosorption as well as bioaccumulation can find an application in removal of contaminants from aqueous solutions. Biosorption by different materials of plant (microalgal biomass, aquatic plants, plant leaves, straw, grass) and animal origin (eggshells, bones) can be applied in industrial wastewater treatment processes. Also, bioaccumulation by aquatic organisms: microalgae, macroalgae and aquatic plants in metal ions removal from effluents can be used to bind metal ions simultaneously with nutrients. An attempt to make the processes predictable is discussed here, including screening for good biosorbents/bioaccumulators, determining biosorption and bioaccumulation capacity as well as bioavailability as the function of the concentration of metals in the environment in which an organism is present, together with growth requirements, mathematical modelling, carrying out processes at different process conditions. This should constitute the basis for the assessment of standardized procedures, in the design of biosorption or bioaccumulation treatment plants and for environmental biomonitoring.
