Book Biography of Linus Torvalds

Download or read book Biography of Linus Torvalds written by Abdul Montaqim and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Linus Torvalds is considered in Europe, the United States, and beyond, to be one of the most important people of the past 100 years. Some people even call him a revolutionary hero. Why? Because Torvalds is the inventor and chief architect of Linux, a computer language that has gained worldwide acceptance and popularity. Linux forms the basis of a computer operating system in the same respect that DOS forms the basis of Microsoft Windows, or UNIX forms the basis of the Apple Mac operating system. Torvalds is also credited with other inventions such as the Git system for revision controlwhich he developed as a way to keep track of all the changes happening to Linux, (which has become way too massive a project for one person to manage). Git is essentially a file system for large software projects, according to Torvalds. MEET THE AUTHOR Abdul Montaqim is a journalist, based in London, and has been working in the media since 1989. Among the more well known titles he has written for are The Guardian newspaper, Time Out magazine and the International Business Times website. He has edited a number of local and community newspapers, magazines and websites, and has, over the course of his career, worked for some of the largest publishers in Europe, including Emap, LLP and Mirror Group Newspapers. Abdul has also worked outside of the United Kingdom, moving to Abu Dhabi for a year to work on the first national daily newspaper in United Arab Emirates, The National; and he has consulted for media companies in Bangladesh, where he was born. Abdul briefly worked for a New York-headquartered cable television channel called AsiaNet as a news editor, and realised that although he loves researching, writing and other "technical" parts of a journalist's job, he does not like presenting, preferring to be behind the camera or back in the studio. He also realised that, although reporting a story through the medium of television is obviously different from telling it through a newspaper or magazine, the heart and mind of every media company is researching and writing. In his spare time, Abdul likes to spend time with his family, cooking, eating, watching films, listening to music, reading and writing. When he goes out he likes to watch movies at the best cinemas, see live music performances, and eat at good restaurants. He also loves gardening, fishing and going for long walks. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Linus Benedict Torvalds was born on December 28, 1969, in Helsinki, Finland. His family was part of Finlands Swedish-speaking minority, which represents around 5.6 percent of Finlands 5.4 million population. Both his parentsAnna and Nils Torvaldsare journalists who were radical activists during their student days at the University of Helsinki in the 1960s. Nils, who was a communist in the early days, has since somewhat moderated his views; he now combines politics with journalism, and won election to Helsinki City Council for the term 2009-2012. Nilss father, Ole, was a poet who won literary awards for his work during the 1940s, and then later in the 1970s. The family is believed to have named their computer genius progeny, Linus, after the American Nobel prize-winning scientist and peace activist Linus Pauling. But Torvalds himself once said, I think I was named equally for Linus the Peanuts cartoon character, adding that this makes him half Nobel-prize-winning chemist and half blanket-carrying cartoon character. Its likely that this is yet more evidence of Torvaldss modesty and self-deprecating nature. Book excerpt: "Open source" began as the mantra of a small group of idealistic hackers and has blossomed into the all-important slogan for progressive business and computing. This fast-moving narrative starts at ground zero, with the dramatic incubation of open-source software by Linux and its enigmatic creator, Linus Torvalds. With firsthand accounts, it describes how a motley group of programmers managed to shake up the computing universe and cause a radical shift in thinking for the post-Microsoft era. A powerful and engaging tale of innovation versus big business, Rebel Code chronicles the race to create and perfect open-source software, and provides the ideal perch from which to explore the changes that cyberculture has engendered in our society. Based on over fifty interviews with open-source protagonists such as Torvalds and open source guru Richard Stallman, Rebel Code captures the voice and the drama behind one of the most significant business trends in recent memory.

Book Free as in Freedom Paperback

Download or read book Free as in Freedom Paperback written by Sam Williams and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free as in Freedom interweaves biographical snapshots of GNU project founder Richard Stallman with the political, social and economic history of the free software movement. It examines Stallman's unique personality and how that personality has been at turns a driving force and a drawback in terms of the movement's overall success. Free as in Freedom examines one man's 20-year attempt to codify and communicate the ethics of 1970s era "hacking" culture in such a way that later generations might easily share and build upon the knowledge of their computing forebears. The book documents Stallman's personal evolution from teenage misfit to prescient adult hacker to political leader and examines how that evolution has shaped the free software movement. Like Alan Greenspan in the financial sector, Richard Stallman has assumed the role of tribal elder within the hacking community, a community that bills itself as anarchic and averse to central leadership or authority. How did this paradox come about? Free as in Freedom provides an answer. It also looks at how the latest twists and turns in the software marketplace have diminished Stallman's leadership role in some areas while augmenting it in others. Finally, Free as in Freedom examines both Stallman and the free software movement from historical viewpoint. Will future generations see Stallman as a genius or crackpot? The answer to that question depends partly on which side of the free software debate the reader currently stands and partly upon the reader's own outlook for the future. 100 years from now, when terms such as "computer," "operating system" and perhaps even "software" itself seem hopelessly quaint, will Richard Stallman's particular vision of freedom still resonate, or will it have taken its place alongside other utopian concepts on the 'ash-heap of history?'

Book The Hacker Ethic

Download or read book The Hacker Ethic written by Pekka Himanen and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You may be a hacker and not even know it. Being a hacker has nothing to do with cyberterrorism, and it doesn’t even necessarily relate to the open-source movement. Being a hacker has more to do with your underlying assumptions about stress, time management, work, and play. It’s about harmonizing the rhythms of your creative work with the rhythms of the rest of your life so that they amplify each other. It is a fundamentally new work ethic that is revolutionizing the way business is being done around the world. Without hackers there would be no universal access to e-mail, no Internet, no World Wide Web, but the hacker ethic has spread far beyond the world of computers. It is a mind-set, a philosophy, based on the values of play, passion, sharing, and creativity, that has the potential to enhance every individual’s and company’s productivity and competitiveness. Now there is a greater need than ever for entrepreneurial versatility of the sort that has made hackers the most important innovators of our day. Pekka Himanen shows how we all can make use of this ongoing transformation in the way we approach our working lives.

Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide an introduction to, and an overview of, the computer industry - or the "Computer Age" - as well as the key people who created the computerised world we live in... without too many technical details. The idea is to offer a snapshot of the industry at this point in time and find out how it got where it is today, highlighting its most notable inventions and innovations and the pioneering people who are responsible for them.Extract: The original human computers used tools to help them calculate. The most well known calculating tool from antiquity is the abacus, which was usually made from wood and featured a frame containing sticks along which beads could be moved. It is believed that the abacus was invented some time between 2700-2300 BC, in Sumeria, and its forerunner was probably a system whereby stones or beads were moved along grooves in the sand or ground, or tablets of wood, stone or metal.

Book Principles of Computer System Design

Download or read book Principles of Computer System Design written by Jerome H. Saltzer and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2009-05-21 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Computer System Design is the first textbook to take a principles-based approach to the computer system design. It identifies, examines, and illustrates fundamental concepts in computer system design that are common across operating systems, networks, database systems, distributed systems, programming languages, software engineering, security, fault tolerance, and architecture. Through carefully analyzed case studies from each of these disciplines, it demonstrates how to apply these concepts to tackle practical system design problems. To support the focus on design, the text identifies and explains abstractions that have proven successful in practice such as remote procedure call, client/service organization, file systems, data integrity, consistency, and authenticated messages. Most computer systems are built using a handful of such abstractions. The text describes how these abstractions are implemented, demonstrates how they are used in different systems, and prepares the reader to apply them in future designs. The book is recommended for junior and senior undergraduate students in Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, Distributed Operating Systems and/or Computer Systems Design courses; and professional computer systems designers. Concepts of computer system design guided by fundamental principles Cross-cutting approach that identifies abstractions common to networking, operating systems, transaction systems, distributed systems, architecture, and software engineering Case studies that make the abstractions real: naming (DNS and the URL); file systems (the UNIX file system); clients and services (NFS); virtualization (virtual machines); scheduling (disk arms); security (TLS) Numerous pseudocode fragments that provide concrete examples of abstract concepts Extensive support. The authors and MIT OpenCourseWare provide on-line, free of charge, open educational resources, including additional chapters, course syllabi, board layouts and slides, lecture videos, and an archive of lecture schedules, class assignments, and design projects
