This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Some of the Early Settlers of the City of Chicago In the conduct of such an institution, through times such as these, there were two things which it were impossible to secure together. One was the safety of the institution, and the other, the good-will of all the community. Everybody was in a con dition of suffering, and wanted money, with an intensity that could take no denial; and the very urgency of the want, point ed, in no inconsiderable number of cases, to the very reason which made it unsafe to accommodate them. The Cashier of a bank must of necessity look to the safety of his trust. If he is faithful to that, no matter whether no is an easy word to him or not; he is forced to make the two letters which com pose it, current in his institution. N 0, is not a popular word, with men who, wish to borrow money, especially if they wish to borrow it very much; as those then did, who wanted to borrow it at all. Mr. Brown's peculiar qualification already mentioned perhaps conduced more to the safety of his trust, than to his popularity for the time being. But integrity and decision vindicate themselves sooner or later, and he has lost little in the long run. Indeed the men who supposed them selves to suffer from lack of a decision in their favor, would now often choose him as the very man to take charge of a trust of their own, had they one, requiring sagacity and decision united with integrity in its management. Book The University of Chicago Biographical Sketches Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The University of Chicago Biographical Sketches Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Wakefield Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Chicago Biographical Sketches, Vol. 1 This was the genesis Of the sketches appearing in this volume. At the outset I expected to prepare a series of brief formal statements of the outstanding facts in each life which might be deposited in the Uni versity archives and furnish material for the future historian. NO sooner, however, had I begun my work than I found the story of each life so full Of interest, that, without intention on my part, it assumed the proportions the reader finds in these pages. The editor Of the University Record, Professor David A. Robertson, learning what I was doing, sought the first sketch, which happened to be that Of William B. Ogden, for publication. President Judson encouraged me to go on as I had begun. As each sketch was prepared it appeared in the Record, and the President and editor came to count on one or more of the sketches for each num ber. As they multiplied President Judson expressed his wish that they should be brought together in a volume. It is due to myself to say that the publication of this book is not owing to any suggestion or even wish Of my own. The President's wish has been repeated, quite independently Of him, by many too partial friends, and the foolish vanity of an author has made it difficult for me to Offer Objection. Book Biographical Sketches of Some of the Early Settlers of the City of Chicago Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Biographical Sketches of Some of the Early Settlers of the City of Chicago Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Robert W. Patterson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Some of the Early Settlers of the City of Chicago, Vol. 1 The following pages are intended merely as sketches of character - not labored biographies. In the inception, the object was simply to prepare a few newspaper articles, to be read and thrown aside, as other ephemeral literature. But partial, very likely over-partial, friends, who saw the earlier manuscripts, believed them worthy of a better fate believed them (how could I question the verdict?) to be recollections of the fast-growing dim past, that should be garnered, and would be cordially received and valued by the olden-time citizens of Chicago. This being the case, and my friend of auld lang syne Mr. Robert Fergus, having determined to give them the dignity of a book, no one can regret more sincerely than the writer that greater care was not taken in the preparation - that they were not given more at length - that more of birth and family had not been gathered. That would have made them interest ing - to their descendants. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Book of Chicagoans

Download or read book The Book of Chicagoans written by John W. Leonard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Chicagoans: A Biographical Dictionary of Leading Living Men of the City of Chicago The Book of Chicagoans, after a long and patient campaign of research and inquiry, is now presented with confidence that every promise and prediction made for it has been fulfilled. The volume contains a vastly larger collection of personal sketches of Chicago people than has ever before been gathered together, and not only in numbers, but also in the quality of the people whose life-statistics are presented, the book may fairly claim precedence. It is the best showing ever made of biographical data concerning those living men who best represent the reputable efforts and creditable activities of the City of Chicago. The Book of Chicagoans is modeled on the plan of "Who's Who in America," a now world-famous publication, recognized as the highest authority on personal data pertaining to nationally notable living Americans. It is edited and published by the same persons who have placed "Who's Who in America" in the foremost position among American works of reference. It follows the same lines of carefulness and discrimination, but is entirely confined to pertinent data about the living men of Chicago and vicinity who are entitled to be included in a work of this character. Names which should have been included will be missed, but in practically all such cases the omission is not in the least due to the lack of effort on the part of those having the preparation of the book in hand. By mailed request or personal solicitation all who were regarded as eligible were solicited, in a respectful way, to furnish personal data. The great majority of those so requested furnished the data freely and in a courteous manner, and to them thanks are hereby extended. A few gave information with evident reluctance and others showed complete indifference and let the requests for data go unnoticed. Some names which frequently appear in the newspapers are conspicuous by their absence for the reason that the Book of Chicagoans has endeavored only to include men of good standing and reputable vocation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biographical History, With Portraits, of Prominent Men of the Great West: Illustrations in Steel and Marginals He was constantly planning, however, for a wider field of operations, and with that foresight which has been a marked characteristic of his life, selected Chicago as the place which would become the metropolis of the then undeveloped and thither he moved in 1850. At that time Lake street was Chicago's prin cipal thoroughfare, and there, upon his arrival, Mr. Palmer opened a large retail dry goods store, investing his entire capital. He began at first on a moderate scale. His trade rapidly and stead ily increased until, after an experience of thir teen years, the name of Potter Palmer became familiar in' every trading community in the fest, and his store the leading retail dry goods store of Chicago. Enlarging his facilities to meet the demand of his increasing trade, he added to his business a wholesale department, which rapidly grew to great magnitude under his skilled man agement. Mr. Palmer had a true appreciation of the commercial facilities of Chicago, and did not hesitate to incur the risk demanded. The rise in goods soon after the war found him with a full stock on hand. Here again his far-seeing judg nent enabled him to take at the ebb the tide that led to greater fortune, and from the' begin ning of the war he continued to carly an immense amount of goods, both here and in New York. The house, thus directed by his practical admin istrative ability and' keen mercantile foresight, be came the largest of its kind in the Northwest, the policy guiding it being far broader and more liberal than any previously pursued.
