Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Distinguished American Naval Heroes in the War of the Revolution, Between the American Republic and the Kingdom of Great Britain: Comprising Sketches of Com; Nicholas Biddle, Com; John Paul Jones, Com; Edward Preble, and Com; Alexander Murray; With Incidental Allusions to Other Distinguished Characters The following volume was commenced in consequence of perusing the well known Letter of the venerable Statesman, John Adams, to the well known Editor of the Baltimore Weekly Register, in which this unrivalled American Patriot says to that indefatigable American Journalist, "It is greatly to be desired that young gentlemen of letters in all the states, especially in the thirteen original States, would undertake the laborious, but certainly interesting and amusing task, of searching and collecting all the records, pamphlets, newspapers, and even hand-bills, which in any way contributed to change the temper and views of the people and compose them into an independent nation." Without aspiring to the proud eminence of a "young gentleman of letters," I undertook the "laborious, but certainly interesting and amusing task of searching and collecting all the records, pamphlets, newspapers, and even hand-bills" that came within the scope of my researches. By the goodness of my parents, a very considerable number of Revolutionary pamphlets, from the scattered library of Maj. Gen. Israel Putnam came into my hands. By researches, which would remind a lover of Shakspeare of one o(his characters, who sought "for two kernels of wheat, in two bushels of chaff," I gathered a file of newspapers, embracing the whole period of the War of the American Revolution; and containing a vast variety of facts relating to Naval Heroes, not to be found in voluminous histories of that wonderful war. Download or read book John Paul Jones Memoir of the American Revolution written by John Paul Jones and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolutionary career of John Paul Jones, which is the subject of this memoir, needs no elaboration here. His voyages, first on the Alfred under Capt. Dudley Saltonstall, and later at the helm of the sloops Providence, Ranger and Ariel, the old East Indiaman Duras (renamed the Bonhomme Richard), and the American-built frigate Alliance are thoroughly recounted here. What is generally not known, however, is the commodore's post-revolutionary war career. Having made numerous inveterate enemies during the course of the war, both in and out of Congress, Jones had little chance of gaining flag rank in the American navy. Realizing this, he decided in the spring of 1788 to pursue fame in other waters, first in the service of Louis XVI of France and later under Catherine the Great of Russia. France, unfortunately, was in no position to expand its naval staff, but Catherine, who was in need of good officers to fight in the second Russo-Turkish war, offered him an admiral's commission in the Russian navy, and on May 26, 1788, Rear Admiral Jones raised his flag on the Black Sea. Anyone familiar with the life of John Paul Jones, one of America's most popular naval heroes, would agree that in fighting spirit the commodore was perhaps equal to any officer in the history of the United States Navy. Unquestionably, he was deserving of the belated tribute paid to him by President Theodore Roosevelt on April 24, 1906, at the formal reception at Annapolis of the body of Capt. Paul Jones, as the hero was known at the height of his career. President Roosevelt admonished an audience of naval officers and cadets, statesmen and visiting dignitaries: "Every officer in our Navy should know by heart the deeds of John Paul Jones. Every officer in our Navy should feel in each fiber of his being an eager desire to emulate the energy, the professional capacity, the indomitable determination and dauntless scorn of death which marked John Paul Jones above all his fellows."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upshur County, West Virginia was created in 1851 from Randolph, Barbour, and Lewis counties. Upshur's early history and the lives of its more prominent pioneers and nineteenth-century Native Sons are ably captured in this tripartite volume. Part I, a condensed history of the state prepared by Hu Maxwell, ranges over everything from the first explorations of the Blue Ridge, the French and Indian War, and the Revolution to West Virginia geography and geology, formation of the state, and the Civil War in West Virginia. In Part II, Mr. Cutright lays out the history of the county, with emphasis on the Indian Wars, religious life, geography, formation of the county and its political and governmental institutions, Upshur County and Upshur countians in the Civil War, as well as a whole host of miscellaneous topics, such as turnpike and railroad construction, newspapers, financial institutions, the birds of Upshur County, and much more. In the final third of the volume we find an alphabetically arranged series of over 600 biographical/genealogical sketches of Upshur countians (some of them illustrated), which range from several paragraphs to several pages in length. In the majority of cases the subjects, who were mostly born around mid-century, are identified by their year of birth, the name of one or more parents, and the names of their spouse(s) and children. In addition, we learn something of each subject's career, military service (if any), and his/her movements to and from Upshur County. In short, given the book's 607 densely packed pages of historical and genealogical detail, this is the starting point for Upshur County research.
