Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the US South, wood-based bioenergy schemes are being promoted and implemented through a powerful vision merging social, environmental, and economic benefits for rural, forest-dependent communities. While this dominant narrative has led to heavy investment in experimental technologies and rural development, many complexities and complications have emerged during implementation. Forests as Fuel draws on extensive multi-sited ethnography to ground the story of wood-based bioenergy in the biophysical, economic, political, social, and cultural landscape of this region. This book contextualizes energy issues within the history and potential futures of the region’s forested landscapes, highlighting the impacts of varying perceptions of climate change and complex racial dynamics. Eschewing simple answers, the authors illuminate the points of friction that occur as competing visions of bioenergy development confront each other to variously support, reshape, contest, or reject bioenergy development. Building on recent conceptual advances in studies of sociotechnical imaginaries, environmental history, and energy justice, the authors present a careful and nuanced analysis that can provide guidance for promoting meaningful participation of local community members in renewable energy policy and production while recognizing the complex interplay of factors affecting its implementation in local places.

Book Bioenergy from Wood

Download or read book Bioenergy from Wood written by Thomas Seifert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for scientists and practitioners interested in deepening their knowledge of the sustainable production of bioenergy from wood in tropical and sub-tropical countries. Utilising the value chain concept, this book outlines the necessary aspects for managing sustainable bioenergy production. A wide range of topics is covered including biomass localization, modelling and upscaling, production management in woodlands and plantations, and transport and logistics. Biomass quality and conversion pathways are examined in order to match the conversion technology with the available biomass. A section is dedicated to issues surrounding sustainability. The issues, covered in a life-cycle assessment of the bioenergy system, include socio-economic challenges, local effects on water, biodiversity, nutrient-sustainability and global impacts. Through this holistic approach and supporting examples from tropical and sub-tropical countries, the reader is guided in designing and implementing a value chain as the main management instrument for sustainable wood.

Book Economics of Forest Biomass Based Bioenergy in the Southern United States

Download or read book Economics of Forest Biomass Based Bioenergy in the Southern United States written by Andres Ignacio Susaeta Larrain and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On average, bioenergy production increased the forestland value around 11.6% compared to pulpwood production. As bioenergy markets evolve, it is expected that profitability of forestlands will increase. Public perception study indicates that people tend to pay for biofuels to realize environmental and social benefits. Although people show heterogeneous preferences in terms of environmental attributes, their willingness to pay is greater when higher reduction of CO2 and improvements of biodiversity are offered. For an ethanol blend of 10% (E10), people were willing to pay an extra $0.56 gallon1, $0.58 gallon1, and $0.50 gallon−1 in Arkansas, Florida and Virginia, respectively. For an ethanol blend of 85% (E85), the extra willingness to pay was $0.82 gallon−1, $1.17 gallon−1, and $1.06 gallon−1 for the same states. Finally, an increase in the demand for biomass for bioenergy causes an increase in the price of biomass for bioenergy, pulpwood and sawtimber and the quantity of pulpwood and sawtimber are shown to be decreased. Price of biomass for bioenergy, pulpwood and sawtimber increased 52%, 104% and 6.5%, respectively. Quantity of pulpwood and sawtimber decreased 20% and 11%, respectively. On the other hand, forest landowners and bioenergy sectors would benefit from bioenergy production while pulp and sawmill sectors are shown to contract with an increase in the demand for biomass for bioenergy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioenergy from Sustainable Forestry synthesizes information needed to design or implement sustainable forest management systems for production of biomass for energy in conjunction with other forest products. It is organized around the criteria for sustainable forest management: productivity, environment, social issues, economics, and legal and institutional framework. More than 25 international experts from 10 countries have brought together available ecological, physical, operational, social and economic information and identified gaps in knowledge related to biomass production and harvesting systems. This is the first time that such comprehensive information has been brought together under one cover, using an integrated, holistic approach. Guiding principles and state of the art knowledge are emphasized. The book will enable forest resource managers and planners to evaluate the ability of specific forest regions to sustainably meet bioenergy production demands.

Book Biomass Burning in South and Southeast Asia Two Volume Set

Download or read book Biomass Burning in South and Southeast Asia Two Volume Set written by Krishna Prasad Vadrevu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing intensity and frequency of natural disasters all around the world has caused severe socioeconomic impacts, especially in South and Southeast Asia. This region is particularly susceptible to vegetation fires, leading to biomass burning pollution with impacts on other countries through trans-boundary air pollution. Despite the growing body of information on biomass pollutants worldwide, only a modest amount of data from these regions are available. With fires and biomass burning identified as a vital issue in South/Southeast Asia, this two-volume set was created to meet community research and application needs. To better serve the atmospheric, environmental, and remote sensing communities, and to address air quality, climate, and the human health impacts of greenhouse gases and aerosols from biomass burning, this set brings together the collective achievements of experts in these regions and the state-of-the-art technologies and spatial analyses to model and monitor biomass burning events and their impacts. This first volume covers various topics on fire, biomass burning, mapping and monitoring while the second volume highlights the impact of biomass burning on the biosphere and reflects extensive research by interdisciplinary teams of experts. This set will serve as a valuable resource for remote sensing scientist, geographers, ecologists, atmospheric scientists, environmental scientists, and all who wish to advance their knowledge on fires, biomass burning, and biomass burning pollution in South/Southeast Asia Specific Features: Unique in its discussion of the sources and the causes of biomass burning and atmospheric research in South and Southeast Asia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the United States, a wide variety of efforts are underway to develop economically sound and environmentally sustainable bioenergy production systems. Several Federal policies, such as the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003, support the establishment of biomass-to-energy systems. Scientists in government and nongovernmental agencies are taking the initiative to improve biomass production, processing, and conversion. Entrepreneurs are developing and marketing biobased products for use as bioenergy. Consumers are creating a demand for alternative forms of fuel and power generation. Yet, to advance biomass-based production, there is still a need to educate concerned citizens, community leaders, and those who can supply and use biomass fuels. Potential uses, sources of raw material, and requirements to convert from fossil fuels to biofuels are all topics of concern.
