Distributional records are presented mostly from New Brunswick, Ontario and Yukon Territory. For New Brunswick, 186 new provincial records, 11 new records for Canada, and 10 new records of adventive species are provided. For Ontario, 47 new provincial records and 25 new Canadian records are provided, and 5 species are described as new to science. For Yukon Territory, 20 new territorial records and 1 new Canadian record are provided and 9 species are described as new to science. A total of 253 new provincial/territorial records, 37 new Canadian records, and 14 species new to science are treated in this volume. Lectotypes are designated for several species and seven synonyms are proposed. All new species and many species representing new distributional records are illustrated by color habitus images and black and white images of the genital structures. This volume on Canadian rove beetle biodiversity contributes new taxonomic research and important baseline data, and significantly updates the known staphylinid faunas of New Brunswick, Ontario, Yukon Territory, and Canada.

Documenting the changing climate/environment of the north requires a structured knowledge of indicator taxa that reflect the effects of climate changes.Aleocharine beetles are a dominant group of forest insects, which are being used in many projects as indicators of environmental change. Many species are forest specialists restricted to certain microhabitats, some are generalists and others are open habitat specialists. They represent many ecological niches and, as such, are good indicators for many other species as well. The majority of Canadian aleocharine beetle species (about 600 spp.) has been studied and published by Jan Klimaszewski et al. (2018, 2020), mainly from southern, central, and western Canada, while the northern taxa remain poorly known and documented. The aim of the present book is to summarize the knowledge on this insect group in the Arctic and Subarctic North America and to provide a diagnostic and ecological tool for scientists studying and monitoring insects in northern Canada and Alaska. The book includes a review of the literature, information on 238 species and their habitats, taxonomic review, images, and identification tools.

The second contribution provides a review of the large Euro-Mediterranean genus Glomeris in North Africa, with 11 nominate species currently known from the coastal regions of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Lybia. The nine precursor papers in this issue include three new combinations and descriptions of 18 new species and one new variety of ferns and flowering plants, bringing the total number of new species described in conjunction with these projects to 62. Most of these new species are extremely rare and localized, and they have been assigned preliminary IUCN Red List ratings of Endangered or Critically Endangered. This clearly demonstrates that field work and biological inventories are essential to enhance our knowledge of insular biodiversity and provide critical information for conservation of organisms and habitats. The Vascular Flora of the Marquesas Islands is a collaborative project between the National Tropical Botanical Garden, Smithsonian Institution, and D?l?gation ? la Recherche (French Polynesia) under the direction of David H. Scarabs have diversified into most habitats, and they are fungivores, herbivores, necrophages, coprophages, saprophages, and carnivores. Some scarabs exhibit various levels of parental care and sociality. Some are myrmecophilous or termitophilous. Many possess extravagant horns, others are able to roll into a compact ball, and still others are highly armored for inquiline life. Some are important agricultural pests that may destroy crops, while others are used in the biological control of dung and dung flies. Scarabaeoids are popular beetles due to their large size, bright colors, and interesting natural histories. Because of the popularity of the group, there exists an erroneous impression that the superfamily is taxonomically well known. However, even with a lengthy history of study, the group is in real need of continuing research. The papers in this volume cover a wide array of research topics on Scarabaeoidea, including evolutionary relationships, character trait evolution, species concepts, descriptions of new taxa, keys for identification, nomenclature, historical biogeography, methods, and basic life history information. These papers are a valuable contribution to our knowledge of scarabaeoids, and they will provide a foundation for future research.

Book excerpt: The flightless Mancallinae (Aves, Pan-Alcidae) from the Pacific Ocean are represented by one of the richest fossil records among Charadriiformes. A detailed review of previously published and previously undescribed fossils referred to Mancallinae resulted in taxonomic revision of the clade and the identification of three new species from the Miocene and Pliocene of California, USA. This monograph includes descriptions of new Mancallinae species and provides the first species-level phylogenetic hypothesis of Mancallinae relationships. Phylogenetic hypotheses were generated through the combined analysis of molecular sequence data and newly identified morphological character data for extant and extinct charadriiforms. The results of the combined phylogenetic analysis places hypotheses regarding the ethology and morphological convergence of Mancallinae to other flightless wing-propelled divers in phylogenetic context and facilitates comparisons between alcid paleodiversity and paleoclimatic events that have been hypothesized as drivers of alcid evolution.
