Book excerpt: Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) play a key role to develop Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) aiming to achieve road safety and to guaranty needs of drivers and passengers, in addition to improve the transportation productivity. One of the most important challenges of this kind of networks is the data routing between VANET nodes which should be routed with high level of Quality of Service (QoS) to ensure receiving messages in the time. Then, the driver can take the appropriate decision to improve the road safety. In the literature, there are several routing protocols for VANETs which are more or less reliable to reach safety requirements. In this book, we start by describing all VANET basic concepts such as VANET definition, VANET versus Mobile ad-Hoc Network (MANET), architectures, routing definition and steps, Quality of Service (QoS) for VANET Routing, Metrics of evaluation, Experimentation, and simulation of VANETs, mobility patterns of VANET etc. Moreover, different routing protocols for routing in VANETs will be described. We propose two main categories to be presented: classical routing and bio-inspired routing. Concerning classical VANET, main principles and all phases will be overviewed, as well as, their two sub-categories which are topological and geographical protocols. After that, we propose a new category called bio-inspired routing which is inspired by natural phenomenon such as Ant colony, Bee life, Genetic operators etc. We present also, some referential protocols as example of each category. In this book, we focus on the idea of how to apply bio-inspired principle into VANET routing to improve road safety, and to ensure QoS of vehicular applications.

Book excerpt: In recent years, a lot of work has been done in an effort to incorporate Swarm Intelligence (SI) techniques in building an adaptive routing protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Since centralized approach for routing in MANETs generally lacks in scalability and fault-tolerance, SI techniques provide a natural solution through a distributed approach for the adaptive routing for MANETs. In SI techniques, the captivating features of insects or mammals are correlated with the real world problems to find solutions. Recently, several applications of bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms in telecommunications and computer networks have achieved remarkable success. The main aims/objectives of this book, "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Bio-Inspired Quality of Service Aware Routing Protocols", are twofold; firstly it clearly distinguishes between principles of traditional routing protocols and SI based routing protocols, while explaining in detail the analogy between MANETs and SI principles. Secondly, it presents the readers with important Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and explains how SI based routing protocols achieves QoS demands of the applications. This book also gives quantitative and qualitative analysis of some of the SI based routing protocols for MANETs.

Book excerpt: Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) can provide scalable and cost-effective solutions for applications such as traffic safety, dynamic route planning, and context-aware advertisement using short-range wireless communication. To function properly, these applications require efficient routing protocols. However, existing mobile ad hoc network routing and forwarding approaches have limited performance in VANETs. This dissertation shows that routing protocols which account for VANET-specific characteristics in their designs, such as high density and constrained mobility, can provide good performance for a large spectrum of applications. This work proposes a novel class of routing protocols as well as three forwarding optimizations for VANETs. The Road-Based using Vehicular Traffic (RBVT) routing is a novel class of routing protocols for VANETs. RBVT protocols leverage real-time vehicular traffic information to create stable road-based paths consisting of successions of road intersections that have, with high probability, network connectivity among them. Evaluations of RBVT protocols working in conjunction with geographical forwarding show delivery rate increases as much as 40% and delay decreases as much as 85% when compared with existing protocols. Three optimizations are proposed to increase forwarding performance. First, one- hop geographical forwarding is improved using a distributed receiver-based election of next hops, which leads to as much as 3 times higher delivery rates in highly congested networks. Second, theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the delay in highly congested networks can be reduced by half by switching from traditional FIFO with Taildrop queuing to LIFO with Frontdrop queuing. Third, nodes can determine suitable times to transmit data across RBVT paths or proactively replace routes before they break using analytical models that accurately predict the expected road-based path durations in VANETs.

Book excerpt: Recent research studies have recognized the applicability of carry and forward based routing in a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), where packets are stored and carried by a moving vehicle until another vehicle comes into its transmission range and the packets are transmitted via wireless channel. This thesis explores several research topics concerning the use of a carry and forward approach in a vehicular network. In the first part of our research, we develop an end-to-end delay model in a unidirectional highway using vehicle-to-vehicle connectivity parameters that include the carry and forward approach which extends an existing catch-up time delay model for two disconnected vehicle clusters to multiple disconnected clusters on a unidirectional highway. Consequently, two distributions are newly derived to represent the number of clusters on a highway using a vehicular traffic model. The analytical results obtained from the end-to-end distribution model are then validated through simulation results. In the second part of our research, we present a fuzzy logic based beaconing system where beacon intervals are adjusted based on packet carried time, number of single-hop neighbors, and vehicles speed. It is common for vehicles in a VANET to exchange information by broadcasting beacon messages periodically. This information is required not only for routing protocols when making routing decisions, but also for safety applications. Choosing a suitable interval for broadcasting beacon messages has been considered a communication challenge since there will be a trade-off between information accuracy and channel usage. Therefore, an adaptive beaconing approach is needed so that vehicles can regulate their beacon rate based on traffic condition. Through simulation in a grid model and a realistic scenario, we are able to show that the fuzzy logic based beaconing system is not only able to reduce routing overhead and packet collision, but also decrease the average end-to-end delay and increase the delivery rate as well. The last issue of this thesis focuses on developing a proactive multi-copy routing protocol with carry and forward mechanism that is able to deliver packets from a source vehicle to a destination vehicle at a small delivery delay. It has been ascertained by the majority of researches in VANET that the carry and forward procedure can significantly affect an end-to-end delivery delay. Our approach is to replicate data packets and distribute them to different relays. The proposed protocol creates enough diversity to reach the destination vehicle with a small end-to-end delivery delay while keeping low routing overhead by routing multiple copies independently. The simulation results in an urban grid model show that the proposed multi-copy forwarding protocol is able to deliver packets at small delivery delay compared to a single-copy forwarding algorithm without having to rely on real time traffic data or flooding mechanism.

One of the two main goals of this thesis was to develop a freely available VANET simulator and to evaluate popular mobile ad-hoc network routing protocols in several VANET scenarios. The VANET simulator consisted of a network simulator, a traffic (mobility simulator) and used a client-server application to keep the two simulators in sync. The VANET simulator also models buildings in order to create a more realistic wireless network environment. The second main goal of this thesis was to provide an evaluation of the routing protocols that are commonly used in mobile ad-hoc networks, which will apply to VANETs. Ad-Hoc Distance Vector routing (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and Dynamic MANET On-demand (DYMO) were initially simulated in a city, country, and highway environment in order to provide an overall evaluation."--Abstract.

The priority research field for Car Manufacturers as well as Governmental Transportation Authorities is the safe navigation. Applications that may be able to inform the neighbouring vehicles about weather, road condition, traffic jams, and accidents can save many lives and also optimize the resources for emergency, improve the respond time to emergency among others important applications. Some of these applications will require security information services to promote its use. One of the most important security information services for the application usability in VANETs will be the privacy, more explicitly 'Anonymity' in the sense if someone wants to collaborate notifying emergencies, traffic state, suspicious driver behaviour, necessarily he/she will require to send for instance his/her estimated position but without being tracked. Base in this fact, this Final Master Project tests the suitability of anonymity web mechanism called Crowds over routing protocols in vehicular Ad Hoc Networks. A Crowds variant that does not consider self-forwarding specially adapted for VANETs is implemented over AODV (a reactive topology routing protocol) and a GPSR variant (a well-known position-located routing protocol) that includes the use of a buffer and building aware condition to select its forwarding nodes. Simulation tests were done using NCTuns 6.0 for a single hop scenario to measure the accuracy of the formulas obtained for ideal cases of Crowds, and evaluate its performance in a real multi hop scenario focusing in the End Server attack. Finally, results and future works related to improve this simple and promissory anonymity mechanism over VANETs are provided.
