Book Binder Characterization and Evaluation by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Download or read book Binder Characterization and Evaluation by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy written by P. W. Jennings and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used in solution-state and solid-state experiments on 8 asphalt cements. Using a variety of chemical and solution-state NMR spectroscopic techniques, data were obtained about the amounts of aromatic carbon in an average molecule of asphalt sample, how the carbon is arranged in terms of size of the average aromatic system and the extent of substitution. By using solid-state NMR spectroscopic techniques, the structure of asphaltic cements was probed on a small-distance scale. Difference in molecular mobility were found among the asphalts studied. Changes in molecular mobility after laboratory oxidative aging were found to be small. The implications of these data with regard to the 'micellar model' of asphalt are discussed. The research results' potential impact on understanding asphalt cement properties is explored.

Book Roofing Research and Standards Development

Download or read book Roofing Research and Standards Development written by Walter J. Rossiter and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 2007 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This practice covers the performance requirements for the design, components, construction, and service expectations of new roof system assemblies that always include steel deck, preformed roof insulation, and bituminous built-up roofing, and their attachment. It may also include fire-resistive components, integral acoustical treatment, vapor retarder, adhesive or mechanical fastener attachment, and aggregates. This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. It is informational only and not an official part of the standard; the full text of the standard itself must be referred to for its use and application. ASTM does not give any warranty express or implied or make any representation that the contents of this abstract are accurate, complete or up to date."--Publisher's website.

Book Advances in Interlaboratory Testing and Evaluation of Bituminous Materials

Download or read book Advances in Interlaboratory Testing and Evaluation of Bituminous Materials written by Manfred N. Partl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This STAR on asphalt materials presents the achievements of RILEM TC 206 ATB, acquired over many years of interlaboratory tests and international knowledge exchange. It covers experimental aspects of bituminous binder fatigue testing; the background on compaction methods and imaging techniques for characterizing asphalt mixtures including validation of a new imaging software; it focuses on experimental questions and analysis tools regarding mechanical wheel tracking tests, comparing results from different labs and using finite element techniques. Furthermore, long-term rutting prediction and evaluation for an Austrian road are discussed, followed by an extensive analysis and test program on interlayer bond testing of three different test sections which were specifically constructed for this purpose. Finally, the key issue of manufacturing reclaimed hot mix asphalt in the laboratory is studied and recommendations for laboratory ageing of bituminous mixtures are given.

Book Multi Scale Modeling and Characterization of Infrastructure Materials

Download or read book Multi Scale Modeling and Characterization of Infrastructure Materials written by Niki Kringos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The micro- and nano-modification of infrastructure materials and the associated multi-scale characterization and simulation has the potential to open up whole new uses and classes of materials, with wide-ranging implications for society. The use of multi-scale characterization and simulation brings the ability to target changes at the very small scale that predictably effect the bulk behavior of the material and thus allowing for the optimization of material behavior and performance. The International RILEM Symposium on Multi-Scale Modeling and Characterization of Infrastructure Materials (Stockholm, June 10-12, 2013) brought together key researchers from around the world to present their findings and ongoing research in this field in a focused environment with extended discussion times. From asphalt to concrete, from chemistry to mechanics, from nano- to macro-scale: the collection of topics covered by the Symposium represents the width and depth of the currently ongoing efforts of developing more sustainable infrastructure materials. Researchers, practitioners, undergraduates and graduate students engaged in infrastructure materials or multi-scale characterization and modeling efforts can use this book as a comprehensive reference, to learn about the currently ongoing research efforts in this field or as an inspiration for new research ideas to enhance the long-term performance of infrastructure materials from a fundamental perspective. The Symposium was held under the auspices of the RILEM Technical Committee on Nanotechnology-Based Bituminous Materials 231-NBM and the Transport Research Board (TRB) Technical Committee on Characteristics of Asphalt Materials AFK20.
