Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosemary Righter examines the UN's future place in a world of tumultuous political and technological change, presenting an anatomy of the complex tangle of global organizations that has evolved since 1946, and of their struggle to adapt. She argues that the ideals and cooperative purposes the UN stands for retain their resonance, and that powerful governments are now readier, in principle, to turn to it. But they will continue to do so only where, and if, it matches the needs of a new and more active era of multilateral diplomacy. Righter examines every aspect of the UN: the hopes and contradictions built into its Charter, the unreality which has come to permeate what passes for debate there, the legacy of ideological confrontation, and the tides of reforming zeal that, almost since its inception, have washed over it and left almost no trace.

Thomas Garraway's first public sale of tea in England in 1657 was of historic importance. For this he published and distributed a poster... "The leaf of such known virtues ... that it is sold for twice its weight in silver. It maketh the body active and lusty. It helpth the headache, giddiness and heaviness and thereof. It is very good against stone and gravel, cleaning the kidneys and ureter. It is good against crudities, strengthening the weakness of the Ventricle or Stomack, causing good appetite and Deigestion and particularly for men of a corpulent body and such as are great eaters of flesh... It prevents and cures ague, surefeits...and fevers, by infusing a fit quantity of the leaf, thereby provoking a most gentle vomit...It drives away all pains in the Collick proceeding from wind and purgeth safety the Gall..." So said Thomas Garraway and indeed, many belived him!

Book Creating Nationality in Central Europe 1880 1950

Download or read book Creating Nationality in Central Europe 1880 1950 written by Tomasz Kamusella and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the immediate aftermath of the First World War, Upper Silesia was the site of the largest formal exercise in self-determination in European history, the 1921 Plebiscite. This asked the inhabitants of Europe’s second largest industrial region the deceptively straightforward question of whether they preferred to be Germans or Poles, but spectacularly failed to clarify their national identity, demonstrating instead the strength of transnational, regionalist and sub-national allegiances, and of allegiances other than nationality, such as religion. As such Upper Silesia, which was partitioned and re-partitioned between 1922 and 1945, and subjected to Czechization, Germanization, Polonization, forced emigration, expulsion and extermination, illustrates the limits of nation-building projects and nation-building narratives imposed from outside. This book explores a range of topics related to nationality issues in Upper Silesia, putting forward the results of extensive new research. It highlights the flaws at the heart of attempts to shape Europe as homogenously national polities and compares the fate of Upper Silesia with the many other European regions where similar problems occurred.
