Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth book in the LET'S GO FLY series of six picture books that follows the aviation adventures of a boy and his Grandpa. For children aged two and older, the series tells the adventures of Billy and Grandpa in an airplane, a helicopter, a glider, a hot air balloon, a seaplane, and a twin-engine airplane. Grandpa is the pilot, and he explains the art of flying to Billy, and he often gives his grandson copilot duties. They are joined by a colorful cartoon bird named Loop Skyhopper who acts as a guide, helps with explaining the details of each story, and adds to the fun from a bird's point of view. Each story is told in twenty-two colorful panels that will spark the curiosity and imagination of eager young pilots. Every adventure is available individually, or the entire series can be obtained in a single edition.LET'S GO FLY A BALLOON is the fourth book in the adventure series. Billy gets to go inside the balloon while he and Grandpa join the ground crew in filling the balloon and preparing it for launch.Drifting along with the wind, Billy chats with a boy on the ground, and he is thrilled when they drop down to a few inches above the surface of a lake. Later, he is excited when he spots a herd of deer scampering into the woods. There is more fun when they coast over a river bridge, and he is thrilled when they climb to a dizzying height above the clouds. They land in a field when they come down. The ground crew followed them in a truck and helps them pack up the balloon and put it on the truck. Billy and Grandpa ride with the balloon in the back of the truck, and as they pull away the two flyers recount their favorite part of the adventure.LET'S GO FLY AN AIRPLANE is the first book in the series. It follows Billy and Grandpa as they inspect the airplane together. Billy discovers wonderful things like wings, a propeller, a rudder, and all kinds of gages and radios. After the thrill of lift off, Billy discovers the fun of seeing his town from the air. Later they see fishermen on the river, and then fly in circles over Billy's house where his Mom waves to them from below. LET'S GO FLY A HELICOPTER is the second book in the adventure series. Upon lift off, Grandpa and Billy stand still in a hover, and then Grandpa shows him how to fly forward, backward, sideways, and spin in circles. Later, they fly low over the trees and town, and then Grandpa takes them to Billy's home where his Mom waves to them as they hover outside.LET'S GO FLY A GLIDER is the third book in the series. Billy discovers that gliders have very long wings to help them stay in the air longer. After they reach the proper altitude, Grandpa and Billy release from the tow plane, and soon encounter strong lift that carries them so high they soar with a falcon and another sailplane. And they go even higher where they find cool air and see the dark blue color of the sky at high altitude.LET'S GO FLY A SEAPLANE is the fifth book in the series. Billy and Grandpa inspect a floatplane from the dock of a seaplane base. With the windows open they scoot across the water in an exciting launch. Once airborne, the explorers decide to land on a river, where they see men fishing from the pontoons of another seaplane. The river is a tight spot for their next takeoff, so Grandpa lifts off on one float for a quicker takeoff, and then he steers them under a bridge on the rousing climb out.LET'S GO FLY A TWIN is the sixth book in the series. Grandpa is planning to use a twin-engine airplane for a business trip and invites Billy to come, too. Billy learns the speedy twin has retractable landing gear, and computerized flight instruments. On their way to the next town, Billy combines sightseeing with his copilot duties. He admires the clouds as they fly high over them for better speed, and he sees a train crossing a trestle far below them. It looks like a toy train.

Book Dixie

  • Author : Curtis Wilkie
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2002-05-16

Download or read book Dixie written by Curtis Wilkie and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002-05-16 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dixie is a political and social history of the South during the second half of the twentieth century told from Curtis Wilkie's perspective as a white man intimately transformed by enormous racial and political upheavals. Wilkie's personal take on some of the landmark events of modern American history is as engaging as it is insightful. He attended Ole Miss during the rioting in the fall of 1962, when James Meredith became the first African American to enroll in the school. After graduation, Wilkie worked in Clarksdale, Mississippi, where he met Aaron Henry, a local druggist and later the prominent head of the Mississippi NAACP. He covered the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964 and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party challenge at the national convention in Atlantic City, and he was a member of the biracial insurgent Democratic delegation from Mississippi seated in place of Governor John Bell Williams's delegation at the 1968 convention in Chicago. Wilkie followed Jimmy Carter's campaign for the presidency, becoming friends with Billy Carter; he covered Bill Clinton's election in 1992 and was witness to the South's startling shift from the Democratic Party to the GOP; and finally, he was there when Byron De La Beckwith was convicted for the murder of civil rights leader Medgar Evers thirty-one years after the fact. Wilkie had left the South in 1969 in the wake of the violence surrounding the civil rights movement, vowing never to live there again. But after traveling the world as a reporter, he did return in 1993, drawn by a deep-rooted affinity to the region of his youth. It was as though he rejoined his tribe, a peculiar civilization bonded by accent and mannerisms and burdened by racial anxiety. As Wilkie writes, Southerners have staunchly resisted assimilation since the Civil War, taking an almost perverse pride in their role as "spiritual citizens of a nation that existed for only four years in another century." Wilkie endeavors to make sense of the enormous changes that have typified the South for more than four decades. Full of beauty, humor, and pathos, Dixie is a story of redemption -- for both a region and a writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Triumphant . . . as heartwarming as it is beautifully written." —Michael Schaub, NPR From the acclaimed author of Girlchild, this gritty, irreverent novel sees a young misfit grow into hope Unsinkable and wrecked by grief, motherless and aimless and looking for connection, Helen Dedleder is a girl with a gift she doesn't want to use and a pack of friends who are all just helping each other get by. So cut off from the rest of the world that even the internet is blocked (never mind traffic in and out), Rosary, California, is run by evangelicals but was named by Catholics. It’s a town on very formal relations with its neighbors, one that boasts an oil refinery as well as a fairly sizable population of teenagers. For Helen and her gang of misfits, the tire yard, sex, and beer help pass the days until they turn eighteen and leave town. Her best friends, Win and Rainbolene, late arrivals to Rosary, are particularly keen to depart—Rain because she’ll finally be able to get the hormones she needs to fully become herself. Watching over them is Aunt Bev, an outcast like the kids, who runs the barely tolerated Psychic Encounter Shoppe and tries to keep Helen connected to her own psychic talents—a gift passed down from her mother. Tensions are building, though, in every way. Threats against the Psychic Encounter Shoppe become serious actions. One of the kids gets in trouble, and then another. And Helen can see some things before they happen, but somehow can't see the most important things happening right in front of her. Tupelo Hassman's gods with a little g bursts and splinters with flawed, lovable characters whose haphazard investigations into each others's hearts will reshape your understanding of trust, how to build a family, and how to make a future you can see.
