  • Author : Josh King
  • Publisher : St. Martin's Press

Download or read book Off Script written by Josh King and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Trump won election as the 45th President of the United States by studying American political stagecraft and learning what helped previous candidates succeed and doomed others to failure. A figure on the periphery of campaigns for decades, he glided down the Trump Tower escalator on June 16, 2015, declared his candidacy and took his place, permanently, as an actor in the country’s greatest spectacle. Twenty-eight years earlier, at the dawn of what Josh King calls “The Age of Optics” in OFF SCRIPT: An Advance Man’s Guide to White House Stagecraft, Campaign Spectacle and Political Suicide, Trump began to position himself for his eventual run for the Oval Office. Pictured at the foot of that same gilded escalator, he posed at the foot of that same escalator for a cover story profile in TIME magazine. “This Man May Turn You Green With Envy—Or Just Turn You Off,” read the first part of TIME’s headline in January 1989. “Flaunting It is the Game, and TRUMP is the name,” the headline concluded. The cover story came just after Massachusetts Governor Mike Dukakis lost in a landslide to Vice President George H.W. Bush, in part because Dukakis made the disastrous decision to ride in an M1A1 Abrams tank in Sterling Heights, Michigan less than two months before the election. Why did Dukakis make that ride, and why was it so deadly? Indeed, in each election that followed, why did George Bush, Bob Dole, Al Gore, John Kerry, John McCain and Mitt Romney make similar mistakes that cost them dearly at the polls? These are the questions that Josh King answers in OFF SCRIPT. King, who served as Director of Production in Bill Clinton’s White House and later was host of SiriusXM Satellite Radio’s long-running “Polioptics: The Theater of Politics,” brings readers on a wild ride over the last thirty years of the Age of Optics, from Ronald Reagan’s mastery of image to Barack Obama’s “Vanilla Presidency” to, ultimately, the faceoff between Hillary Clinton and Trump. As one of the White House’s most creative “advance men,” skilled at employing the tools to tell help tell the president’s daily story, and creating the scenes that the media can’t resist turning into news packages and front page photos, King pulls back the curtain on the behind-the-scenes alchemy of political stagecraft. King’s personal account, in-depth interviews, and detail-rich stories, and his unique angle on what drives headlines, makes news, and wins elections will serve as an indispensible companion to those keeping a close eye on the Trump presidency.

Download or read book Vox Populi written by William O'Shaughnessy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vox Populi is the long-awaited fourth collection of interviews, editorials, essays, observations and keen insight from legendary New York broadcaster William O’Shaughnessy. With this inspiring new anthology, Bill is back in a big way, offering compelling dialogue and opinion on timely issues and current events in politics, media, the arts and popular culture. A masterful interviewer, O’Shaughnessy goes one-on- one with Barbara Taylor Bradford, Steve Forbes, Joe Califano and a colorful band of townie characters from Westchester – the Golden Apple. Broadcasting for five decades from what the Wall Street Journal hailed as “the quintessential community station in America,” his thoughtful and muscular commentaries have been widely praised in all the important journals in the land. A self-styled First Amendment “voluptuary,” O’Shaughnessy is a stellar defender of Free Speech, having devoted the good part of fifty years to fighting censorship and government intrusion from his influential perch in the heart of the Eastern Establishment. He’s the one they roll out when the likes of Howard Stern, Bob Grant and Imus get in a jam. Colorful national figures and beguiling “townies” abound in Vox Populi which is also laden with exquisitely beautiful eulogies and tributes to his departed friends Tim Russert, Wellington Mara, Robert Merrill and Ossie Davis. And, as in every Bill O’Shaughnessy book, there is stunning and powerful wisdom and brilliant observations from Governor Mario Cuomo whom he so admires. The great American historian David McCullough observed: “I always look forward to reading the history of our times Bill O’Shaughnessy has written.” O’Shaughnessy is an authentic American voice.

Book Polysituatedness

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Kinsella
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2017-01-31
  • ISBN : 1526113376
  • Pages : 636 pages

Download or read book Polysituatedness written by John Kinsella and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the complexities of defining 'place', of observing and 'seeing' place, and how we might write a poetics of place. From Kathy Acker to indigenous Australian poet Jack Davis, the book touches on other writers and theorists, but in essence is a hands-on 'praxis' book of poetic practice. The work extends John Kinsella's theory of 'international regionalism' and posits new ways of reading the relationship between place and individual, between individual and the natural environment, and how place occupies the person as much as the person occupies place. It provides alternative readings of writers through place and space, especially Australian writers, but also non-Australian. Further, close consideration is given to being of 'famine-migrant' Irish heritage and the complexities of 'returning'. A close-up examination of 'belonging' and exclusion is made on a day-to-day basis. The book offers an approach to creating poems and literary texts constituted by experiencing multiple places, developing a model of polyvalent belonging known as 'polysituatedness'. It works as a companion volume to Kinsella's earlier Manchester University Press critical work, Disclosed Poetics: Beyond Landscape to Lyricism.
